Editorial review from Citysearch 8/14/2012

The hotel isn't too bad, although the guests staying there can be. However, I don't think it was worth the nearly $300/night we paid to stay there. We paid that same money in Dallas for a hotel room in the Arts District that was spacious, with beautiful furniture, fantastic view of the city, separate living room and even a dining room! When we go back to the San Antonio Riverwalk, we'll probably book at the Contessa next time (we stopped in while we were there and the guests were nicer, rooms are cheaper, and the pool looked perfect). more

Not exactly what i was expecting from this place 11/14/2010

So i got the double bubble romance package and a river view room from this place. I thought i would be all set, the romance package according to the hotel staff (they had to look it up to tell me what it included) was supposed to consist of 2 bottles of champagne, evening turndown with rose pedals and soft music, and a free breakfast voucher....and i paid about 260.00 for that. Well, what i got was 2 bottles of champaign and 2 vouchers for breakfast and that was it. Not very romantic! Also, the valet parking was $32 bucks and they dinged my driver side door. Not exactly what i was expecting from this place considering the reviews. I will never stay at this place again. more

cozy up in style 3/27/2009

Dine at Las Canarias, where it's your choice of a softly lit dining room or the Mexican tile patio with palm trees. A Sunday ""champagne brunch? features a spread of sushi, carved meat, omelets, fruits and cheeses, artfully presented desserts and more. A great 25th anniversary experience 8/30/2008

We wanted a magical anniversary place.....La Mansion came close and we would go back again. It is a challenge to get to it...downtown San Antonio has a lot of narrow one way streets. We had to go around the block twice before we found the right street to get to the hotel. Valet Parking is available $30 a night we chose the $15.00 a night parking garage just across the street because we knew we wouldn't be leaving very often. If you are going to drive around town, spend the extra $ for valet parking. The hotel itself is older, so forgiveness in the condition of the building is required: everything is clean and in good repair, but not NEW...so don't expect new. The hotel has direct access to the river walk (*WOW) The staff were welcoming; polite; & friendly. The lobby smelled amazing - fresh flowers were the secret. The elevators are visually beautiful, but slow, bouncy & small. Note: The hotel was not busy, but if it had been it would have been a long wait. The halls are clean...some are outside so not airconditioned. We were given room 629. We were told that this was a large room and it was. King size comfortable bed (not too soft, not too hard) small couch and chair. The room was clean and had all the little extras you would expect in an expensive room . It had a HUGE closet. We would suggest the following improvements to make the room perfect. 1 - a larger lcd panel tv - a 32"" is too small to view comfortably at 12 feet away - yes sometimes we watched TV. 2 - a small refrigerator (dorm size) - our restaurant leftovers had to be stored in the staff refrigerator 3 - a microwave - sometimes you just want popcorn!!! 4 - a dvd player (Movies are available through the TV but @ $12.99 (yes twelve) per viewing too expensive. For 269 a night those little extras would have made it perfect. We would go back again...but only if we could be guaranteed room 629...overall this was a quiet, relaxing and just what we wanted in an anniversary location. Pros: Direct access to the riverwalk. Clean. Excellent and attentive staff. Complimentary champagne for our anniversary. Cons: Pricey - everything costs extra....stay away from the mini fridge (it's a charge it bar, not a fridge) more

Hard to find Jewel of the Riverwalk 4/6/2008

A hard place to find and get to with all the road work congesting the downtown area. This place really went pass our expectations. We were treated like royalty for all our needs. The Valet Parking was well worth using, even though we went over budget doing so. Even though we stayed on the ""less than comfy"" area of the complex to save money, with all the halls and verandas, we were able to avoid walking through the parking garage during our stay. If this chain would give a thought to pumping AC in the halls ""across the parking garage"" the place would have NO FAULTS. Their ""Las Canaries"" restaurant is a ""must do"" while visiting the Riverwalk; well worth the price for excellent food & service. If you are flying into SA and the Riverwalk is your destination, this is the place to stay if you are looking for a romantic experience. We will be back! Pros: Most Romantic Place on the Riverwalk Cons: A hard place to find,. Halls non A/C accross parking garage. more

Nicest Restaurant on the Riverwalk! 4/6/2008

Even though they were booked the night we wanted to eat there and we had no idea to make prior reservations, the hostess was more than happy to accept us in when the place opened for dinner at 5:30PM. It was our first time there, but hopefully, it won't be our last. You get great food, fantastic service, and a wonderful view of the Riverwalk. Prices are higher than we've ever paid for, but the experience eating there was priceless! Pros: Very Romantic Cons: Very Expensive more

Delightful 3/20/2008

Food was outstanding. My wife had the filet mignon and I had the Venison Loin both were delicious. For desert we shared the bread pudding which was perfect. The server was very attentive and helpful suggesting wines for our meal. Of course the pricing was higher than I would have liked but comparable to other high end restaurants. It was a nice 5 yr Anniversary treat. more

Standout service, beautiful outdoor seating, creative and delicious food 2/13/2008

We ate dinner here because we were staying at the adjacent hotel, but it turned out to be one of the nicest meals we had had anywhere, ever. The service was standout -- welcoming, helpful, informative of the menu items, and never intrusive. The ambiance in the outdoor dining area by the river was romantic and pleasant. Every morsel of food was special, creative, and perfectly prepared, and the food was not overly rich as is the case with so many similar restaurants. I recommend the bread pudding, which was not what I expected but very interesting and delicious, more like a carmel custard than a conventional bread pudding. Even the coffee was perfect. Pros: Wonderful service and food, lovely waterfront Cons: Not a single con! more

Awesome!! 12/20/2007

Great service, great food! Expensive, but it's all worth it! Order the cheese platter no matter what! Pros: super! more

