Worst thing since my first migraine!!! 5/28/2010

Went to this place late on a weeknight, since there was still people there and it had been recommended by someone who used to go there a few years ago when they lived in the area. People at the door were really welcoming, and the atmosphere and presentation was authentic. So.. the Meso soup tasted a bit too salty, but I was way too hungry to care. When my Sushi Deluxe came, I was surprised I had still not finished my soup...(that was quick!) so far not bad... then a horrible smell hit me from the plate. I thought it might be the soy sauce, or anything else but the sushi. Took a closer look, and things were not alarming at first but rather unusual. Then noticed the Nigiri Sushis looked rather dry, and the rice would fall off the soft crab Gunkan Maki (the only thing that was descent ). Smelled and tasted the salmon. Although did not smell too much, it was as chewy as ika (squid). Had the squid or octopus, or I think that's what it was, because from the smell and texture it was unlike anything else in the past, and not in a good way either. Then realized where the smell was coming from, the tuna? Yes of course, where was the color, the redness!?! Smelled the other one, and the rolls, same thing. It was so bad, I could only try a role, to find out how bad it really was. By any means I am not a picky eater, but literally I could not touch the rest of it. Tried to have the shrimp, and that too, was so bad and old, I could not even force it down and had to take it out of my mouth. YES the shrimp, which is always your safest bet. Conclusion? Mentioned to them not one thing was fresh, and it was like they had FORGOTTEN HOW to speak English all of the sudden... Mind you I was going to pay for the meal, so not looking for a free one, but they could not even offer a sorry or a sign of disappointment/remorse. Paid 19 bucks including tip and walked out, with the majority not even touched. For all I know, they will give that to the next guy, which is probably what happened to me! I don't know how the rest of the menu is and they may be okay. But avoid the sushi at this place. You can expect the sushi to make you as sick as my stomach felt for hours after and the whole 9 yards. Definitely one of the worst sushi places in Boston area. Go to Kayuga... I have frequently been there every month over the past 8.5 years, not once did I have this type of experience. Basically put: your local supermarket sushi will be better than Mr. Sushi's. Pros: Decore Cons: Service & Quality more

i used to come here all the time but not anymore. the food is so inconsistent and not to mention, the service is nothing to rave about. last time i ordered kalbi, it was dry. the sushi wasn't so fresh either. nowadays, i just go further down harvard ave for great korean & more exotic choices. hint, check out korea garden -- so much yummier. Cons: bad service & boring menu more

Crave sushi in the brookline area? 2/9/2010

Mr. Sushi in Coolidge Corner is located right next to Zaftigs, they serve Korean and Japanese food. When I'm craving either Udon Noodles or a hot bowl of Bi Bim Bab, Mr. Sushi is my first choice in the Brookline area. They are a bit expensive but the quality of their ingredients really makes it worth while, also they have great service and they are super fast in getting your food out. It's a great place to gather with a large group of friends too, they've got the space without making you feel cramped. Their sushi selection is pretty standard, but again it's the quality of their ingredients that makes their sashimi just that much better than any other sushi place in the area. Pros: Great BimbimBop more

great casual cheap sushi 10/11/2007

I decided on this place for my sushi loving/picky eater friend and we both loved it. Very casual- walk in in what ever attire and get low priced great eats- we loved our plate of sushi and got it for $40. very friendly staff and fine timing service. more

great sushi! 7/10/2007

I got around to going to mr. sushi with a friend after years of going to the same 2 places in the fenway area and I was really pleasantly impressed. The quality of the raw fish was incredible and the price of the whole dinner was much cheaper than I would have expected. Service was good but is definitely the weakest of all factors at mr. sushi. I am planning on going back and trying the house 'cooked' specialties as well next time and I have the feeling it was also be a very good meal! Pros: great fish, key location, great value more

GREAT SUSHI! 11/13/2006

The fish is always fresh, and the service is great. The sushi chef is always willing to make adjustments to the rolls to make me happy - no tobiko, change to shrimp etc. The non-sushi dishes are great also! Pros: Great, Fresh Sushi Cons: on-street parking only, other than that - it's a great place! more

Meh 8/8/2006

I've ordered delivery from Mr Sushi and it's decent sushi at decent prices. Sometimes they've messed up the order, but it's usually about things like salad, or rolls, or missing sets of chopsticks that I am unconcerned about anyways. If they messed up my sushi order though, there'd be h*** to pay! In any case, I found Mr Sushi unexciting. Not great, but not expensive either. Good if you're jonesing for some sushi but if you're looking for quality, go elsewhere. Pros: inexpensive Cons: you get what you pay for more

shocking treatment of patrons with babies 3/10/2006

my infant son and i met two friends and their babies for lunch today at MR. SUSHI in brookline. just after we ordered, the restaurant owner came to our table and told us not to return to the restaurant. he claimed he had lost a customer because of us. it was just after 12:00 noon when were were there, the resaurant was full to about 15% of capacity and our babies were quiet and content making just the occasional sound of baby joy (not that that should matter so long as there was room to seat us, but to give you added perspective on the owner's hostility to patrons with babies). needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere from now on. we hope other parents and their babies are spared such crass discriminatory treatment in the future. Pros: lost of space Cons: hate babies more

