After reading reviews of how much people hate Petland I'm a bit nervous about posting my experience. The point of this review is not to review puppy mill/spca, etc...I'm strictly reviewing a buying experience at Petland so others can be more educated than I was going into this. I'd been taking my 10 year old daughter to Petsmart, SPCA, etc to find a puppy. On our way to the mall we went into Petland and held the sweetest snuggly puppy ever. She cried when we left. I cried when I heard the price! Considering our other pets are from SPCA and the pound, the price was a huge shock. I Read reviews, studied the breed, struggled with everything from the puppy mill to the money, negotiated some on the price. Came home with the puppy 2 weeks later. 1) Included in price is 60 days of vet bills and some meds by Petland specified Vet in Frisco. If you don't use their vet, you void your 60 day warranty. 2) The costs of some meds and office visits ($55) are covered for 60 days, vaccinations are NOT covered. Be sure you read the warranty you sign. I thought vaccinations were included when talking with the staff. 3) There is a 3 year genetic warranty. 4) Includes lifetime microchip membership. Petland also did all of the registration for us. We just uploaded a picture. (About a $200 value) 5) Petland also did most of the AKC registration for us. 6) Puppy has been pretty easy to potty train 7) Took her home on Sunday, by Tuesday she had mild kennel cough and couldn't receive vaccinations. 8) Usually the females cost more than the males. This puppy has quickly become part of our family. We are glad we are able to give her home. Very happy with the puppy. more

These guys sell sick dogs!!! 7/1/2011

We learned the hard way not to do ANY business with these people under any circumstances. We got word they had Bernese Mountain puppies for sale, a brother and a sister. They were both getting close to 4 months in age, so they were almost too old to sell as puppies. And because of their age, and the fact that they had been raised in a cage, they were going to be very hard to housebreak. But we have had Berners before and we love the breed, so I went in with the idea that this was more a rescue than a purchase. When we first saw the puppies, it was clear they were sick. Both had kennel cough, a highly contagious disease. Having them locked up in a little cage was just sickening to me. They initially wanted something well over $1000 each for them. I offered to take them both for $800 just to get them out of there and to try and find them a good home. It was not the puppies fault where they wound up. The owner was out so I was told by the store manager she would have to call him and that I should call back later. By the time I called again, the female was gone but the male was still there. So I went back determined to get him out of that place. When I bought him, for $500, I was told that because of his age, and because they had lowered the price so much, I was getting the dog without a warranty. Mind you, I was not given a choice in the matter. I either took him without a warranty or let him remain caged up for God knows how long. So we took him, knowing he had kennel cough but that he'd been treated by their vet and would be fine. What we didn't know, is that he also had giardia, a condition that causes acute diarrhea. And I mean acute! We took him to see our vet the very next day and got him started on treatments. But nothing was helping. We went back again and again trying to get something stronger to help the little guy get his bowels under control. Then recently, as a matter of last resort, our vet drew blood and sent it to Texas A&M for a full screening. The results came showing he was low in B-12, an inherited condition that makes disgestion difficult and leads to an inability to properly digest food. In all, we have spend nearly $2000 IN VET BILL ALONE. So I called Petland, they said the store is franchise owned and that I needed to deal with them directly. I called them and the store owner said he would talk to his lawyer and call me back. He never did. So I called again. He said Petland was taking care of it. I called Petland HQ. They said he was wrong and that I would need to deal with him. Sound like a run-around? It did to me, too. So I called him AGAIN and he said he would have his lawyer call me. All because I tried to help out a little puppy who needed a break. Please, do not even go into this place. Because if you do, you might see a puppy or kitten that will attach itself to your heart and you may well wind up with what we have. A sick puppy who is still being treated, and an ever mounting vet bill. more

YOU THINK ABOUT WALKING INTO PETLAND? DO NOT ASK FOR YVETTE....i went in their a few days ago, and as soon as I walked in i got this very hostile and rude look....I wanted to play with a puppy, and I got carded than I was treated very poorly...Maybe I didn't appear like I could afford the dog? But I was seriously considering purchasing a dog that day.....Sadly to say Petland lost my purchase....I was in the very last room where you play with the dogs before you purchase them next to the cash register....and I saw her treat her manager very poorly, and didn't show the owner any respect at all and raised her voice when he asked what she was doing....What kind of place is this manager running?.....All other employees are fine, and were great help....I suggests letting go of this lady and getting in 1. someone who picks her customers on what they look like 2. shows respect to the person writing her checks more