Stay away from this place 9/19/2007

The place is nice, I'll give it that and that's about it. I went there and it was dead; we were the only ones there. We received horrible service. The host took a while to seat us which is questionabel because THERE WAS NOONE THERE. The soup tasted like dirt...I'm serious. We had to ask for coffee several times...our waitress had short term memory. When we finished our main course we were not offered the dessert menu. Next time I'll take my business some where else. Pros: Pretty Cons: Poor service more

Very romantic 2/15/2007

Wonderful food with wonderful service! My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day and it was so much more than expected. The food was so delicious and cooked with flavors I've never experienced before. It's an exquisite restaurant with a relaxed environment. I've been to other high dollar restaurants where it was so uptight, I was afraid to drop a single crumb or talk too loud. Here, I felt relaxed but was still given royal treatment. My ONLY complaint was the hostess who failed to notice me standing there waiting to get her attention for quite some time and I quote ""cancelled our appointment because they only hold reservations for 15 minutes."" I'm sorry lady but it was Valentine's Day and we were only 20 minutes late. I can understand there are policies in place but there were plenty of tables open so there was no need for the rudeness. My boyfriend who came a little bit after me because he was parking the car told me she did the same thing to him. Perhaps this can be a message to get a new hostess. Other than her, my overall experience was absolutely wonderful and I will be back again! more

The Perfect Date 12/26/2006

With the holiday season in full swing my girlfriend and I have not had as many opportunities to spend time dinning out. Having purchased tickets to the show Chicago, I heard great things about the restaurant and thought what a way to start the evening. The service was impeccable, the management was over the top with kindness and went out of their way to make it a perfect date. Seared ahi tuni with a splash of fois gras was delectable, my girlfriends venison chop was perfectly cooked and my lamb melted in my mouth. If you find yourself running around and and need to take a well deserved break, Las Canarias is an oasis from the daily grind. Pros: food was amazing Cons: romantic but across from johnny rockets more

Beautiful, great customer service, but haunted 11/20/2006

I LOVE La Mansion. It is beautiful, the architecture is true to the history of the city and the employees are always helpful. It is on the riverwalk which makes it easy to walk everywhere in downtown. The only problem is it is a little haunted. We were awoken by strange experiences the last time we were there and when we questioned the hotel staff we were told that a little boy haunts the hotel and they have to use holy water and candles to make him go away! I will never stay there again after that took place, but I will really miss La Mansion. Stay there if you are not afraid of the paranormal. Pros: Beautiful hotel Cons: Haunted more

You Get What You Pay For 11/12/2006

Usually I reserve that comment for proving that free stuff isn't always best. This, on the other hand, while pricey, IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!! My husband and I had been there several times when we were out-of-towners and now that we are SA residents, we try to bring our out-of-towners there for the Sunday brunch. This staff is the most attentive in the city. The selection on the massive buffet is unbelievable and will please all. If you go, plan on spending a couple of hours and always make reservations. Ask for one of the tables by the windows overlooking the river. Relax to the sounds of the live guitar player and have a few glasses of champagne! Pros: Beautiful view, Fabulous selection more

High End Riverwalk 9/17/2006

This was the last meal I had in San Antonio, and was definitely the most worth the big money. I dined at ""Biga on the Banks"" earlier, and was very disappointed, but this place was not only beautiful, but delicious. I had the lobster salad, the foie gras, and the Amberjack--all of which were wonderful. The cheese was a great end, and the wine list VERY fairly priced and extensive. Pros: Service and Food--love the guitar player below Cons: Entrance off riverwalk hard to find more

Warm, inviting charm. Excellent restaurant. Plesant, efficient staff. 8/10/2006

My wife and I recently relocated to San Antonio from NYC and wanted to enjoy our 31st Anniversary by getting to know our new home town better. In selecting a hotel for the occasion we checked out many locations on the Riverwalk when we discovered La Mansion del Rio. Pros: Staff, atmosphere, restaurant Cons: High end of local costs but with very good value more

Most impressive 1/25/2006

I had never heard of this restaurant but was invited by a friend to dine there. The food was delicious and exquisitely presented, the servers were attentive and well-informed about the ingredients and preparation. We were surprised by ""extras"" like the wonderful assortment of breads with a black olive tapenade and truffles at the end of the meal. I couldn't think of dessert. Forgot my reading glasses, so had to beg companions to read to me and might have made other selections than what I ordered--the calamari and green salad with goat cheese. Delightful! Didn't sample the desserts but they and the cheeses certainly looked appealing. Pros: quality, presentation, ambience Cons: well, it is pricey! more

  • Perched on the celebrated River Walk, this luxurious getaway in San Antonio, TX features refined restaurants and a heated courtyard pool with bar. Omni La Mansión del Rio RiverWalk is set in a Spanish colonial building across the street from the Majestic Theatre. Refined rooms and suites boast marble bathrooms, exposed brick walls, and/or beamed ceilings. Guests also enjoy a kids program and access to an elegant spa next door at the neighboring Mokara Hotel.

Editorial
  • The Scene
This historic building began as a private school in 1854. Eventually, it evolved into St. Mary's University's law school. In 1966 the blackboards were traded in for beds, and the property became one of the most elegant hotels along the Riverwalk. Its refined atmosphere is a welcome respite from the riverside bustle.

    The Details
Today visitors are greeted by a lobby filled with Spanish and Mexican antiques. Although the building's collegiate days are over, they are recalled in El Colegio, an intimate piano bar that was once the university library. Like the public areas, guest rooms and suites echo the Spanish history of the area. Many have beamed ceilings and graceful arches, as well as private balconies overlooking the River Walk.
