Rekindled my love with sushi 7/16/2009

I used to visit Octopus all the time years ago. I moved away then returned and sort of forgot how good the place was. After going to Fusion sushi for the last 2 years and frankly getting fed up with spitting out 80% of the sushi I ordered because it tasted horrible, I decided to head back to Octopus. Everything tasted like heaven and the chefs are serious about their craft and it shows. Reasonable prices, excellent service, and tranquil atmosphere make this my favorite and most consistent sushi joint. Pros: Excellent and fresh sushi Cons: sometimes tough to find parking more

MAGNIFICENT ! 6/9/2009

I think my visit to Octopus has always been very pleasant. They've added quite a bit of new appetizers and rolls since my last visit (where was I??) to Octopus. I tried their new sashimi plate... Seared Tuna with special sauce... that was absolutely ONE OF THE BEST sashimi I've ever had. The servers have always been very attentive and kind. Good service, and the FOOD IS ALWAYS TOP NOTCH. SUSHI IS ALWAYS CAREFULLY DONE. I highly recommend the seared tuna sashimi with their special sauce, seabass ..etc.. EVERYTHING IS GOOD. Pros: HIGH QUALITY food Cons: not good for kids more

Octopus has ROCKED the South Bay for 20+ years! 11/3/2008

I don't know what reviewer chrissy's problem was, but I have eaten at Octopus like a bazillion times, and my husband was even there on their opening day maybe 21 years ago. Pretty good longevity for someplace that the reviewer dislikes! Pros: Great service, great FRESH sushi Cons: Decor is a little bland, but sit at the sushi bar and you won't notice. more

Worst Sushi in MB, southbay, and I've ever had 10/21/2008

I appreciate a local restaurant. You don't have to be flashy or full of excitement, as long as you offer good food and a good price. Octopus has no ambiance or charm. It is bland and barely even feels like a restaurant. On a Saturday night, there were 4 people in there, so we decided to skip. But on a tuesday, again, only 4 people, we decided to give it a chance. Well, you would think this restaurant would make up in food what they lack in decor, ambiance, character- WRONG. The edamame was cold and slimy. The tuna roll was bland and the sushi was a bit hard and grainy- NOT FRESH. My fiance and I had 1 roll, and 2 pieces of sushi and water- bill came to $30!!!! We were shocked.....at least if it was cheap I'd understand. With all the new and fun spots in the MB neighborhood, I am surprised Octopus is still there. Octopus- HANG UP YOUR CHOPSTICKS. more

Best Sushi for a good price 8/25/2008

Sit at the sushi bar and let the chef prepare whatever they feel is the best that day. The sushi rolls aren't good here but the sushi bar is amazing!!! Avoid the rolls and order the real stuff. Their sushi was as good as Nobu, the scallops were as good as Sushi Sasabune, or Katsuya. It's not a flashy place by any means but definitely my favorite pick in LA for the moderate price level. Okay Sushi 11/11/2007

There aren't that many great sushi restaurants in MB and Octopus hasn't been consistant. Many trips they have been great, but the last few times the sushi wasn't the best. It is not that crowded and easy to get a table, but the servers do not speak great English. The prices are very reasonable. more

Seabass fan!! 6/15/2007

I loooove their Chilean Seabass. My friends and I often try new sushi places and what I really like about octopus is that they have more than just sushi. Lots of tapas to chose from and they're all so delicious. I've only been here five times, but i was happy with everything I ordered. Pros: friendly servers/SEABASS IS SUPER! Cons: almost like a date spot. probably a casual date spot :) more

Few of my girlfriends have taken me to this restaurant for my 21st birthday and I was pleased with the food that they have served here. It was fun! So, I asked my boyfriend to take me here on Valentine's Day and the restaurant had given all the women a nice long stem rose! I thought that was soooo sweet. Aside from this wonderful service, their toro was on the high end, but it literally melted in my mouth!! They don't have a full bar, but it didn't matter because the food was delisssh! I would not recommend a rowdy young crowd because I think the crowd they have are mature residents. Pros: authentic, service, good food Cons: non-romantic, no full bar more

Just simple and great 12/18/2004

I just got back from Octopus. I had a holiday dinner for a party of 10. Despite being a Saturday evening, I called and asked to see if they can accommodate us this very last minute. Although they were busy and could not accommodate me at the peak hour, the hostess' had the ""no problem"" attitude and accommodated us 30 minutes prior to my requested time. When we got there, all of us felt very welcomed, no attitude, and sat us promptly. I go to this restaurant with the local friends in Manhattan Beach and this is the exact reason why. Great food, AWESOME service. When we were leaving, the place was still busy but so many ""thank you"" and ""arigato"" from the staffs there. it was my first time at octopus and i had such great time. I'm a sushi fan and i've been to many places, but this place is the best. I honestly think octpus has the best quality. it was a bit expensive compared to the places i've been to before, but i was satisfied. you get what you pay for and i got my fresh sushi from the best chefs. i like their authentic style + special rolls that aren't overly ""americanized."" more

I love this place because I can walk in casually with jeans, flip flops, and a t shirt. KID FRIENDLY! Some may not like that, then go later. For quick and friendly service, I cannot really complain. It may be standard, and I've gone to other places, but I came back to Octopus. No long fancy wine list to choose from. I don't think that is what they sell anyways. On weekends it is packed, but the wait is no more than 15 minutes. Compared to the weekdays, the weekend service may be just a bit slower, but still it exceeds par. If you don't know sushi, just order bunch of their appetizers! It's cheap and filling! Ice cold Japanese beer with sake and their Crazy Roll is my absolute favorite. Octopus is rated #2 by Reader's Choice best sushi restaurant... how can they be ""THE WORST""??? (some wacko who knows nothing about REAL SUSHI wrote a terrible review for this restaurant which I think is just nonsense. I hope city-search removes it, because Octopus deserves a lot more respect that what that person wrote!!) I love sushi and this is one of the very few restaurants that offer a great range of appetizers, sushi, and dinner combo menus... I've took so many friends to go eat, and NOBODY has ever complained!! Good Food 4/3/2004

I've been to most of the sushi places by manhattan beach, but this place is my fav. They have traditional style sushi as well as special rolls that are very artistic and creative. The presentaion is just great! =) I can even take my friends that can't have sushi, cuz they have sukiyaki teriyaki and bunch of other good food. I looooooove their seaweed saladdddd. They're always packed on the weekends, but I usually make reservations. That way I know I don't have to end up going to some wannabe sushi restaurants out there. yummmmm.