Employee fed live mouse to snake in front of children 10/3/2010

I was at this store earlier this afternoon and was showing my 16 month old the store. We reached the reptile and fish area and on the counter where the Betas, sink, and most fish supplies are located was a plastic container with a baby Ball Python inside. I am skilled in the reptile world and automatically knew the snake was in its feeding container. I knew this snake was about to go eat or just got done eating. After looking in the disgusting fish department which had cloudy water in every tank, along with dead fish and plenty of species that did not belong together, an employee came up to the sink with a live mouse a dropped it in the snake's container and walked away. The habitat created for all the crickets (egg crates) was out all over the floor and dead crickets were everywhere. You could smell the dead crickets. When I saw the snake with the mouse I told everyone in the nearby area to leave NOW. I did not want any children to see the 45 minute ""circle of life"" episode that was about to start. more

Petland is Biggest Customer to Puppy Mills 10/10/2008

Petland is the single largest customer of puppy mills in the entire United States. They state they only buy from ""USDA Approved"" kennels. USDA Approved kennels ARE puppy mills! And kitten mills, too. Petland is notorious for lying to the gullible and unsuspecting public, giving false breeder numbers (To the Hunte Corporation in many cases), rarely an address because most people are not going to drive several states away to see the breeder - I mean, puppy mill for themselves. They tout the ""Hunte Corporation"" as their supplier of puppies - which they are - they are puppy mill brokers. The puppies are ""laundered"" through them. They buy the puppies from the mills and sell them to Petland. No local, ""responsible"" breeder (as if there were any) would be able to stock the Petland stores with endless supplies of puppies of all breeds unless there were hundreds of pairs of different breeds i.e. puppy mills. Nor would any breeder who claims to ""love"" their dogs sell to a corporate giant that treats animals as nothing more than inventory. Don't let them fool you; do the research. They are all very trained in their deception, and it sounds above board if you don't check it out. Remember, every time you buy, a shelter dog dies. If you want a specific breed, go to Petfinder. com - they specialize in all breeds, ages, sexes and sizes. And they don't cost thousands of dollars. BOYCOTT PETLAND! Cons: service, attitude, selling animals while supporting puppy mills more

This one is no better than the others 2/7/2007

How tragic for the pets in our community that there are still people in the pet 'business' that sell kittens/cats, puppies/dogs, rabbits & ferrets. How many years ago has it been that PETsMART and PETCO showed the world that they could be very successful and have a lucrative business and NOT sell cats & dogs? Both PETsMART and PETCO support your community (therefore helping to save your tax dollars) by working with humane & rescue groups. DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you decide to buy a pet from them. Where do they get their ""livestock""??? Why would any reputable breeder sell to a pet store when they can make 2-3 times as much money per animal selling directly to the owner? How old were the infants when taken from the mothers? How much human contact did they have, starting at what age (how socialized are they)? If they don't sell pets please give them my gratitude and wish them well! I am a humane volunteer and have been for 20 years. I hear horror stories every day from people who have purchased pets from pet stores. Many of them felt sorry for the babies in the store and purchased for that reason. Others simply didn't know the pitfalls of pet store pets until it was too late. In the end it didn't matter why they purchased, the vast majority wished they had been educated and had adopted humane instead. Search online about puppy mills before setting foot in this store or any pet store that sells pets. You'll find an endless list of humane and rescue groups online at petfinders and you'll probably find at least one group working adoptions out of your local PETsMART and PETCO every weekend. They are volunteers, they don?t make money fostering & adopting animals. Please don't buy when so many die in our shelters. Thanks for listening. What I have stated here is not as much my opinion as it is my experience over the last 20 years. I've talked to a ton of people with broken hearts & sick or dying pets. If you truly care about pets & animals this is really important. more
