Been to Kalga many times and for the most part the food is good. However, I often find that it is over salted and over spiced. Someone in the kitchen has a heavy hand with the sal...

Great little place 7/22/2007

I went here after doing a search for veggie/vegan to eat during my trip to portland, and my fiancee and I braved the drive. We were not let down, this was an extremely cute little place. We loved the decour and the atmosphere. The menu was extremely tempting, and we juggled various dishes, as they all sounded delicious. The food itself was amazing, and very well portioned. The vegan german chocolate cake was was quite delicious Pros: Great service, atmosphere, and food Cons: It was a bit loud more

Kalga Cafe' 7/16/2007

I was invited to try this restaurants while I was visiting from NY and always being eager to try a new place I agreed. I met my beautiful friend Juliette there (food aways tastes better with a charming companion) and we had some of the best drinks I've ever enjoyed. The food was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. Our server recommended a few appetizers to start and since there were plenty of seats available (it was about 8:oo ) we prepared ourselves for a long comfortable dinner. The first course was sooo good that we decided to let our server surprise us noting the few limitations we each had and off she went. What followed was a dinner to fly for - a wide variety of regional dishes served quickly and piping hot. Our server was attentive without hovering and left us to revel in one of the finest meals I've had in ages. The prices were very reasonable, the lighting perfect and the music gently drifting in the background. If you have not yet been -go go now if you have then you know what I'm saying is true. Good food served with care. Kalga does it right thank you. T&J more

Veg food in the SE 7/11/2007

Great Vegetarian options, especially if you have a significant other who is vegetarian but you're not. Decent prices, god music, hearty portions. Let's hope it stays open, it was pretty dead the last 2 times I have been their. more

I have gone to Kalga Kafe and ordered many different items from the menu and each items has always been very tasty. No complaints about the food. The service is good but sometimes is slow so don't be in a hurry to get your food and run because it does seem to take a while at times. I would recommend this place to all my friends and family. Pros: good food Cons: slow at times more

Great variety of ethnic dishes 4/4/2007

We tried this place after reading the good reviews. The set up in there looked more like you were eating in a bar but it's in a long, narrow space so all the tables were along the windows on one side of the room. They offer mediterranean, asian, and indian dishes , along w/ pizza and other things I can't remember. We ordered one of the indian dishes and it was delicious, especially w/ the indian bread. I got my dish mild in spiciness. The prices are about $10. The music was a tad loud and the atmosphere was dark, almost gothic-like. The staff were very friendly and courteous and it was pretty warm in there, which I liked. The samosas looked really good at the next table! The best part was dessert - we had the vegan german choc cake and it was one of the best tasting chocolate cakes I 've had. It really satisfied my craving! I still keep thinking about that cake. The bill overall was reasonable - $35 for 2 entrees, margarita , tequila shot, and dessert. I like this place better than Bay Leaf up the street b/c it has more variety than just asian dishes and it felt a tad more cozy. Will definitely be back again to try their other dishes! Pros: good food, great service Cons: loud music, not a lot of tables more

I LOVE THIS PLACE 3/9/2007

The only bad thing I?ve heard about this place is that it takes a while to get your food, which is sorta true. But I like that. No one rushes you, they have fun drink specials, the food is SO good and because of the variety of types of food its an ideal place to go when one person wants salad, one wants pizza, one wants noodles, one wants Indian? I know I?m not the only person that?s been in that situation. The dishes can be quite spicy, even for me, and I like spicy. The vegan pizza is a dream come true, the ?cheese? taste (get this) good. The miso is also vegan and also very good. The only thing I?ve ever had and been a little disappointed with was the falafel, and that?s just because they were super firm and dense. I guess that?s a personal thing. Oh, and although it only has one money sign I feel its more expensive, worth it though. Pros: Food, Service, Mango smoothie coconut thing Cons: Its not right next to my place. more

Fantastic Pad Thai 1/25/2007

I'm not even a huge Thai fan, but the Pad Thai here still has me thinking about it a week later. Pros: Vegetarian! Parking Cons: $$. Cooked to order, organic, vegetarian is a little pricier. (but very worth it) more

MMM, but more $$ than $ 11/30/2006

'Seems Kalga Kafe has upped their prices, but everything is still worth every dollar (except the drinks are quite steep for my wallet so I usually stick to the tap water even though the chai tea is wonderful). The meal price of ""$"" needs to be changed to ""$$"" I think since all their foods are $10+. Pros: atmosphere, music, the quality of food!, open later than most places Cons: prices are a little much more

I LOVE this place 11/16/2006

Every once and awhile you find a restaurant that has exceptional food and feels so comfortable you could go every day - Kalga is that place! Yes, it can be a little cold in the restaurant, and the servers can be a bit hard to catch now and then, but it is all worth it in the end! Wonderfully diverse menu with many good food choices. The wait staff is efficient and friendly and will provide suggestions on favorites if you ask. They can get busy, but are helpful and knowledgable. Wonderful vegetarian choices make this a favorite again and again. I have never had a bad experience yet! Pros: Food is to die for!!! Cons: Bring a sweater, the dining area can get cold. more

