RUDE! 3/30/2011

My husband took our three children during spring break. The person who talked with them basically told them not to enter any of the buildings. "EVEN IF YOU SEE PEOPLE INSIDE THE BUILDINGS, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GO IN". My daugher loves historical sites like this and it was such a disappointment to have paid full admission and spent an hour each way driving to be completely restricted from visiting this site in the way that kids are supposed to. more

Informative and educative 4/15/2006

Naper settlement makes for an informative and educative children outing. Located in downtown Naperville, this is a demonstration of what Naperville was when it was first settled. They have a lot of houses from the eighteenth century. Many tours and functions and organized by them throughout the year more

Step back in time 1/16/2006

In downtown Naperville, Illinois, a modern and bustling city, there is a small remnant of the original settlement that began the town you now see. Several times a year, there are festivals or recreations of timely events. But, the settlement is open at other times. Visit it often, because even though it's a historical site, things are anything but stagnant. It's a fun place to visit and I guarantee you'll learn something new. more

Naper Settlement 10/7/2005

Naper Settlement is located in downtown Naperville and is a great place to bring the family to get an idea of how things were done in the "old days". The employees there are dressed in colonial costume and you have the opportunity to see things such as a blacksmith at work. They also have a lovely, small chapel that is particularly popular for wedding ceremonies. more

A taste of history 8/17/2005

Located in downtown Naperville, Naper Settlement is the perfect place to take children to learn a history lesson. The village is a replica of Naperville as it was first settled. They have many educational programs and special events throughout the year. You can also enjoy the modern Naperville which is within walking distance. more

Old time settlement 8/10/2005

Naper Settlement is located in Naperville, IL. It looks like an old time fort. Complete with a little church, blacksmith shop, mansion and much more. They have several activities that take place each year such as craft shows and a civil war reenactment. You can still get married in the little church. My daughter was married there five years ago and it was beautiful. Very educational for children and fun for all. more

Neat place to bring the kids 7/30/2005

Naper Settlement is a really interesting place to take the kids on a little local field trip. A lot of interesting little houses and cabins from the 1800s. They are really fun to walk through and the tours are great. Every summer they also have an even called civil war days. People dressed up from that era camp the entire time and you can see how they lived. more

Editorial
  • In Short
There are five private homes within the Naper Settlement (not all are open for viewing) including an 1830s pioneer home and a farm laborer's cottage. Public buildings include the fort, stonecarver's shop, one-room school, post office, firehouse, print shop and blacksmith shop with several public areas to tour. The Pre-Emption House was the first hotel and tavern west of Chicago and now houses the Naper Settlement Visitors Center. The 1864 Century Memorial Chapel can now be rented for weddings and special events.
