Best

Always open, the Original Hotcake and Stake House is a staple of P-Town's late night, early morning and whenever-you-want-bacon dining scene.

Worst

Funny how appealing this place becomes after the bars close. Long lines, greasy food and a sloppy drunk clientele are somehow okay. Portions are gigantic and the hotcakes and eggs...

A Greasy great value 3/17/2006

You know what you're going to get when you come to this place, good food cooked the old fashioned way, no radiccio salads here, just good bacon and eggs, pancakes, without any concern for one's health. But ya gotta go out and have some of that once in a while. this is the spot. Pros: Grand ma's cooking Cons: parking more

the best greasy spoon Portland has to offer 2/4/2006

There are systems and rules in place, and as long as you follow then you'll get along great. I've been a patron sice they used to yell the orders back and forth. No saving tables, by the time you order someone will have left anyways. Bease pancakes in Portland hands down. Giant yummy omlets, giant plates of hashbrowns. Terrible coffee. These area few of my favorite things... Pros: inexpensive, GREAT FOOD, fun attitude Cons: parking more

THE BEST 8/7/2005

I seem to always order the same thing...mushroom and cheese omelet with hash browns. The portion is so big. Food is yummy and greasy (in a good way) and definately hits the spot. If you go there, be ready to order, eat, and leave promptly. There aren't too many seats in this place. If you want a place to read your book or do your homework...go find yourself a Starbucks. Pros: food, inexpensive Cons: crowded, parking more

they remember me! 8/3/2004

Great food for not a huge amount of cash. After just a few visits, the staff remembered me, and what my ""usual"" was. I was greatly impressed. No long waits, no B.S. Just good food. Pros: inexpensive, tasty, convenient location more

Great food, lacking in everything else. 8/22/2003

I was a regular at the Hot Cake House for quite some time. The food is wonderful for the price range. The problem is with the staff. I've been there easily one hundred--never seen anything that resembled a security problem. Now they charge a cover after midnight to pay for their security. The guards they hired are quite unfriendly. The staff is also rather grumpy and not at all prompt. They boot people from the place seemingly at random. There are also large crowds--who come only for the food. Pros: Great food. Cons: Slow service, Uneeded security, Lack of Parking more

Good eats 5/18/2003

Cheap, but certainly good. Go for the potato pancakes, which come with sour cream and applesauce. Or try them with a side of sausage gravy for $1.25 more. The pancakes were good, but wish they would mix blueberries/strawberries in the batter, rather than pour compote on top. Pros: price, gravy, potato pancakes Cons: area more

if your hungray, this is it.. 3/2/2003

Alot of food for the price, great place to go after bars close, but expect a wait everyone knows about this place. And there's not alot of room.. all types of people come here, enjoy.............. Pros: good food, good price Cons: not much room, expect along wait pm more

They Call The Police On You 1/16/2003

A friend and I went to the O H&S House to study. We bought some food and began to read. After about an hour this squirrelly cook comes up to us and mumbles something about getting busy at 2am and that we had been doing homework for a while. To be courteous, we moved to a back table, thinking that we had until 2am, another hour. After 20 minutes the cook walks out of the building and comes back WITH A COP, who escorted us out of the building, which was barely a third full. Most humiliating experience I've ever had. I used to love this place, but I don't think I'll ever go back. more

Ice Cube's Favorite 12/24/2002

The only spot in Portland that Ice Cube, ""must go to"" when he comes to Portland. The OHSH is a great place to go for breakfast and late night food. I'd reccomend it to anyone. Pros: Great Food, Jukebox With Rap, Jukebox w/ Everything Cons: Bad Service Sometimes more

Doesn't anyone work during the week? 10/8/2002

Loved this place since 1987, when buddies and I came after work at night. Unfortunately, it's gotten much too crowded since then with all sorts of screamy teenagers, and it's the only place to get those addictive hotcakes. They need to expand and kick more people out who are belligerent. Pros: Great Hotcakes, Other food also good, 24 hrs breakfast Cons: Too crowded, Blocked off seat area, Building too small more

Best pancakes in the known universe! 8/11/2002

They've got the richest, yummiest flapjacks ever flapped on the face of the planet at any point in history. My family has been dining in this tiny restaurant for 3 generations. They are fabulous! I've personally tried just about every menu item, and never been disappointed. My personal favorite is the New York steak breakfast with hashbrowns. Delectable! If you're part of the after-hours crowd on Friday or Saturday, have somebody scout a table while you're in line to order. There's seating for around 50, and it disappears fast. Don't be afraid to ask a stranger to share their table.... it's part of the fun. Pros: good value, EVERY item is tasty, open 24 hours/7 days Cons: little parking, can be crowded more

A great idea at 2am 6/9/2002

Funny how appealing this place becomes after the bars close. Long lines, greasy food and a sloppy drunk clientele are somehow okay. Portions are gigantic and the hotcakes and eggs are just right to fix what ails ya. I've never been here during the day, though... Pros: lines can be long, hard to get a table more

Good 'cakes, open late 5/20/2002

After a show, this is a fun place to get a stack of pancakes and a chocolate milkshake. more