A Brookline Gem 9/30/2005

Mr. Sushi is often overshadowed by its trendier Japanese counterpart, Fugakyu. However, this restaurant is a true gem! It offers excellent value and great food. Also, I have never had any problems with the service. My girlfriend and I are regulars there and would recommend going for their lunch boxes which offer a nice variety at great prices. While Fugakyu is excellent, Mr. Sushi offers better value for the everyday sushi lover. Pros: Price, Easy Parking, Good Food Cons: Background music more

PLEASE READ 5/24/2005

My girlfriend and I come here consistently and not without reason. We're college students. And we love to eat sushi. For us, Mr. Sushi was a great find. The service we've experienced have always been good on all the occasions we've gone there to eat. The one male waiter is especially attentive. The spicy seafood soup was hot and very filling. The sushi always tastes fresh and satisfies our cravings. And this desert is just perfect: Green Bean Ice Cream with Red Bean topping. GET THIS! It's incredible! Every single time, even when we order excessive amounts of food, the bill always surprises us because it's cheap. Parking is not so difficult to find, and the atmosphere is casual and quiet, and the lights are a little dim, and the decorations are not too tacky. It's a great place to dine. We've never had to make reservations. Pros: inexpensive, delicious, comfortable Cons: parking may be a hard more

Poor Service 6/22/2004

I experienced a new level of bad service at Mr. Sushi. My party of 4 and I arrived on Wednesday night I asked how long the wait would be "I don't know" with quite a serving of attitude was the answer. 15 minutes later my friends and I were seated. Some of us wanted sake, the others wine so we ordered individual glasses. The wine was sour and while it is not our habit we asked the waitress for something else after barely taking a sip. The waitress shook her head at our request, rolled her eyes, made quite a scene and asked "you want to CANCEL the order?" After we suggested sake instead she shook her head, let out a big sign and said "OK" in a fairly condescending tone. Our presence was clearly an imposition for her so we left and went to Takeshima, where they were delightful. Pros: easy to get into Cons: , Service is horrible more

Delivery Is Disgraceful 3/14/2004

We have ordered in from Mr. Sushi on several occassions. They are perpetually late and this time it took them an hour and a half to get the food to our apartment. (you can walk there in 15 minutes). The always forget the salad unless you specifically ask for it though it's included with the main dish. Go there for the food but FORGET ORDERING IN! Pros: cheap food, ok quality more

Yichk 1/5/2004

Flavorless fish, not very fresh, tastes like it's been frozen. Watery, flavorless miso. I think this must be prison food in Japan. The only fish-related stuff that's palatable here is heavily doctored with spicy mayo and other flavor-masking ingredients in rolls. Don't eat the sushi or sashimi. Cons: bad food, old plum wine, really bad music. more

Terrible service 10/4/2003

Me and my acquaintances frequently order food for delivery from many boston restaurants. We especially enjoy japanese and thai cuisine. I have ordered from Mr. Sushi at least ten times. They have delivered old edamame, salads with no dressing, the wrong rolls, etc. The last time we tried to place an order we were told that they do not deliver to our location (7 min. away by car). Even after I mentioned our frequent orders to their establishment, they stood firm on their denial. It goes without saying, we are not ordering from them again. The quality and service of other japanese/asian restaurants in the area are well worth the money! Pros: cheap Cons: service, quality, freshness more

great Brookline sushi 8/26/2002

Great value; impeccable fish. Though neigborhood restaurants like Fugakyu may have superior presentation, it comes at a substantially higher price. more

Exquisite taste, everyday price 7/23/2002

A friend and I reward ourselves for going to the gym with lunch at Mr. Sushi on a regular basis. The food is delicious, quickly served and cheap - you just can't beat it. Pros: Inexpensive, Fast Service, Freshly made Cons: Hard to find parking, Limited Seating more

Priced to please 5/14/2002

We love Mr. Sushi for the high-grade fish priced low enough that we can eat here any night of the week. It's not cheap, but it is affordable. We like that. For a variety, order the sushi boat to share. more

  • The Scene
A favorite among the hordes of students and young professionals that call the Coolidge Corner area home, Mr. Sushi has enjoyed lines out the door since its opening in 1987. True aficionados know that better-quality sushi can be found elsewhere (down the street at Fugakyu, for one), but the affordable prices and breadth of menu items here can't be beat. Service depends on the time of visit; on busy weekend nights, expect to wait for that extra side of wasabi.

    The Food
The dinner menu's 100-plus items are split fairly evenly between familiar favorites (steamed shrimp dumplings, lightly battered vegetable tempura) and rare Japanese delicacies (boiled baby octopus, quail eggs). Most diners opt for fresh California rolls and satisfying chicken teriyaki. Entrees, which include several Korean specialties like Bi Bim Bab, come with smoky miso soup and a simple garden salad. Tangy ginger ice cream provides a palate-pleasing finish.
