Bad experience 7/15/2010

Live in Oceanside and passed the place many times in the fifty years I have lived here. I love gyros and greek salads decided to give it a try. I usually go to taste of greece in Oceanside or Greek town in Rockville centre both of which I love. When I went to this place there was one young girl at the counter who was wearing a very skimpy top that expossed way to much. ( the owner shouldnt have this going on also she was taking the order of the man in front of me and got a cell phone call and answered it in the middle of his order talking loudly to a friend about there plans to meet guys that night). I ordered a gyro and greek salad to go.. When i got home the greek salad had not olives on it and very very little cheese. I called the place and asked about the olives and was told this is the way there greek salad is.It was more expensive then i am used to and was horrible . like a tossed salad not a greek one. The gyro was fair the meat was not well done enough and was a little bland. The place is very informal not really a restaurant has a few chairs if you want to sit down. The deserts looked amazing. The owner of this place needs to tell the young girls that work there to act more profesionally this girl should have been fired.Prices are high here I highly recomend to go to a Taste of Greece up the road .It is cheaper and a real family greek place with a salad loaded with cheese and olives Pros: nice deserts Cons: salad really lousy more

Great Food, Nice People 7/16/2009

I've eaten at Pete's for several years and it has become one of my favorite places to grab lunch or dinner. While it will never be confused with a swanky, upscale restaurant it's certainly offers great food in a clean, relaxed and unpretentious setting. The people there have always been nice, and if you're a classic rock fan you'll appreciate heading to Pete's and occasionally hearing a deep cut from a Led Zeppelin album or something of the like in the background. Don't get me wrong - exquisite dining is great and all, but tasty food (especially the gyro platter or falafel), friendly people and relaxed atmosphere is what makes me a frequent customer. Pros: affordable good food, relaxed atmosphere, nice staff Cons: other than being slightly cramped at peak times, none more

Good food and service 12/5/2008

My parents are regulars here so I joined them for dinner and my impressions were somewhere in between the two camps below. The layout of the place is a bit cramped but it was nicer than Abe's in Long Beach who offer nearly the same menu choices. The service was friendly and professional, reasonably quick, and the food was good, a gyro platter was a nice large portion of the usual beef/lamb gyro meat covered in a mound of lettuce, tomato, feta, and tzatziki sauce with pita on the side. Chicken gyros were good also, the meat was a bit dry and I was told it is usually more flavorful than it was on this night. A good hummus/tahini was on the chicken plate also which tasted more like tahini than usually found. I'll give them a solid 4 stars and say they are worth a second visit next time I'm in the area. Pros: Friendly service, large portions Cons: A bit cramped, gets crowded easily more

I KNOW FOOD !! 11/27/2008

I really had a great dinner. The food was very good. The service was perfect. Very casual and comfortable. Can't wait to eat there again. Found myself in the area, just stopped in. I think I made a discovery. Next time I will go there on purpose. more

Best chicken souflaki platter ever ! & I would know !! 11/27/2008

I really like Greek food. This was wonderful !! I visited Pete's Pitaria recently for the first time. I enjoyed dinner very much. Leo took such good care of us. ( we found out he was the owner later). The waitresses were so nice and pleasant. We had so much food, great prices, so super clean, and did not feel bloated. Most restaurants use chemicals of some sort that leave you feeling bloated. This was like eating at a friends house. Home cooking. Just delicious. So glad we went before reading the reviews some negative people wrote. I was very surprised that someone ate there and did not absolutely love it !! The white sauce was so lite, not so so garlicy, just perfect. Thanks Pete's Pitaria for a great dinner ! more

Pete's Pit? 1/16/2008

I had to laugh when I read the one comment below that Leo's BBQ Gyro turned him on to ""Greek food."" Since when does BBQ constitue Greek dining or ""fine"" Greek food. Decent greek desserts is all I would say. The food is diner standard; nothing extraordinary (salads, gyros, kebabs). The moussaka left much to be desired. And it is not like the traditional Greek diners and restaurants we go to in Astoria that have food which is family prepared. Most plates seem prepared by his side help. And you can get fried calamari at any other Italian restuarant in Island Park and Long Beach...far better. The place was redone, but still cramped and you can tell they prefer you take it out. Pros: Galaktoboureko Cons: Moussaka, Souvlaki, Calamari, BBQ!!! more

Avoid 12/4/2007

I agree with the first few reviewers. Seems the last two guys haven't ventured out much. The take out left much to be desired. I got better take-out Greek food in Long Beach & RVC....which doesn't say much. It isn't much of an ""eat in"" place anyway....small tables and it is very cramped inside. Regardless, the whole take-out experience annoyed me...I normally wouldn't take the time to write someting. My kids meal was disgusting. The only positive was it is cheap. But I too rather pay more and get decent Greek food. more

Best greek food in nassau county, no questions 9/22/2007

I have to agree with jbcandoo, the reviews prior are way off base with regards to service. Everyone has there own taste in food, granted, but the service is one of my favorite reasons to go there. Leo is an extremely personable host and everyone who works there follows suit. He remembers everybody and is extremely gracious. Pros: BBQ gyro dishes, Falaffel, Sides, Service Cons: Small establishment more

Best Greek Food around, Great People 9/22/2007

I have NO idea what these other reviewers are talking about. The guys who own's the place (Leo) is probably the nicest, coolest restaurant owner I have ever met. Remembers everyones names and orders, always strikes up conversations. Just great people. Pros: Best Falafel around, great food and service Cons: Gets crowded sometimes. more

Bad Service, ""Decent"" food 8/13/2007

Ok for ""quick served"" Greek food...but not the best (I was born and raised in Korinthos). I would consider it a fast food restaurant for Greek dining. Cheap...but I would have paid more to have experienced something more memorable. Rude service...as I now see others have experienced (by the other commentary here). Pros: NA Cons: Service, No Delivery more

Avoid!!! Staff Attitude and low quality food 8/5/2007

Visited this small eatery with my family a few weekends ago for dinner. The place is extermely cramped, the food (especially the gyro meat) were substandard, and the attitude of the cashier was nothing short of nasty and immature (I later found out from a neighbor that this is the owner and the rude/snide commentary is custom behaviour). Do yourself a favor and spend a few more dollars at some of the other great restuarants in our small town. Island Park/Barnum Island has quite a few amazing places without the attitude and lousy food. It takes a lot for me to get upset and write a poor review for any small place...but this one set me over the edge and I wouldn't want anyone else to waste thier money. Pros: Nothing Cons: Nasty attitude, low quality food (most seemed prepackaged) more

Greasy food, bad service! 8/1/2007

Greasy food, bad service with an attitude! We had the Gyro Platter and Homemade Mousaka and found them quite disappointing. Our local friends have agreed....better greek dining at restaurants/shops in nearby Long Beach. Even with cheap prices, it wasn't worth a dime! more
