The Scene
Peebles Island is situated just north of the city of Cohoes at the junction of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. The trails that encircle the island offer spectacular views of the cliffs and overlook two rivers and an impressive series of waterfalls. Watch out for osprey swooping from above, prowling for fish in the rivers.
The Story
The island's historical claim to fame is its role as a last point of defense against the British armies of General John Burgoyne, who intended to capture Albany in 1777. The island was fortified with earthworks and entrenchments, but an American victory at Saratoga rendered these unnecessary. Peebles Island is now home to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
When to Go
In the early spring, the shadbush's white blossoms bedeck the island, making it a perfect spot for romantic picnics.
