awfull place for your dog 1/30/2008

I have a Golden Retriever named Mambo who I took to the New York Dog Spa and Hotel on 25th St for about 8 months since he was 5 months old thinking this was a safe place for him to play with another dogs but unfortunately I was DEAD WRONG. After two incidents with my dog at this place where Mr. Jessani, one of the staff members at the New York Dog Spa and Hotel told me that THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, I decided to take my dog out of that place and here a copy of the letter I wrote to them that will give you an idea of what is going on in that place: Mr. Jessani: As you know, this is the second such incident in the past five months and this time the consequences are far more serious: The first time some dog attacked my dog Mambo and he was cut just less than half an inch off his eye, this time you are telling me he got tangled with some other dog and as a result Mambo is disfigured in that he has lost a front incisor tooth and he has been bitten three times. The reason we brought Mambo to the Dog Spa was to avoid exactly these types of incidents. Regardless of what happened (and, truly, it does not matter whether there was some type of fight or bizarre "entanglement" between the two dogs), the people at the Dog Spa are supposed to be the "experts" in reading what the dogs in their groups are doing and to avoid these things before they can occur. I truly suspect no one was watching at the time because had someone been in the room with the dogs, this would have easily been avoided. After two incidents in only five months, there is no more "peace of mind" in leaving Mambo there and we simply cannot trust the Dog Spa. When I arrived I found Mambo with his neck chained against a wall with a rope approximately 18 inches long, where he could not lay down or get comfortable despite the pain he was in. Needless to say, Mambo won't be returning to the Dog Spa. Given the rate of incidents, he would not survive another two years of whatever is happening there. more

Where Some Dogs Live Better than Some People.. 1/12/2006

As part of a photojournalism project on pampered pooches, I briefly stopped in the New York Dog Spa & Hotel to do a bit of research. Though not a place I'd use myself, I could see the attraction it must have for the wealthiest of dog owners. The business itself is essentially a full-service hotel with all the amenities one would expect in one. Rates range from $46 to $52 per night, more if Fido is to participate in classes and treatments. While there man's best friend may be treated to a deep tissue massage, a hot oil treatment or even a pedicure. In other words, he can live it up better than most people do on a daily basis. But if you pup is your only baby why not splurge a little? more

Luxury kennel to the stars 8/21/2005

First, a confession: I don't have a dog. I am qualified to review NY Dog Spa because one of the founders was a former colleague of mine, whom I will refer to semi-anonymously with the initials FC. He is no longer affiliated with NYDS, but in the late 90's I got an earful about the concept and the founding of NYDS. The point of differentiation is how they treat the human owners. By calling it a "spa", FC and his colleagues thought that the pet-obsessed would feel better about relinquishing their 4-footed family members. FC & Co. were right. There is one different, key feature at NYDS - the ON SITE vet. This probably makes no difference if you are dropping off your pet for a brief grooming. But if you plan to board your pet while you are on vacation, or leave her here during the day often for Day Care services, this is key. Most ordinary kennels don't have this. Yes, celebrities really bring their dogs here. In 1998, FC told me that Madonna used to use NYDS. You never know who you'll bump into by the checkout counter. more
