While this restaurant was a relatively entertaining place to spend a few hours with good company, the food is Mexican in name only. Sadly, Plaza Azteca serves up Americanized Mexican food recipes that suffer from the all too common pattern of reducing traditional sauces, spices, and favors to bland selections edible by masses unfamiliar with Mexico or the southwest. Don?t expect to find authentic Mexican tastes like a mole sauce or richly spiced salsa here. To improve the experience for the visiting Californian or desperate traveler, it may be wise to stick to a simple quesadilla or taco and keep expectations low.
Pros: Easy to reach Jefferson Ave location in central Newport News
Cons: Food is bland and devoid of Mexican flavor or spice
