Last Saturday, my friends and I visited the Oviedo Petsmart in order for them to adopt a dog. When we got there, we immediately noticed that the puppies were all in circular cages where they could be handled by anyone, and while they had water affixed to their cages, they clearly had no food. Worse than that, the adult dogs were all being kept in separate crates with no food OR water. Come on, this is Florida -- at least give the poor things some water! For an adult dog, the adoption fee was $40, which was supposed to include all of their shots, a free vet visit, microchip, spay/neuter, etc. They also advertise these dogs as ""immediately receiving flea/tick prevention"" once they entered Judy's rescue. The puppies were upward of $200 each, which we found to be a little ridiculous. This was apparently the case with many potential adopters as several passed by the puppies because of the price. My friends decided on an adult dog and upon the ""free"" vet visit, it was discovered that she had NOT had her rabies vaccine (she was almost a year old! WHY WOULD THEY NOT VACCINATE HER?) and had two MASSIVE ticks behind her ear and on her leg! So I guess they don't check the dogs all that well when they come to the rescue. Not only that, but she had NOT been microchipped as advertised. After we paid a $200 vet bill (so much for a ""free"" visit), we bought her some essentials and I took her home to dogsit for a little while. As I bathed her, the water began to turn black -- so no one had even bathed this poor dog in God knows when! I had specifically asked if this dog had been fostered, to which the employee had said, ""Yes, she's been in a foster home."" The foster home didn't bathe her or check her for ticks?! By the way she reacted to the dog bed, it's clear she's been kept in an outside kennel, NOT a foster home! The dog is impossibly sweet and loving, I have no problems with her -- it's this ""rescue"" that's the problem. In order to adopt, you have to fill out a MASSIVE application and if you can't remember every scrap of info or if you've ever sold your dog for ANY reason, they make you feel like crap, but they sell dogs who are dirty, infested, and not properly cared for themselves. Hypocrites! Side note: while we were there, a puppy took a poo on another puppy's head, and several puppies ended up with feces on them. When an employee was asked for a paper towel to clean the dogs, she rolled her eyes and said, ""just take it inside (Petsmart) and wipe it off with something, or use your shirt."" Excuse me? You don't even have something to wipe off the dogs with? And you want me to USE MY SHIRT? Also, the cage we took the dog from was promptly filled with another dog after we left, one that hadn't been there before, so I suspect they were keeping some of the dogs in the transport truck they were using.
Pros: dogs easily visible
Cons: dogs dirty, infested, not given food/water while on display
