The North Carolina Art Museum is a first rate art museum at a decent price—free! For the permanent stuff that is. If you want to go to the special showings like Picasso, Rodin, Matisse, etc., you’ll have to fork over a good chunk of change, but typically the showings are much less big names, so the prices are fairly nominal. The restaurant downstairs serves pretty good food, but the prices are high. Best to be avoided if at all possible. The down side is that the museum is pretty small. Unlike the NY Met and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, you can really knock this museum out in an afternoon. But they do keep rotating showings pretty regularly, so there’s usually something new to see.
