I walked by an OGM sign on the way to work this morning and was reminded of what a terrible experience I had 3yrs ago with Mr. Meislin. The fact that I am still unsettled about my bizarre encounter with him prompted me to write a review and hopefully spare others the experience of working with Mr. Meislin. Owen is the worst landlord Ive had the displeasure of coming in contact with. I feel like I was in my apartment on sufferance. Every dealing with him was very unpleasant and always reeked of dishonesty. I ignored all of the bad reviews of him I found online because he seemed like a nice guy. Boy was I wrong. I called him today to talk about some problems with moving out and he hung up on me. Avoid Owen G Meislin at all costs. He was rude to me both as a fellow human and as a tenant. If I never saw Owen again, it would be too soon. more

Owen and his office staff have always been very responsive to any problem that may have arisen. I have rented from him for three years and could not be happier. I read the review from the person who lived in one of his rentals for FIVE years and was unhappy? Must have left the place dirty and therefore didn't get back the full refund. Why would you stay some place for 5 years if you were so miserable? Return the property in the condition you got it when you moved in and you will get a full refund - I did when I moved from one of his rentals to another. more

Iam a friend of a woman who has under gone the worst with Owen G. Meislin. I was considering to rent a house but decided against it. The question I have is why havent the tenants contacted the owner of the properties. Mr. Meislin is the property manager. Has the owner of these properties decided to take a deaf ear. Has he been informed of all these atrocities. The info I received was that the owner was someway affliated with the military. If this is true, how could he stand by and allow all these bad things to happen. This does not reflect positively on us who have the highest respect for those men and women who have served their country. Owner do you have no value in human life? Or is it the Value of the dollar. Owner of the properties do the right thing. You should be ashamed of yourself. If you are affliated with the military you should take care of these tenants that have true problems just like you took care of your fellow comrades. I hope you treated your comrades more

I have used Owen to buy and sell real estate multiple times. He always looked out for my best interest in a most professional and dedicated manner. I have also used Owen and his company for my rental unit. He goes out of his way to protect my investment, especially against those who choose not to bide by their rental agreement. Renters will only have problems if they violate the terms of their lease. I could not be more satisfied with his professionalism and will continue to use him for all my real estate needs. I lived in a rental house in Charleston in 1999 that was bought by him mid-lease. Three months later, I come home to SOME of my belongings on the side of the road but NONE of my belongings in the house. All of my property of value(two bikes, two surfboards, a snowboard, a computer, and a stereo) mysteriously disappeared. There was a witness that saw a truck in the driveway loading the above mentioned property into it. I never recieved an eviction notice and never did anything to warrant one. I recently asked Owen for permission to add a pet on my lease. He said no originally since I am sure that as a landlord he could tell many horror stories involving pets. I wrote a letter explaining that I know what I am doing and he changed his mind and approved my request. This experience demonstrates a willingness to work with tenants in good standing and shows that Owen sees his tenants as people not just rent checks. more

I have been a tenant of OGM for 1 year. I have been in touch with the office staff numerous times and have found them to be courteous, personable and professional. They respond to my needs in exactly the way it was outlined to me when I signed my lease. Initially that seemed somewhat intimidating to me but I''ve come to respect their level of professionalism. After ending the lease, forfeiting the deposit and doing the requested repairs Owen G. Meislin still wants money from me. He is charging outrageous prices for work that was already done to the property prior to moving out. The house was left in great shape with pictures to prove it. If there is anyone out there who previously rented from him and would like to have the opportunity to express their similar treatment please contact me. My court date is the morning of May 7th in Charleston. I'm not looking for help with my case because his accusations hold no water and I have a lawyer, but just a chance for those who might have gotten a bad hand dealt to them a chance to have their say. more

I'm going on 3 years renting from Owen and have never had a problem with either him or his staff. I don't understand why there are bad comments being posted about him at all. I recall when I had a minor plumbing problem, and the same day they had someone come by and fix it for me. He has never come to my apartment unannounced. 17 months after I've moved out from the apartment I use to live in, he still didn't pay back the security deposit. I was talking to him and his employees 20+ times, they always assured me everything is OK and the check is on the way. When I called later complaining about not receiving anything, they've invented another story that they've moved the whole office and my file is most likely somewhere in the attic. After another month, I was told by Mr. Meislin that the accountant's brother died and the check will be send right after he will be back from the funeral. As a realtor, Mr. Meislin is underhanded in his dealings. He sells substandard housing and refuses to allow buyers out of contracts once problems with properties are recognized. He claims to have the issues repaired, but ""this just ain't so"". He does everything is his power to not let a buyer out of a contract. So don't sign one with him. Just plain stay AWAY!!!!! I am not at all reserved in my disapproval of Owen G. Meislin and his business. I had a horrible experience in my dealings with him throughout and most especially after my lease was up. Maintenance was like pulling teeth. We, as tenants, would have to call the specific outside companies and organize appointments- both unprofessional and incredibly inconvenient! I don't feel the least bit bad trashing this guy and his company. Charleston is full of money-grubbing do-little landlords who don't care at all about their tenants. Yet this guy absolutely takes the cake, and is by far the worse I have encountered in five years in the city. I base this on anecdotal evidence from friends and personal experience. Firstly, he has incredbily unprofessional and rude employees. He has receptionists call tenants to inform them their apartments are being shown. I was awoken on a Sunday morning at 9 AM by a phone call informing me my apartment would be shown in two hours. This is despite the fact that South Carolina tenant's by law are required to receive 24 hours notice on all visits by landlords or prospective buyers. It's pretty funny how he has these phone girls do his dirty work, though. They seem genunitely surprised when told they can't just show up whenever they please, and that a paying tenant would be unreceptive to such intrusions. And despite me informing them of this ""law,"" I still receive calls telling me someone will be coming by that same day. ""Just to let you know..."" they say. All of my friends that have dealt with him report being nickel and dimed to death by of his fees and stickler attitude. If only he realized laws and leases apply to his company, too! I have had a terrible experience renting from Owen G Meislin, he is the worst landlord i have ever had. He was very nice and cooperative before i moved in, but once i signed that lease, it was like i did not matter anymore. There was a laundry list of things that needed to be fixed in the apartment when when i moved in, and he assured me they would be taken care of. Some of the main items on the list were faulty heating and air conditioning unit, an oven from the 70's that was in constant disrepair, and a hot water heater that only worked at half its capacity. The worst thing was that the stairs were literally falling apart, and it took me six months, and the involvement of the City of Charleston and a lawyer for him to fix them. The HVAC was not working properly for at least 3 months before it was fixed, and the hot water heater remains half working to this day. Every time i try to call and get things done, i hear the same excuses from his secretary (who is the most insincere person i have ever talked to), such as ""we are working on it,"" or ""we thought that was already fixed."" When asked to speak with Owen personally, she told me he was far too busy, and did not even offer to make me an appointment. When i finally did get to talk to Mr. Meislin and inquire about my hot water heater, he yelled at me and told me that hot water heaters don't work as well in the winter, and that it would get better when the weather warmed up (this was the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard, and was refuted by two maintenance companies that i talked to). I am currently looking for a new apartment, and will have no trouble getting out of the lease, because he has already violated it multiple times, according to the lawyer i talked to. I am a pretty down to earth person and understand that i am living in an old Charleston home, but something is wrong when things like major appliances and heating/air conditioning are not working.
