Mrs. White's serves up the best soul food - not just in Arizona, but anywhere. This hole-in-the-wall in downtown Phoenix is a well-kept secret. Local celebrities stop in to say "hi" to Larry, the owner, and sign their names on the walls and ceilings.
Featuring fried pork chops, smothered chicken and chicken fried steak, the menu is simple. So simple, in fact, that until recently it was simply written on the wall with marker. They often run out of popular items, so it's best to go with a backup choice in mind.
Entrees come with a choice of two vegetables such as yams, black-eyed peas, cabbage or green beans cooked with new potatoes. There are no salads and everything is seasoned with bacon grease, so vegetarians and dieters can forget about it.
Granted, the building is a dump. The restaurant has been there since the 1960's and probably has never been remodeled. However, the food will make you forget all that.
Unfortunately, Mrs. White's is only open for weekday lunches. It's $8.80 for a huge plate of food, and they don't take credit cards. Come with cash and come hungry.
