Most of us who grew up in the area went to the MFA throughout school on field trips. It's worth visiting as an adult, whether your tastes are classical or modern. You can relax with the imposing Asian statues, get a little freaked out at the Greco-Roman statues with missing body parts, and react on some gut level to the modern art. The basement cafe is where you go for cheaper food and less crowded bathrooms (in the hall). Free Wednesday nights after 4-ish, go early if you can so you're not wading through crowds of sketching, starving art students. Note: you still have to pay for special exhibits, even if you get in free.