Now I have to eat there today because I am thinking about i 11/6/2006

Really good food! There should be more vegan and vegetarian places in Portland, that's what I was thinking the day I stumbled upon this place. TRY THE SAMOSAS!!! They alone are worth going. Actually everything is realy good. I usually order two dinners so I can eat one the next day or lunch. Pros: samosas Cons: sometimes it's a bit cold- wear a sweater more

Good food 10/29/2006

We went there for dinner for the first time the other night armed with a chinook book coupon. We were impressed with the ambiance, It was dark, good music, warm. The seating is a bit uncomfortable but easily forgivable. The waiters were friendly but very busy and we only saw them a couple of times, so we only ended up with one beer each for the night. We ordered a green curry and an indian dish.. both were excellent. I have never liked tofo before but I ate every speck of my green curry, tofu included. I LOVE the organic food, and that the restaurant is eco-friendly. Over here on the west side we don't have any organic, eco-friendly places to eat so we just cook at home (usually). Pros: Organic foods, eco friendly restaurant, nice atmosphere Cons: need more staff, uncomfortable seating more

A Real Gem 7/8/2006

My husband and I have been going here for years (in fact, he proposed to me the first time we ate there!) and it never gets old. At first glance, you might worry that the menu is the same old mediocre world-vegetarian fare, but in fact all the dishes are prepared truly authentically and are delicious. From the samosa and chole to the falafel to the Pad Thai, you'll find the best examples of many different types of cuisines. Don't miss the Indian dishes or the vegan chocolate mousse. The atmosphere is wonderful--mature and romantic, and the service, while not speedy, is certainly not overly slow and you'll have time to enjoy your food with your dining companions. Great drink menu as well. Pros: great food with lots of variety, atmosphere Cons: a bit pricy (but worth it!) more

Awesome! 7/5/2006

I dropped in here one night when I needed dinner in a hurry. Got an Indian lentil soup that was absolutely spectacular! I like the small dining room and their unique dishware. My dinner was a tad more expensive than I would have liked, but the food was delicious. I will go again! more

Just a fun place to eat 7/2/2006

If you are looking for good vegetarian or organic food from a diverse menu in a fun ecclectic atmosphere - you found it. Also great for those nights when you just don't get around to having dinner until late! Kalga is unique on many levels, but after multiple trips we still have yet to have a bad experience. It can be a little snobbish at times - depending on the clientele - but we love it anyway! Great organic or vegan pizza, indian food and even some italian touches. Great place to feel like you have escaped the ordinary. Pros: Ambience, Food, diverse menu Cons: Maybe parking - although we haven't had a problem yet more

Good vegan food 6/25/2006

Really good vegan food. Samosas are the best thing on the menu, make sure to order some. Actually everything is really good.... The lighting is nice too. Pros: good food, good service Cons: music is too loud more

Delicious Food 3/11/2006

I got there a little after 5 pm, soon after they opened, and I was seated promptly. I ordered a samosa (sp?) with this stew sauce off the appetizer section of the menu. It worked out as a scrumptious light meal for me and I washed it down with the flavorsome vegan fruit smoothie. Unfortunately they were out of the one vegan desert on the menu. The place started filling up fast. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the music was kind of loud. Pros: inexpensive, good service, good vegan food! Cons: loud music more

A good place to eat - lots of veggie options 1/28/2006

I've eaten @ Kalga probably about 10 times since they opened. My experience has been that the food is usually tasty and reasonably priced. I personally don't like how dark it is - but that is a personal preference. I also find that sometimes the music is a bit too loud, so it can be a challenge to have discussions across the table. But if you are vegetarian and you value organic produce, then the place is quite good. Pros: Good food, Good prices, Vegetarian friendly Cons: Loud, Dark more

Nice place 12/11/2005

The Kalga has pretty good food - could use a little bit more flavor, but nice vegetarian and organic - so I have to give it props for that. The staff is about your average Portland servers - slightly too cool for school, but at least they bring you your food and sometimes some witty humor. My biggest complaint is that it is often very cold in there - maybe it's just the way that the door is placed - but they could use some heaters or something Pros: vegetarian, organic Cons: cold more

love it 11/16/2005

I am not a vegetarian but I love well made veggie food. This place is definitely the best in Portland for veggie and vegan. I couldn't believe all the varieties and flavors of all the wonderful food. I never felt like I was missing anything because it was veggie only. I wish I could cook like that. I'll just have to go back more often. The space is really beautiful too. Thanks for a great meal. Pros: beautiful space, good falue, great flavor more
