While I was on an unexpected trip I found myself needing a place to stay for the night in the Dalles. Unfortunately every place I went and rang was booked - every place except for the Oregon Motor Motel.
Upon arrival the owner said he did have a place available but he wanted me to see the room before paying. He said that he typically does not let out the room as it is kept free for friends visiting but because it was a busy weekend he had been booking it out. I was pretty desperate at the time (it was after midnight) and decided that, while the room looked shabby and cheap, it was better than driving to another town. (I had called all the hotels and motels within a 60 mile radius - they were all booked) Keep in mind he only wanted me to look in from the doorstep..
After checking in I headed to the room. Once in there I noticed a rancid smell coming from the back that perforated the whole place. While investigating I found a back room with a kitchen that apparently had not been used for months. There were spider webs and old plates everywhere and in the fridge I found pans and dished full of rotting food. Not to mention the sheets had stains and had not been cleaned and the once white bathroom was stained brown with surface scum. I ended up spending my night sleeping on the floor on and between layers of my clothes.
That night I rang them immediately after seeing the state of the room (I should have chosen my car over that - even writing about it makes me feel dirty) and the person that I spoke to did not speak english. When I went to the front desk reception area they had locked it up and would not come to the door. In the morning I went to speak with someone but once again, no one spoke english (although I saw a couple check in and speaking with the same person right as I was leaving). They charged me $72 for the night and I was not happy about this and felt as though this should have been refunded - especially seeing as that 5 minutes after checking in I tried to contact them. Unfortunately I did have to leave due to my schedule. When I contacted them after I got home they still said they did not understand and would not do anything.
Honestly, this was a night from hell and I have considered contacting the city about the state of the rooms that they are booking. If anyone has any ideas of how I can make people aware of these lodgings it would be much appreciated. Also I have numerous photos of the bathroom, spiders, stained sheets and rotting food if anyone is interested. Wish I could post them on here!
Under no circumstances would I recommend this motel. Drive an extra 2 hours if you have to!
