Most authentic Japanese food in Houston... 3/19/2008

Nippon Restaurant was one of the first Japanese restaurants in Houston and is run by a husband (Naoki-san) and wife (Miami-san) team. The food is delicious, and very authentic. My mother is Japanese, and Nippon is where I go when I miss the homecooked Japanese meals (from umeboshi onigiri to sukiyaki) from my childhood. The sushi portions are less American-sized than other, trendier restaurants, but the fish is fresher and tastier than those trendy sushi spots. In Japan, sushi is a food of celebration, so go celebrate your love of fresh, delicately-flavored sushi and sashimi at Nippon...but don't forget to sample the reasonably-priced bento box lunch specials and the deeply-satisfying noddle dishes (I recommend the tempura udon). Appetizers I recommend are the seaweed salad and the hotate butter yaki (scallops cooked in a butter-white wine sauce). Pros: great sushi, authentic Japanese dishes, nice ambience Cons: parking, Japanese-style service that can seem slow to Americans (the server will not come to you for fear of being rude without you calling for service) more

Outstanding 2/25/2008

My huband and I have eaten at Nippon no less than 20 times. I can say with absolutely no exaggeration that we have not had one single bad experience. We have been for dinner and for lunch (with lunch being our favorite as they have wonderful bentos), we have been seated inside and outside (with our favorite being at the bar) and 100% recommend everything we have tasted. The sushi has never been anything but extraordinary (Naoki is amazing) and the tempuras light and delicious. We recommend the toro, maguro, sake (fresh and smoked), tai, unagi, tako and spicy tuna. A definite must. Pros: Sushi and atmosphere Cons: Can have slow service at times more

Authentic Japanese food, only one in town 2/2/2008

only place I have found in town for Authentic Japanese food. The place is very ""Japanese"" in format and culture, too, so it's a bit weird for taking friends there. You do have to call your server (typical in Japan. They don't disturb you because it's considered rude) and a lot of the staff is Japanese, however I felt that this was a good thing, since it really made the experience authentic. Pros: food, authenticity Cons: parking more

Most Authentic Japanese Food in Houston 1/17/2008

I don't know what the last person to post was talking about. I lived in Japan for a year and this is the closest food that I can find in the city of Houston to what I ate daily in Japan not only in variety but also in the quality of the food but most importantly the taste. What is the point of going out to dinner at a Japanese food resturant if you're going to be served the food you can eat at every other place? Nippon truely goes above and beyond in making sure you get the best food possible for prices that more than favorably compare to the ""new hot spot"" sushi places. I think that it would be a service to oneself to come try the food here and ask the sushi chef's for suggestions if you are lost, they know the menu and if you tell them what you like they can help you order an entire meal. Service like this isn't found anywhere, only at Nippon. Pros: Great food, great service, friendly atmosphere Cons: parking more

Worst service in Houston 12/13/2007

I came here with several friends and not ONCE did a server come to the table. We had to go inside and find a server for drink orders, refills, our food order, the check, and every. single. thing. Yet, the people sitting around us were served hand and foot, from the moment they sat down until the moment they left. The sushi was mediocre and WAY overpriced for 4 tiny pieces. I have never once complained at a restaurant but we did not understand why we were treated this way. When I approached the manager, her reply was, ""You only ordered a few entrees, right?"" WHAT???? That is preposterous and unacceptable in my opinion. I eat sushi EVERY day, and unfortunately tried to give this restaurant a chance. I will NEVER go there again. EVER. Pros: NONE. Cons: PLENTY. more

Best Japanese Restaurant 10/31/2007

Simply the best Japanese restaurant I have ever visited in Houston. This restaurants operates more than 20 years by a Japanese couple. Service is great every time I visited. For the menu they have the normal English menu (of course the safe choices for non-Asian) and a hidden Japanese menu if you ask, where there are all the exciting, authentic items. I tried one day ankimo, which is basically the liver of a deep ocean fish. Almost as delicious as foie gras! Lunch box is very affordable, (<10 dollars) and of the same great quality. Cannot wait the next visit to Nippon! more

