Oasis of Italian food on Van Nuys Blvd. 2/28/2007

This was a pleasant surprise! Tucked away on a busy stretch of Van Nuys Blvd., Oliva is a cute Italian restaurant. Great, prompt service and a nice menu led to a fantastic meal. The gnocchi with meat sauce tasted fresh and hot and the portions were a perfect size. Like a good restaurant, they will make tailor a dish to your specifications by changing the sauce or the type of pasta with no questions asked. Even the cappucino was a surprise. Although its location (and parking) on Van Nuys Blvd. may seem a little daunting this is a little breath of North Jersey in Sherman Oaks, and a good value. Best Italian restaurant 2/23/2007

I have not found any other italian restaurant that comes close to this cute place. I try to eat there at least every month. The food is wonderful and light (the pasta never feels like it's drowning in sauce). The bread they bring out for you along with the tomatoes/garlic are so delicious and enough to make you full before you even order your dinner! The chocolate cake for dessert is one of the best I've had. And the owners are so nice and attentive (I don't think I've ever gone to a restaurant before where the entire staff says goodnight as you are leaving!). I love this restaurant! Whenever anyone asks me where I want to go for good Italian food, I always respond, ""Oliva!"" I have never had a bad meal there, and the service is extraordinary. I always feel like a family friend when I dine at Oliva. Charming atmosphere. I also love the Thursday martini nights. Great place! Absolutely Sensational, A 10+! 4/30/2006

I have come to Oliva several times and had the pleasure of the most outstanding ""all Italian"" service anywhere outside of Italy. The food is remarkably consistent! Great affordable wine list! Best deal anywhere on Valentines day! They only charge $40/person (most places get you for atleast $75 per person) plus they are so accomodating and everything is always FRESH!! Excellent, excellent restaurant. From pastas to chicken or seafood, I have never been disappointed. Warm service, nice wine list, but best of all food that is authentic and very tasty. I always recommend this restaurant to friends. Unlikely location, superb dishes. more

Horrible Valentine's Day 2/13/2006

Highly expensive. The food was horrible, my husband had lobster that had gone bad. Fish is not supposed to smell and my chicken was tough and tasteless. Our salads both came without dressing and were wilted. We left without dessert and paid $91 for bad service, bad food and made our valentine's day, bad, bad, bad! No love was present at this place! Also they packed us in like sardines, so my husband and I had to yell at eachother if we wanted to be heard. more

we really weren't impressed with the cooking at this place. we came on a saturday and the place was pretty full so we had a bit of a wait. we ordered the caprese salad as a starter and that was pretty good, very fresh mozzarella. the main courses weren;t as good; i had the spaghetti mare which was very saucy and not much else. nothing else looked that great on the menu though. the desserts were pretty good; the ricotta cheesecake stood out more than the tiramisu. probably not a place we'd go to anytime soon. Best Italian food in LA No doubt. 8/31/2005

Never mind that i am 100 Lbs If there is one thing i know its good food. Not only is the food outrageous Luigi and Giorgio provide excellent service and can accomodate even the most bizzare requests. Sadly our dog Luigi past away 2 days before my husbands birthday. I asked if we could have a table outside for 10 so we could bring our dog Lena (we didnt want to leave her by herself) No problem !!! They set up a large table on the sidewalk just for us. If you get a chance to meet Giorgio he is a riot! Drinks are amazing and the ""turkish coffee"" is great. They have a great selection of wine and liquor just ask what they recommend and you cant go wrong. Pros: Food, Bar, Service Cons: gets a little crowded more

Extremely disappointed 2/19/2005

Things started off really well - we ordered a house cocktail which were brought promptly and then we ordered our salads and entrees. The first thing that's odd is that there's a full bar but no bartender - it appears all the waiters make their own drinks. Big problem. Long story short we never saw our waiter again and had even told him we wanted a bottle of wine - guess he didn't want a $30 sale for the restaurant. We had to ask other waiters if we needed anything. And there was a manic waiter RUNNING up and down the very narrow aisle putting himself and patrons in jeopardy. Oh, the salads were good but the safretto ravioli was bland and the steak dry and tasteless. Pros: none to speak of Cons: Service more

Cute Italian Restaurant! 2/12/2005

This restaurant is a hidden gem. Inside, walls are covered by murals of Italian images. Waitors are friendly and love conversation. The bread baskets are filled with wonderful bread and comes with a flavorful bruschetta mixture. The food is really good and affordable here, but be wary of the daily specials with lobster. Oliva is not only the best italian I've had but the service is prompt and courteous and the atmosphere is very charming. I highly recommend Oliva for an outstanding dining experience. Good Italian 5/16/2002

I try to go to Oliva at least once every couple of months. The food is very good and the service is outstanding. They treat you like a regular even if you aren't one, and their prices are very reasonable. Try to get a table near the wall. They are a bit more private, and since the restaurant has very high ceilings, you can feel very exposed at the tables in the middle of the restaurant. more
