Couldn't ask for a better vet 3/1/2011

I've been going to this vet for years and they have always been very nice and helpful. Little did I know how great they really were. Our guinea pig Ham had to have a bladder stone removed. Dr. Martin, Dr Homison, and the whole staff watched over our piggy like he was their own, and in a way he is, he really loves those guys. Dr. Martin has really taken great care of our pig, and I strongly believe if we would have went somewhere else our other piggy Eggs would be all we have right now. Dr Martin and her staff have gone above and beyond anything I have ever seen to get Ham back on his feet. She is extremely helpful and explains things very well. As much as she loves our Hammy she told us upfront the risks, and we decided to go ahead with the surgery. Ham is still alive and kicking but to be honest after seeing how much TLC they gave him, even if he wouldn't have made it I would still be satisfied knowing that NP did everything they could and more for our piggy. This will be our vet of choice as long as they are there, and we plan on having pets the rest of our lives. more

Good vets, but very pricey 6/5/2010

I've been going to NP Vet for years. I've always received wonderful service and my pets have been very well taken care of while there. They have been excellent at scheduling appointments for me, even at the last minute. Unfortunately, prices have gone up as of late and quite frankly I can no longer afford to continue receiving service at their office. A recent visit resulted in a $620 bill, a friend had her dog to her vet in the area, received almost identical care PLUS SOME and her bill was $237. This is a HUGE difference and one that I can't ignore since it's happened consistantly when I compare what I paid for a service vs. what friends are paying for the same services. \r It's sad when you must give up your trusted veterinary provider simply because they feel they need to charge fees, not just a bit over the going rate, but a LOT over what others in the area are charging. I don't know of a single other vet who charges $45 to insert an IV catheter, usually that is included in the price of the IV alone, there is no separate charge for it. Prices for x-rays are within reason, but every other charge I've ran in to is not in comparison.\r Sad to say, I'm changing vets soon so I can stop draining my savings account and maxing out my credit cards for what should be fairly routine procedures. Pros: excellent care Cons: prices are through the roof more

What does Emergency means to them?? 2/16/2010

When I called about my kitten was dying, they had me to come all the way out there from in Pittsburgh since I didn't know where another emg vet would be... somehow I was trying to save my kitten on the way, I arrived, NOBODY wasn't in the front of office, my boyfriend knocked on door no answer so I yelled HELLO, then two people came... had me to fill out paper which my boyfriend did, and waited too long for finally a woman took my kitten after seeing I was trying to blow to help her breathe... then bam next two mins after took her in said she didn't make it? wtf she was grasping for breathe and then tell me my kitten didn't make it? I don't trust that business and won't even go there again. I'm very hurtful by this business due to my loss kitten today and she'll terribly be missed. R.I.P Roxxi, I'm going to miss you terribly and def will miss those moments when you slept beside me, cuddling into my neck... Missin' you Roxxi... Pros: I called they sounded friendly Cons: arrived, awful business more

legendary service 12/25/2009

my cat got very sick and almost blocked and no other vet was open/emergency vet's were way too expensive. i called from a phonebook and it was one of the dr.'s (so sorry i dont remember her name) cell phones..she was off work but make a special exception for me, who has never been there before, and came to the office and saved my kitty. Pros: kind, knowledgeable Cons: slow more

Rabies 3/24/2009

These people have no regard for the PA state law regarding Rabies vaccines. The law requires a 3 yr. They give a 2 year and say they don't want to over medicate. Who are they kidding. How about they DO want to take your money. Not to mention the health and welfare of your dog or cat. Rabies are rare in PA, so don't let them tell you they don't have good results from a 3 year. Not true. In an age where we are finding out the severe health problems from over medicating, these people have no regard for your pet and just want your money. You can check the PA State Law. more

Hold on to your wallet! 3/24/2009

These people have no regard for the the State Law concerning Rabies Vaccines. They insist on giving a 2 yr Rabies shot when the law states 3 yr. They tell you the 3 yr are not effective due to rabies cases. There has maybe been 10, if that, cases of rabies in the ENTIRE state of PA in the last 8 years. This is vaccinating for money not the health or concern of the animal. Pros: Don't know of any Cons: Make their own rules. more

confused 1/7/2009

very confusing and dissapointing lots of diagnoses no treatment options diagnosed with diabetes but wouldn't prescribe medication diagnosed with pancreatitis but not given treatment solutions the medicine they did give made him sick but they just became defensive and protective of their combined years of experience if you have all this experience then why can't you give the right medicine lots of animals have diabetes but they were unable to recommend a dosage and said what if he isn't diabetic all they wanted was money for more treatments to hospitalize him and give him iv fluids they are really clueless and greedy said this was their slow time guess they need the money Cons: lots of talk no action more

