Date night? Great night! 1/8/2006

Being from much larger cities, I'm painfully spoiled when it comes to the Restaurant Holy Trinity of Food, Atmosphere, and Service. I'd lived in Cheyenne for almost five years before finally finding a reason to go to Poor Richard's, and I'm still kicking myself for not going sooner. Food: It is wonderful! Since Cheyenne is a strange mix of older life-long natives and a youthful group brought in by the air force base, the menu offers a wide variety of options for many different tastes. Prime rib and other higher-end beef cuts are joined by a nice selection of pasta dishes, and vegetarians are just as likely to find something to their liking as seafood lovers. If you have the time, taking a look at their dessert menu will send you into seventh heaven! Wine selection: It's a little harder to get good wine in Wyoming, but they're trying. I have only ever ordered wine once, and it was a tart and disappointing Riesling. I'm told that their non-Australian list is better. Atmosphere: A combination of stained glass and dark details against lighter walls makes even the open tables pleasant, although there aren't very many of those. Booths and intimate four-tops are the mainstay. The music is pleasant and unobtrusive, not too loud, and sometimes just current enough to spark a branch of your conversation. Service: Since this is an upper-scale restaurant, you're not going to get the three-minute interruptions, which can be both good and bad. In my experience, service has been relatively good on the whole, although sometimes a little slower than I'd like. Only once has there been an issue where a requested extra item didn't arrive until we were practically done with our meal. This is the only point that I see needs improvement, and then, only to establish a more consistent level of excellence. Price: Astoundingly enough, for a gourmet-level three-course meal, you can expect to spend only about $15 per person, on the average, including a shared dessert. You can spend more, or less, but a couple on a nice date can expect to spend about $40 to $45, with wine, dessert, and tip. If I had the option, I'd certainly give them four and a half stars honestly. Being one of the best restaurants in Cheyenne would earn it five on a comparative scale. more
