Tasty Po'Boys and Hearty Gumbo 1/7/2010

I'm not from Louisiana, but I trust this is what a po' boy should be. Simple and delicious. I had the catfish (wanted the soft shell crab, but out of season right now) and it was perfect-- three healthy strips of crispy fried (and not too greasy) catfish fillet with dressing (lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo) on a soft french roll. I threw on some Crystal and it was perfect. Nothing over the top or experimental, just a damn good sandwich. It was lunch so i got the special, half sandwich and cup of gumbo. Again, I don't know if I've ever had authentic gumbo, but this was the best I've had so far. In the small (but filling) cup I counted 4 shrimp, 2 crawfish, a couple sausage slices, a few lumps of crab meat, chunks of chicken all in a creamy, rich and smoky stew. Again, I needed some more hot sauce, but I'll be damned if i can find a better gumbo in san francisco. I walked out spending about $14 with a small tip completely satisfied. Not an everyday spot, especially it being way out on san bruno and dwight in the bayview, but i will definitely be back--with friends. Pros: best po' boy and gumbo Cons: location, whatever more
