something different on Ocean Park 7/1/2009

Ocean Park Blvd needed a place like this - ""novel"" in every sense of the word. My 4-year old's favorite place for grilled cheese sandwich, and she knows her grilled cheese. I'm vegetarian, and lots of menu selections for any meal. Wait/staff are all very friendly. Don't bother waiting 20 minutes at The Counter, this place has great veg. burger! Pros: great vegetarian selection Cons: a little pricey more

Great Place To Study or Have Lunch 10/22/2008

I've been to the other Novel Cafes in Santa Monica. This is more like a cafe/restaurant than the coffee/book house on Pier Ave but it is still very good. I see a lot of people going for lunch and dinner during the day, or stopping by in the morning for a quick cup of coffee/latte. The ambience is quite nice, again very different from the other two. I ate breakfast there, even though it was 2pm. Good eggs, great potatoes. I saw them bring out salads and burgers that looked INCREDIBLE though. So I guess that I am going back for those soon. Friendly wait staff and a really nice patio to eat out on during your lunch break. Highly recommend. Pros: Fast Service, great food, nice alternative Cons: Probably wouldn't study here. more

Great nook, but the original location is still the best 7/10/2008

The Novel has several locations in and around the Santa Monica area, and they all serve up the same great selection of tea and coffee, and pretty good breakfast food as well--The lox platter is my fav. As far as ambiance goes, though, the new expansions lack the cozy, book-ish feel that makes the original novel off of Main make you feel like you've found something special, that the rest of the world knows nothing about. more

Wonderful Pico/Ocean Park neighborhood spot -- consistently good food!! 5/6/2008

This is good food, well priced. If you get tired of waiting for space at The Counter, this is a good alternative in the same shopping area. Salads are really fresh and inventive, breakfasts are very nice and you can actually hear your partner's conversation! The Huevos Rancheros recently were perfectly made and just spicy enough. Come on folks, if you want glam or foie gras, go elsewhere on the westside, but this is consistently good food, served in a homey atmosphere, with great natural light and outdoor eating space. It's perfect for dining alone or with friends. Pros: easy parking; relaxing ambience; good service more

what happened to the real coffehouse? 3/6/2008

i think the novel cafe was bought by someone who has 6 or 7 places. this is not a real coffeehouse. food is ok but not great. the best coffee house in los angeles was Anastasias Asylum. It disappeared after being on wilshire for over 10 years. no one knows what happened. best food and vibe..we miss it more

Nothing to write home about... 1/28/2008

The ambiance is below average, the service isn't that good and the food is average. Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving it a bad review per se, it's just very average. If you are just looking for a decent sandwich and salad, at a reasonable price, this is the place for you. Just don't expect too many frills. Pros: Free Parking Cons: Not very exciting more

Best soups 1/19/2008

I come in almost everyday for their daily soups. My favorite is their tortilla soup. The manager of the place old us that the soups were made from scratch and you can tell they are. I highly recommend this place to health conscious foodies. Pros: Service and the comfy couches more
