Tasty, Lacking Atmosphere, Expensive 9/12/2011

The sushi is very good and they have some really great special rolls. However, I don't think the high prices are justified, especially for a place (dining area AND kitchen) that is smaller than my first apartment in Boston (500 sq. ft.) and outside of the city. The place only fits about 8-10 people at the sushi bar and if you are looking for a table for 2, get ready to share the same table with 2 other people. I just feel that for such small real estate, they could cut their customers a break on price. 1 special roll with crabstick, mango, cuke, and roe covered in spicy tuna is $16!! I've found just as tasty and high quality spots in the Boston area that is much more reasonably priced. more

Cheap and tasty 5/6/2009

Really cheap ($27 for sushi for two? I think) and pretty good sushi this side of town. Not spectacular, but the chefs have good skill. ( I think the skill of the chefs are comparable to that of high class sushi places like Nobu in NYC, but the ingreidients are not as high class.) Almost no space to sit in.... impossible for parties larger than 4 (There's like 10 seats) but takeout was pretty fast. All in all, pretty tasty sushi for a great price ! And it's by a real Japanese person... so it gets 5 stars lol Pros: cheap price Cons: small space/ no parking/ long wait more

Good sushi 12/25/2008

Good selection of sushi and certainly a great ambiance \r I love their suhi bar interaction - you can see teh shshi masters in action - brings a lot of charm and authenticity to teh place.\r The place was full when we went their and got seated immediately. more

You've lost that loving feeling and the quality, over priced. Actually, really bad food. 7/23/2008

I first went to Oishii back in 2000 and the food was amazing. Rumor has it that the chef had worked at Nobu (NYC). Fast forward to 2008, the menu is still the same, dated since early 2000. The food is awful and expensive. ($82 for 2 rolls and a couple of apps and 1 beer for 2 people) I wonder if they changed ownership? I had the hamachi tata app ($17) and it was a spoonful of pre-chopped fish in sour soy sauce that can give your stomach ulcer. The nuta octopus ($8) was supposed to be marinated in a special Japanese sauce, well it arrived covered with American mayo ! The decor is still the same, dingy and cramped. The food used to be great so the place was charming. Now, it is just dingy and smelly. Recently I had take out with a friend and we both had stomach issues at 5am till the next afternoon. The more I think about what I have eated tonight, I am feeling sick to my stomach. Needless to say, I won't be going back and I do not recommend this to anyone. Cons: the worst Japanese food ever more

Stick with Sushi and Sashimi - rolls were average -below avg 6/5/2008

We had a spread of sushi, sashimi and rolls. We were impressed with the freshness of the fish. However we were disappointed about the rolls. Other area restaurant such as Ginza (Boston one) would be a better choice for rolls. more

best sushi 12/3/2007

This place is awesome. The wait is usually long and it's not exactly romantic or anything, but the food tastes great. There is no better place for fresh and yummie sushi and appetizers in all of Boston. \r \r If you like things spicy, I suggest the maki with baked scallop on top. It might be called Jeffrey's maki or something. It's a person's name.\r \r I also love the scorched yellow tail maki and the black cod is delicious! If you are a sushi lover you must go! Pros: Food Cons: No tables more

Highly overrated! 8/21/2007

I just do not understand why this place is suppose to be good. Last time I went here, I ended up in the bathroom for the rest of my night. It is overpriced, crowded, horrbile service, and dirty. Do not recommend this place at all... I think the supermarket offers better sushi. Pros: cant think of any Cons: the list goes on and on more

Eat at your own risk 3/25/2007

I have eaten at both Oishii in the South End and the one on Hammond street. At both places I have had terrible service. This specific location has been the worst. One time I ordered the black cod, and they forgot to bring it out even after our sushi came out. The second time I ordered the black cod thinking it would be as the same quality as the black cod in the south end, instead it was very dry and lacked any flavor. By this point was ready to swear off Oishii forever, but decided to give it one last try today. I ordered many pieces of sushi and was very unsatisfied with them, when I went to complain the waitress said there was nothing she could do about giving us any refund on our bill not even so little as 5$. My point is, if you eat at oishii and are not satisfied with the quality of sushi, you will get no sympathy and will have to pay the hefty bill anyway. It's just poor business, I will never go back. Eat at your own risk! Cons: at least 30 min wait, no compassion for complaints more