Amazing sushi 9/19/2007

Great Sushi @ Great Prices 3/27/2007

I think the one liner subject says it all. Great sushi @ great prices & good service. You can swing by on the weekends in the afternoon or at night during the weekdays/weekends (sit outside if it's pleasant). It's a casual place so you can go as you are (well almost) more

Best sushi in town 1/29/2007

Quaint, unassuming, delicious, and worth it! 12/28/2006

I love Nippon for its down to earth approach. As far as I know, they were the first sushi restaurant to set up shop in Houston. They favor authenticity over flashiness. These days sushi seems to be all about trendy after work hangouts for yuppies, but less than ten years ago it was much more about the kind of close, quiet, pleasant restaurant. Cheers, not Studio 54. If anyone remembers those days and is sick of the overpriced and pretentious feel of the newer places, I highly recommen Nippon! Besides the quiet, comfortable, casual atmosphere, the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, the sushi is good, and the value is excellent. You can actually get a good meal and pay much less than you would expect to at a sushi restaurant. Nippon is one of the best lunch spots around me, I highly recommend stopping by for lunch and getting one of the bento boxes. The non-sushi dishes are very good, and the portions are perfect. Bottom line if you love sushi, Japanese retaurants, and food in general, you can't afford to miss Nippon! Pros: Lunch specials, good food, good value, friendly and competent service. more

A relaxing, enjoyable dining experience. 4/18/2006

My boyfriend and I love coming to Nippon when we can't decide on a restaurant but both feel like Japanese food. It is so much more laid back than other Japanese restaurants- we don't feel strange showing up in jeans and a t shirt. Despite this, the food is always excellent, filling, and authentic. We rarely spend more than $30, even with alcohol, and are always satisfied. Pros: Value, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

One of the Best Eateries in Houston!!! 4/11/2006

Best thing about this restaurant is that the food quality and preparation is always great... Staff is very friendly and Japanese... Beer is cold and sake and green tea are hot... green tea ice cream is wonderful... always meet and make new friends at the sushi bar... relaxed dinning experience... plan a show, 2-3 hour dinning experience... you will feel so very good when you leave... Pros: Food, Staff, Patrons Cons: Parking more

Best Sushi in Houston 11/17/2005

They have the best sushi in Houston. Been going here for years, and everytime we go to another sushi place, we always say ""It's OK, but not as good as Nippon."" My only complaint is it always seems to take a long time to get the bill when we're finished (although this is a common complaint of ours at many restaraunts). If you want to know what to order, here's our favorite order for two: Tamago, Maguro, California Roll, Spider Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Crab and Asparagus Roll w/Mayo, and a shrimp tempura appetizer (comes with a few veggie tempura as well). A large hot sake and large bottle of Sapporo round that all off nicely :) Pros: fresh sushi, great tempura Cons: slow with the check more

SUPER DELICIOUS 9/10/2005

Lived in Japan for a while so believe me their food is just great. Very fresh fish, good quality!!! I deeply recommend their tonkatsu. The price is reasonable and you get with it a salad and a soup. Their fried fish for example, yakii saba is also very original. It taste like in Japan. Service is nice, food is great, prices are good. Go and try it! more

some of the best sushi in town!!! 8/21/2005

incredible rolls, fried veggies were great, too. have the green tea ice cream after an enjoyable meal. service wasn't spectacular and the place was crowded, but the food makes it well worth it! Pros: food Cons: crowded more

Simply the best 9/18/2004

The sashimi is the best you can get in Houston. The maguro and sake melt in your mouth. Pros: food, service (sometimes it is slow) Cons: crowded, parking is tight more

chillinjapan 8/18/2004

This is a nice, unpretentious japanese restorant that relies on pretty decent sushi and not the pictures on the wall. Even though their food is not the best, it is fair for the price you pay. The restorant is clean and most of the staff is japanese. I have always had a nice time when i come here. The place is relaxed. Pros: clean, cozy, genuine more

Delicious 3/3/2003
