Best in Richmond 4/11/2010

I have been desperately looking for decent chinese/Asian food in Richmond. As I'm sure most of you know, it's not easy. There are great Vietnamese/Thai places, but Chinese restaurants are hard to come by. We ordered take out tonight, and gave Nanking a shot. I was totally blown a way. We ordered: 1) Hunan Chicken 2) Tso's Chicken 3) Pork with lemon Grass The food was INCREDIBLE. Truly: I consider the best Chinese restaurants as those having incredibly flavorful sauces, and this place knocked it out of the park. I would highly recommend this place, and I am SO glad I finally found a wonderful Chinese restaurant. By FAR the best Chinese place in the city, bar none. Pros: Great Food Cons: Prices a little high more

Great food, nice people 2/14/2008

I have driven by this restaurant on many occasions and thought about going in, but didn't. One Saturday while in the area my sister and I decided to try it out because all the places we normally go in the area were so busy. I was pleasantly surprised. The food was wonderful, the waitstaff was extremely courteous and pleasant and the prices were not bad at all. I will definitely now make this one of my regular stops when I am in the Broad street area. Kudos Nan King. Pros: Food, ambiance and waitstaff. Cons: None as far as I'm concerned. more

A little pricey for just ok food 2/1/2008

I ordered food for delivery and they took over an hour to deliver it. The bill was high for Chinese food and the food was only so so. more

One of the better Asian Restaurants in town 7/14/2007

Let me just start off saying that all of the items I had at this restaurant looked and tasted very fresh. So, I decided to go to this restaurant through recommendation of a friend. I walked into this restaurant expecting it to be your so-so chinese restaurant, but I was splendidly suprised. The overall atmosphere was homey and welcoming. I started off with an appetizer dish of summer rolls. The roll itself was good, but the sauces used to dip them in were spectacular. One sauce was a thin peanut sauce and another a clear fish sauce. My friend ordered the vietnamese spring rolls. She said she was pleased with this order because the filling in the roll was tasty, but not overburdening. For our entrees, I ordered the fried cracker shrimp while my friend ordered the filet mignon wor bar. Our orders got out pretty quickly. I had never ordered the fried cracker shrimp at any other restaurant and the presentation was beautiful. I delved into the jumbo shrimp just lightly fried with a zest garlic and green onions. My friend's steak was just as beautifully presented and the taste was wonderful. You could tell it was marinated for a long time with garlic, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and a touch of hunan sauce. The sauteed shiitake mushrooms, peas, and sweet onions were a nice complement to the steak as well. We glanced at the myriad of delicacies on the dessert menu, but we were far too full to eat them. The service should also be commended, my waitress was very friendly and helped a great deal in trying to find the right dish to try that night. She got me to go out of my boundaries and try something other than hunan chicken or lo mein. When I left, the hostess made sure to ask if everything was okay. The overall experience was absolutely enjoyable and I plan on returning.\r \r * Most of the entrees are very affordable, (even a large steak was only 17.95) and from what I've seen the portions are rather large, and could easily be split if wanted. Pros: Fresh food! Great Service! and Friendly Atmosphere! Cons: none! more

Bad Food, Unpleasant Wait Staff, Unfair Price 3/16/2007

We were looking forward to dining at Nanking's new location. We used to frequent their old location and loved their food. The building still looked like a rib joint (previous tenant) but we were not worried because their food had been so good in the past. We were pleased to see some Vietnamese dishes on the menu which I really enjoy. We ordered Summer Rolls as an appetizer and while they were tasty, the noodles were hot instead of chilled which I found unusual. I had never had them that way before. That was OK. I ordered the ""Seafood HotPot"" for dinner which was one of their higher priced ""specialties."" It came out flaming and I ooed and awed over it ... until I tasted it. The shrimp, scallops, and squid were the texture of rubber and the ""broth"" tasted like dish water with no detectible seasoning which is not typical for Vietamese food. It was truly the most unappetizing Asian dish I had ever had. I truly couldn't eat and apologized profusely to the waitress when I sent it back. She was visibly annoyed with me and asked me what I wanted instead. I quickly chose Chicken and Snow Peas because I figured it would be prepared well ... I had had it many times before at the old Nanking. Within 5 minutes the manager brought the dish out to me. It was bland but edible. My dining partner's dish was also on the bland side. I would not be writing such a scathing review if they had not charged me the FULL PRICE for the Vietnamese HotPot even though I sent it back in exchange for a much less expensive dish. We will never return. We felt disappointed and cheated at Nanking. more

Great Food 9/22/2006

Today was our first time visiting Nanking and the food was really good and the portions were really large. We realized that we could have split something and been perfectly happy and full because we brought a lot home. We did order a regular lo mein and not small though. The service was a little slow but we didn't mind, the people were friendly, and the atmosphere was quiet. They also have ample parking. If you go to their website then they have a 10% off coupon also that you can print. Pros: food, parking, ambience Cons: slower service more

Excellent Food 8/21/2006

A Indulging Sensation of Chinese Cuisine 4/17/2006

I have visited Nanking Restaurant several times, and I have also visited their new location. The restaurant setting is beautiful. The restaurant used to be Awful Arthurs. It was such a dramatic change from the old Awful Arthurs to Nanking. The staff was very kind and the food was delicious. The prices weren't too high either. Overall, I had an enjoyable dining experience. Pros: staff, food, setting Cons: nothing, nothing, nothing more

Best EVER!!!!!! 8/5/2002

Honestly, I eat at Nanking probably once a week. It is my favorite restaurant. I have tried other chineses places but none come close. Pros: Food, cheap, for lunch, kind staff more