SImply Average (Sushi Rolls do not a true sushi bar make) 3/15/2007

Sushi Rolls do not a true sushi bar make. Having eaten at restaurants like Nobu, Masa, Sushi Yasuda, Jewel Bako and other top sushi restaurants in the United States this is merely average fair. I don?t understand why this is rated as high as it is and why a foodie like Caroline Yeh raves about this place. \r \r The fish is fresh but average, the presentation and orginality is lacking. This merely an average sushi experinces. \r \r I have also had the pleasure of eating at Kyubei 8-7-6 Ginza Chuo-ku Tokyo, Japan. And had the privilege of meeting the second generation Kyubei himself. \r \r Kyubei has been opened for 71 years and it just doesn?t get any better than this. In this temple of sushi only the freshets of fish on perfectly flavored rice some with a hint of wasabi, some with a hint of grated lime is offered up and eaten by true sushiphiles using their fingers to hold the tender succulent morsels up to their eager mouths. There are no bottles of soy on the bar and no wasabi is provided. The sushi is served as the chef see fit.\r \r Live shrimp, uni, abalone, tuna belly, yellow tail, all presented on handcrafted pottery. The best I ever had a set of 12 pieces chosen by the chef (omakase shimasu"", which means roughly, ""I trust you [the chef]."" was $80.00 USD with a glass of cold premium sake. \r \r Sorry Oishii????.\r \r I will actually be in Boston on business and I am looking at trying Ken Oringer UNI. Lets see if it holds up to my criteria for great sushi. \r Pros: Qucik Services Cons: Run of mill sushis for the price more

Very Mediocre food, high prices (especially given the mediocre food 3/12/2007

Given the stellar reviews (Best sushi this side of Tokyo), we had really high expectations. The food was very very disappointing. It was just mediocre and some of the fish did not appear to be fresh. Also this location has very few chairs so be prepared for a long wait.\r \r Perhaps their main location in Boston is better but the Chestnut Hill locations was so disappointing that I don't even feel like giving them a second chance. Cons: Mediocre food, long wait for a few chairs more

Even good vegetarian options! 1/28/2007

Loved it. Some of the best sushi ever. My husband is a pure vegetarian and got some really good veggie sushi options (shikate mushroom tempura and veggie tempura) for a change. \r Try the cones and even the soups - delicious. Seating is a little tight but one could say its cozy. Pros: Best japanese food we've ever had. Great variety Cons: Street parking - dont use the lot across the street - they supposedly tow more

...Awe-some. 12/7/2006

We were lucky to arrive just before the rush and didn't have to wait. It was an early weekday around 6. The sushi chiefs were friendly, the service was nice, and the sushi.... was excellent. We ordered the Jeffery Role, Alligator Roll, and Tuna, Salmon cucumber roll along with various nigiri--including octopus and salmon. The salmon was incredible. We didn't realize the cucumber roll didn't have nori or rice, so we didn't love that one, but the other two were beyond delicious. The best sushi I have ever had. The price is high, but you don't mind paying it. The atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired and as there was a 15+ person wait halfway through out meal, we were rushed a bit... I'd feel more comfortable paying Oishii's prices if I could take my time, enjoy the atmosphere, and my dining partner (sushi bars don't really encourage this.) However the food was still delicious. I hope to try the new location with more tables that takes reservations. Despite the cons, which seem important, the food quality definitely makes up for it. GO NOW. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Pros: DELICIOUS FOOD. Cons: Atmopshere, rushing you out, cost, no reservations, space. more

Can't beat it...no sushi in the boston area compares!!! 11/12/2006

I have been here a ton of times. Go to the Chestnut Hil one, NOT the Boston one...it's just not the same. The small, cramped seating at the sushi bar and long waits are so worth it out here in the suburbs, it is what makes Oishii, Oishii. This place lives up to its name: it is SO DELICIOUS. Try to come in smaller groups and call ahead to have them put your name down on the handwritten list inside of the front door. Once seated you will forget about the people crowding at the front door for a peek anxiously waiting outside and some almost peering over your shoulder. With the sushi chefs working quickly right before your eyes, you instantly feel tranported from US to a little local street restaurant in Japan. Each plated beautifully, there are almost too many options to pick from and all are great. The portions are great as well, lots of fish for your money. Make sure you order the tempura'd sweet potato roll, actually make sure you get 2!!! If you are local or willing to drive out there, call ahead for take-out, so many people do and it is the best use of time if you are itching for an amazing sushi experience, but nothing beats sitting down and experiencing the restaurant at least once! There's a reason this place gets the highest boston zagat rating... Pros: Sushi, Value Cons: Wait more

One Of The Best In The USA 10/2/2006

I have eaten sushi at the best places in Los Angles, New York and Tokyo and Oishii is one of the best I have ever tried. I would rank it in the top five in the USA. The reason is obvious once you view the daily fresh sheet. Uni from Hokkaido, hamachi and blue fin tuna flown in that day from Tokyo as well as numerous other offerings from various locales around the world. The Chestnut Hill location is very similar to a Tokyo sushi bar, only one table and 13 seats at the sushi bar. A wait is inevitable. \r \r Because of the top notch quality they serve, prices are higher at Oishii than at your average sushi bar. But it is oh so worth it. Pros: Top notch sushi and sashimi. Cons: Long wait at the teeny Chestnut Hill location. more
