Nuway House is a halfway house for recovering addicts and alcoholics. I was unfortunate enough to have spent time there a couple of years ago during the summer months, it was an experience I will never forget. I will say this, the one thing that I did get from Nuway is gratitude, I am grateful for what I have now because my stay there was the worst month of my life.
First of all, let me point out that the staff at Nuway is decent, they seem to have a genuine concern for the well being of the people in their charge. However, the accomodations are nothing short of appauling, and I've lived in some rough places, including being homeless for a period of time. It is brutally hot there during the summer, no air conditioning, 30+ men packed into a house that would normally hold 10 people at most and large appliances running, temperatures average around 85 degrees, even warmer on hot days. Nuway had a severe bedbug problem while I was there, I was bitten all over my body and had to change rooms 3 times. The place literally looks like nothing has been updated in 35 years. The carpet is rotten, there is black mold in the bathrooms and the beds are in terrible shape. I had to wait a week before I received a pillow. My bed was in such poor shape I had to sleep on the floor. It would only take a few thousand bucks to turn Nuway into a tolerable place. There is no excuse for a facility to be in such condition, people recovering from drug and alcohol use are often sick and still withdrawing, this is not the place to do it.
I will mention a couple of positive things about Nuway, the food is decent, at least it was when I was there. The staff, counseling sessions and people I met there were good people. Unfortunately, the place is such poor condition that everyone is miserable. If you go there during the winter I imagine it would be more tolerable as the heat was one of the biggest problems, even on mild days.
The bottom line is, obviously Nuway is better than being homeless, if you don't have another option than go. Keep in mind that once you are there you will need to use public transportation. Most places will have vans or drivers that can take you to the hospital, or doctors appointments if you are ill. No chance of that happening at Nuway. Always check with your case worker or counselors though, because there are usually other options available. This is simply my opinion of Nuway, I believe the owner is charging the county (or insurance companies) way too much and putting none of that money into the place to make it a better environment.
