Whether a social experiment or examining science with a wink, the MIT Museum is a great place to visit. The exhibit on the electric cars is an interesting theory on how a city's d...

Small, but very interesting 8/28/2005

The MIT Museum is small (about 1 hour to see everything), but fascinating. This museum has the world's largest collection of holograms, and many are on permanent display. Other exhibits include Rube Goldberg type contraptions and amazing stop-action photography (by the pioneer of that approach.) There is an area for children to play and color, though many of the exhibits are too exposed for small children. (You'll be running after them the whole time.) more

Great Place! 8/26/2005

If you are into robotics and/or holograms you will have a great time here! I believe students get in for as low as $2, so either way, it is worth it. It’s amazing what these students have done. There are also many still images of weird things like, a bullet going through an apple, or a football being kicked. It’s very very interesting and worth the trip to Cambridge. Also, it’s in a great location near Kendall Square (and many others also.) more

Coolest museum ever! 8/18/2005

Who knew MIT had a museum? Not only that, it is probably the coolest museum you'll ever visit. They've archived some of the neatest inventions from MIT over the year so you can see all the cool gadgets over the years. My personal favorites are the works of Harold Edgerton, best known for his electronic stroboscope and the famous pictures of a bullet going through an apple or a drop of milk forming a coronet. If you haven't been here, you really should consider going! more

Intriguing and thorough 8/17/2005

The focus of the MIT Museum isn't the school. It's the products of MIT: research, discovery, and good clean science. This is why it's a successful museum and a fun place to visit. They rotate their exhibits, so every visit usually brings something novel to think about. The best part of this museum's collections is that they showcase innovation but they also encourage it. As a viewer, I was compelled to wonder "could I have made this in a better way?" This is what they're trying to accomplish, and it often works. The museum's main gallery, on Mass Ave, is not huge. It's good for a few hours' visit. Don't plan your day around it, but make sure to see the MIT campus too (great for sightseeing) or other things in Cambridge or Boston. Admission is free with an MIT ID, and you can take one guest for free too. Otherwise expect to pay a little, but not a lot (and nothing at all on the third Sunday of each month). more

  • On a recent visit to Cambridge's other university, we were pleasantly reminded of the simplicity and unpretentious nature of its museum. There are no Rembrandts and Mondrians here. The MIT...
