Kumamotos and Kobe !! 11/25/2009

From my first experience dining alone as a 29 year old female at the sushi bar, I was made to feel welcome and comfortable. The wait staff is more knowledgable than friendly but any true foodie would prefer that any time. The menu of sushi was at the time (five years ago) cutting edge, fresh, and insanly delicious. All the carpaccios were fantastic. Oyster fans will not be dissappointed with the always small in size but big on flavor Kumamotos. The best cold app are the oysters for raw bar fans and the red snapper carpaccio for sashimi fans. Best hot appetizer: Kobe beef Tataki. I never indulged in the frois gras that is additionally available. Pros: Food flavor, presentation and creativity Cons: Too small of a bar more

BECAUSE OF THE MANAGER RYAN I NEVER WANT TO COME BACK 8/7/2009

My boyfriend and I often go to Osaka and spend a ton of money there, and i really wish i could write a better review for it. It is our absolute favorite restraunt and I have brought alot of business to it. However, I had a bad experience there recently which has almost completely turned me off to the place. I have been going to Osaka for about 3 years and since then i go about once a week. My boyfriend and I fell completely in love with the Dynamite roll (which at the time was $12) but since then the price for this roll is $14. About a week ago i went to Osaka and ordered 4 dynamite rolls and was charged $16 each for them. We then asked to speak to the manager. We recognized the manager who came out as a waiter we had before named Ryan. We had left him a bad tip about a year ago because he was rude, he was unfriendly, he never checked on our table, and when we asked for the check it took him at least 30 minutes to bring it back. I think he recognized us and so he overcharged us for our roll unfairly. When we asked about the price he was EXTREMELY nasty about it. He gave us a VERY hard time. He called us liars and said that we always paid 16. He practically yelled at us and made us feel horrible. Ever since then we have been upset about the place. I spend alot of money there and im seriously considering not coming back because of him. Since then i have told all of my friends and family who go about my experience and Osaka is going to lose ALOT of business because of Ryan. We ended up staying for dinner that night because i was already starving, but i wish i hadnt. I have never felt so uncomfortable eating at a restraunt before. This WAS my favorite restraunt but i dont have the respect for it now that i used to. They lost one of their best costumers because of their extremely rude manager, Ryan. Pros: Amazing food Cons: Very rude manager more

Love it! 9/3/2008

My husband and I regularly dine at Osaka; once a month we treat ourselves. Most of the time we nestle right in at the bar, but occasionally we will request a quiet table. On these occasions, the wait staff has been courteous, attractive, and charming. Some of our favorite dishes include the sea scallop and vegetable appetizer, as well as the tuna tartar and any carpachio dish. It is a pleasure just to watch the presentation and pure variety of the many dishes as they are brought to the guests. more

Amazing Sushi, Incomparably nice servers 7/9/2008

My favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. The sushi rolls are always interesting and their diverse menu keeps even non-sushi lovers happy. The HONEYMOON ROLL is amazing, as are the little crabs that they flash fry sometimes (no idea what they are called). The service is always kind if sometimes a little on the slow side, but only when the place is slammed. Additionally, I tried Morimoto's sushi, and found it lacking in a big way compared with Osaka. more

I wish I could give it a good review... 7/11/2007

My fiance and I decided to try Osaka out for the first time a few weeks after we moved to Philly. Dining at the restaurant that evening couldn't have gone worse. Apparently they were short on staff, which is understandable, but as the restaurant isn't that cheap, we expected better service than having to wait 20 minutes to place our drink orders. The food we did get was wonderful, but we had to ask for our drinks to be refilled and we also had to wait for an unacceptable amount of time at the end of the meal to get the check. But, about a year later, we decided to give it another go because it's the only decent sushi place we have found near our neighborhood. That evening, dinner was fine, service was wonderful - prompt and accomodating. We didn't have a reservation, but only waited a short time for a place at the sushi counter. The problem came in the next day when I checked the balance on my debit card. Online, it was showing that Osaka had double charged me for dinner by authorizing my card twice, for different amounts. I promptly called the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager, but was told that she wouldn't be available until that afternoon. Over the course of the next two days, my fiance and I called a total of 7 times, each time being told that the manager was not available, but she'd be back ""in about an hour"" (even at 6 or 7 pm, when you would hope to find a manager on duty). We were also told that no one else in the restaurant could handle our problem. When she finally did call us back, two days after the incident, she said she would take one of the transactions off either that evening or the next day. It was 6 days total before we had access to that money in our account. The restaurant was not very apologetic nor did it seem very concerned at such a gross oversight. We may or may not return to Osaka, but if we do, we will not be using a debit or credit card to pay for dinner. Pros: Great food at a decent price Cons: Poor customer service, especially when they screw up... more

A truly great dining experience. 6/30/2007

The sushi was ""inspiring"" as my companion described it. It was our first visit to Osaka and her first time having sushi. It was a Friday night and we didn't have reservations so we had a little wait (the place was packed, understandably so) but it wasn't that bad for a weekend evening (25 minutes). The atmosphere was cozy and the service was friendly. The sushi was the freshest I've had and the variety was great too. Do yourself a favor and go to Osaka, you will not be disappointed. Pros: The Food! more

Sushi with a Twist 4/25/2004

This quaint Japanese restaurant rests quietly in lovely Chestnut Hill. My sensei and I have always drove past Osaka, wondering how the food is there. My sensei frequents Japan twice a year for many years, he's a sushi expert. We decided to try it out one day. We enter the restaurant and were immediately seated. The cheerful waiter was very attentive during our entire meal. The menu, though not extensive, but impressive. There were many Korean influences within the restaurant and in the menu. This restaurant is not pure Japanese. However, we ordered sushi and sashimi. They were REMARKABLY fresh! I haven't had sushi this fresh in years. However, there are some twists to traditional dishes/sushi (ie squid sushi with mint leaves). Overall, Osaka is a little pricey but the food and the service were absolutely wonderful. Pros: Sushi, Service, Ambience Cons: , Authenticity, Parking more

Nicest People I've ever met 1/5/2004

On Christmas Eve, they were about close a bit early for the holidays. Instead, they opened up the kitchen again for my siblings & I, who wandered in about a half hour before the official closing time. Rather than the curt, bitter attitude I was expecting from the staff, they were wonderful, courteous and friendly. The owner(?) stopped by our table periodically to check in on us. Our waiter even apologized for the limited service, and suggested coming back for a better experience. The food was terrific, and they were great sports. I definitely want to go back and would recommend this to anyone (that is, except late night on the holidays!). Pros: Friendly service, Food more

impressive... 6/1/2003

Best susi I've had in the city, although I've yet to try Morimoto's. Service is hip and friendly. It's a nice mix here, Argyle sweater-around-the-shoulders types mix at the sharp sushi bar while locals and friends chow down on damn fine sushi. more
