Pho 79

My wife and i were so looking forward to ""the experience"" and made the trek from Marietta to Doraville last Sunday. The place was buttoned up tight - no reason given for not being open. I consider that customer-no-service. We wound up @ Red Salt in downtown Roswell and had a wonderful meal. Mark you out-did yourself. Zagot Ratings and Atlanta Best Ratings...there to greet you when you walk in, and indeed it was excellent. Start with the spring rolls and beef salad, then go from there. Very helpful staff helped us branch out. We ordered extra thinking we would eat the leftovers during the SuperBowl the next day. Only problem ...there werent' any leftovers! We were excited when Pho 79 opened close to our house---no need to drive to Buford Highway anymore for good pho. And it is consistently good (really, is there anything better than a hot, steaming bowl of pho on a cold or rainy day?) But in the months since, I've frankly worried about their chances for survival. I don't know why they moved the restaurant from Buford Highway to this rather unlikely piece of Demilitarized Zone between Doraville and Dunwoody; I assume Atlanta's rent prices must have played a part. Each time we go, we're among the only customers in the place---which is unfortunate and unfair, as the food is largely excellent and a good value. Aside from pho, their vermicelli (bun) and rice (com) dishes have yet to disappoint. Appetizers, like the fried egg rolls (cha gio) are also excellent. A number of other soups, such as beef stew (Bo Kho) are available if you're sick/afraid of pho or just want to branch out. (A minor complaint: on one visit the lemongrass soup, while tasty, was far too salty; it took my face several hours to unshrivel.) So give this place a try, if you're able. It would be a true shame if they folded, when inferior competitors (like Saigon Cafe) remain in business. Pros: Great food, inexpensive, varied menu more

A group of friends and I tried to find Pho 79, and much to our surprise, the restaurant has moved from its Buford Hwy location. It is now located at ""Dunwoody Point, 5000 Winters Chapel Road, Doraville, GA 30360."" I never ate at the old location, but the new location had a great patio and interior. Everyone in our group enjoyed our meals, and the service was superb. I thought the pho was well prepared and better than any other other pho in town. Finally, though they had not obtained their new liquor license, I hear that they will have some great drinks, such as the ""Vincent,"" which is only currently available in Midtown. The suburbs of Atlanta are truly lucky to have Pho 79, and it is well worth the drive for in-town residents, such as myself. Pros: Thumbs up! more

I almost don't want to tell you about this place because I still want to be able to get a table, but my husband and I have been going here for years (we even celebrated Valentine's Day 2006 here), and it is the best Vietnamese that I've had in the metro Atlanta area, and I've tried a variety of places. From pho to noodles to rice dishes, we've never had anything here that wasn't delicious, although my very favorite is the Bun Bi Cha Gio, a noodle salad topped with slices of fried spring rolls and bits of pork (to change it up, try asking for it with the barbecued pork). I swear that I actually feel better after eating it: topped with drizzles of hoisin and Sriracha hot sauce, it's delicious comfort food. The portions are enormous: I've never left the place without a to-go box, no matter how big my appetite. We like the basil rolls so much that we can never split an order: we always have to have our own. The staff is friendly and prompt, especially the owner. The variety shows that play on the big screen television are campy fun; the decor isn't fancy, but that's not something I really care about. The noodle bowls here are tremendous. Period. If you want something substantial to eat that NEVER fails on flavor, try the K10 on their menu. Forgive me, because I cannot remember the name of this amazing dish, but I order it every time and I'm never disappointed. This place was very good. I have had several PHO dishes in Atlanta and I have to give Pho 79 a big thumbs up. There were several things on the menu that I wanted to try but the (Chicken & Shirmp with chili spice and large noodles) soup dish was awesome. A ton of food for the price! OK, so it is not Tai. It does not pretend to be. It is what it is - the best example of Vietnamese food that can be found in the city. Dishes from all three regions of Vietnam adorn an ample menu of Rice and Noodle based dishes and Soups. Traditional PHO, said by many to be the Vietnamese national dish, is a mainstay. But don't overlook the creative pork, chicken, beef or shrimp dishes served with a nice selection of noodle types and preparation or with rice. Finishing off one of these delightful choices with an Iced French Coffee will leave you satisfied and with a little money left in your pocket as the food is astonishingly inexpensive. Thought I would add my two cents... This, in my very humble opinion, is the finest noodle house/pho (fuh) place in Atlanta, GA. I have never been to Vietnam, but I cannot imagine a tastier beef soup than the one served at this joint. The broth tastes buttery on the tongue and is filled with incredible flavor. I also enjoy the chargrilled chicken over rice noodle -- the table-top condiment selection seals the deal. Plus, the prices are ridiculously cheap. Why anyone goes to Doc Chey's and Noodle is uttlerly beyond me (same goes for Ru-San)...plus, they have killer Vietnamese variety shows on the big screen while you dine! I've read the other reviews, and honestly I don't mean to be rude but, all of the pho places in Atlanta have been the worst I've had since San Antonio, TX. Seriously, if you've never had the real thing, then I'm really sorry, but these places here is a false image of good Vietnamese cuisine. The soup is not clear, the meat not tasty, and the smell shouldn't be pungent. more

As a Buford Highway newbie, I can't compare this place to others on the strip, but I can attest to its tasty and cheap Vietnamese fare. Quick, friendly service, fresh, well-seasoned food, and great sauces on the table--it puts intown places to shame. It's a great place to start if you've never eaten on Buford Highway. more