Extremely expensive 5/29/2008

I am a brand new owner of a newfoundland puppy who has developed cherry eye. I took my puppy to Northern Pike vet for an initial appointment. The vet was very friendly and spent her time seeing my pup. She mentioned giving him eye drops to keep away infection until a surgery could be performed but then stated it would probably not be worth it because of the immense difficulty we experienced just trying to put a drop in his eye during the appointment. I was given a quote of $550 to $650 for the surgery ($650 if I wanted to get all of the necessary aftercare meds). I was also told that I need to get the surgery done in the next couple of weeks. I called around and got quotes from two other vets which were significantly less, $216 and $275! I am disgusted with the fact that this vet clinic feels they should charge three times as much as the surgery costs elsewhere! Also, the day after my appointment, I contacted the office to obtain the eye drops for my pup because I felt I would be able to administer them to him. I was told that the receptionist would consult with the vet that saw him and get back to me. I never received a return phone call. Finally, I was told by every other vet and dog breeder I have talked to that the surgery is only an emergency if the eye is bothering the dog or there is an infection. My dog has neither and the vet knows that. I feel this vet clinic is unethical in it's charges and by rushing me into a surgery. I truly believe they wanted me to rush so that I would not have the time to have him seen elsewhere and get more realistic quotes for the surgery. I appreciate the convenient hours they provide but am not willing to pay extremely high prices for them. Even the cost of the office visit is much more than anywhere else. Pros: Convenient hours and the staff seem to care while you are there Cons: Very high prices, the staff doesn't care once you leave more

You get what you pay for 4/27/2008

Northern Pike Veterinary Hospital is, in my opinion, reasonably priced for the services they offer. All of the vets are incredibly kind and knowledgeable. They've always squeezed me in when I have a time constraint, and my pets get a very thorough exam each time they've been seen. They even have a mobile office that will come to your house if you want. I used this service in February and it was so much easier than dragging my then 15 month old puppy and 10 year old cat in to the office. My puppy was cryptorchid and they did a wonderful job with his neutering. I've had visits with all of the vets and wouldn't recommend one over another-- they are all simply fantastic. They take their time with you and your pet. I won't go anywhere else. I worked for two other vet clinics while I was in college, so I have a little experience and know what I like in a veterinarian. Northern Pike exemplifies good veterinary service. Pros: thorough, good listeners, friendly, knowledgeable, convenient more

DO NOT put your trust in this facility! 12/3/2007

I took in my litter of puppies to be examined for the first time. There are 11 puppies and I was charged $308 for this visit. I was told that it was $35 for each dog, which is their normal price for a 30 to 45 minute appointment. I was given a 20% discount for having multiple dogs, which brought our total to $308 for the 75 minutes we spent there. They made it sound like they were giving me a discount. In all actuality, what we spent should have bought us 5 1/2 hours with the vet. I was also quoted a price to have their dewclaws removed for 8 of them at $30 each to equal $240. Thinking this was all a bit expensive, and this being my first litter of pups, I made a few phone calls to other vets in our town. Astonished at my findings... ALL 3 of the other local vets quoted the same examination I received for $40, $40 and $29 dollars for all 11 dogs to be seen. They ALL said they would not charge individual prices for each dog and instead just charge for 1 appointment. I also got a quote for the dewclaw removal as follows... $15 each per pup, $30 each, and $20-$25 each. Even though 2 of the other vet offices charged less than and even half the price for the dewclaw removal, the difference in the examination appointment is what is astronomical. I called Northern Pike to discuss this with them. They said that is what they charge and they were unwilling to discuss it any further. They also told me to make an appointment else ware to have the dogs dew claws removed because they will not see them now. I wanted to speak with the owner in person and asked if I could come into the office. I was told not to and that they ""would consider that harassment."" Being a new litter owner and a pet owner wanting to what?s right for my pets, I put my trust in their facility to do right by me. I feel hurt and violated. It was my $308 loss. Don?t let it be yours. Cons: outrageously overpriced in comparison to other town offices more
