Editorial review from Citysearch 3/7/2013

From the plastic booth seats to the bad lighting, this place is TERRIBLE. They served old kraft mac and cheese on the kids menu, the spaghetti sauce tasted like the bottom of a very burnt pan. The meatballs are squishy and not meaty, the garlic bread has SESAME SEEDS on it. I ordered Fettucine carbonara and it had CANNED PEAS in it, also no flavor at all. The salads were sitting in about 1/2"" of water. The waitress was nice and she did take my food of the tab but she didn't tell us that our food didn't even come with salads so that was extra fee. We ended up paying over $30 for a kids meal (that costs $1 box!!) an uneaten sandwich and two drinks. I'll never go back. GAG more

Disappointed 11/7/2009

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now and went tonight for the first time. I am disappointed in the food and the service. We only saw our waitress at the beginning and end of our meal and I spent a great deal of the time thirsty. The food was very ordinary. It was ok, but certainly not worthy of a $12 meal, more like $6. I was even disappointed in the water as it had a funky taste. The atmosphere is much more casual than I expected. Its almost like a diner/fast food atmosphere. I hope your experience is better than mine! Pros: still thinking... Cons: overpriced, over rated, funky water more

fun little hole-in-the-wall 6/18/2009

Perfect for family owned, hole-in-the-wall dining, which we happen to love. Went with my husband (who can be a little picky) and my 6 yr old and we all really liked what we ordered. Huge portions and great service. Pros: bread and the spinach artichoke dip more

OUTSTANDING DON""T BE FOOLED STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR 11/15/2008

This is the by far best kept secrets in the San Antonio. A family owned small business with oustanding customer service and FANTASTIC service, ambience, and food. ""Papa"" proudly servied our country (retired military) and served the guests with the same pride. Today his sons continue what papa started. The family is from New Jersey so they know good Italian food and have passed the family values and traditions down to the next generation! The cool thing is the sons successfully continue Papa's values and love for the business. \r \r OUTSTANDING I WOULD GIVE THEM ANOTHER START IF I COULD\r \r Pros: Everything about this place is great and family run out of the way Cons: Best kept secret, You would never guess this place was so cool from the outside. more

Great food, great atmosphere, great service, great family! 10/17/2008

This is one of the best kept secrets in the San Antonio area. The service is fantastic and if there is a problem all you have to do is say something and management will make sure things are made right. This is a family owned business and their customer service attitude comes through. The ambience is superb as well as the food. ""Papa"" started this business after serving our country proudly (retired military), was from New Jersey, knew all about good Italian food and passed the family tradition on to his sons who, thank goodness, are carrying on the great traditions started by their father! Pros: Great food, great service...what more can I say! Cons: Can only say I wish they were open 7 days a week. more

Don't believe the hype 1/31/2008

I am doing a tour of Italian restaurants in San Antonio and had high expectations for this place but was so disappointed. Let me first say living in Large Italian community in New Jersey I like to think I know a bit about Italian. They did film the soprano's in my neighborhood. This was a Texas version. The appetizers were pretty good tried the toasted ravioli and calamari. The pizza was horrible domino's would have been better don't let the smell fool you it smelled better than it tasted. We tried the ziti, and Alfredo. The tomato sauce almost had a BBQ taste and the Alfredo was tasteless but the noodles were good. If I had to pick it again I probably would not go. We had a group of 7 and only 1 like the food but hey make your own decision. Pros: in expensive more

Great Italian in relaxed Atmosphere 11/23/2007

This place is amazing! The food is the best Italian I've had in a long, long time. The prices are incredible, and the service is amazing -- not to mention a fun atmosphere. If you are in San Antonio, do not miss out on this place. It has been family owned and operated for quite some time. Lunch, dinner, you name it. If you want great Italian at great prices, this is the place to go! Pros: Great Food, Great Prices Cons: In the middle of nowhere more

As charming as a restaurant can get! 1/29/2006

This family-owned restaurant's greatest asset is the made-from-scratch tomato sauce. The food is outstanding for the price. The multitude (literally, multitude) of headshots and movie posters adorning the walls of the restaurant will keep customers vastly entertained til their food comes. I'm tempted to say that, with Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Bruce Willis, and many more familiar faces that you've seen but can't remember the names of, Papa Dante's is the most entertaining restaurant I know. A truly warm and enjoyable place. I recommend the Chicken Parmigiana with a side salad. The cheesecake is a must! Pros: Incredible atmosphere, Outstanding food, Inexpensive Cons: Gets busy on fridays more

BEST!! 9/14/2005

Authentic italian dishes made from scratch!! From the original spaghetti to ocean morsels such as seafood lasagna, everyone's taste buds are stimulated with every bite!! The garlic bread is some of the best I have every tasted! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with an earthly, toasty portion of sesame seeds on top-just enough butter on top! The ambience is breathtaking when you see pics of every known celebrity one can think of! In fact, this is where we went to dinner tonight! We had the meat filled ravioli with spaghetti with bolognese sauce! Every bite made me fill as though we were dining in Italy!! I highly recommend this cozy, out of the way place for you next true, authentic dining experience!!! more

It's all about Marilyn and the Mob 8/22/2002

It's and excellent whole in the wall. If you like old pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the Mob, this is your kind of place. Their pastas are inexpensive and their Marilyn Monroe Sandwich is HUGE and cheap! Their is nothing fancy about Papa Dante's except their small town family run business style. So put on your flip-flops and cut-offs and have a great dining experience! more
