The Scene
Tip Sheet
There are a number of lots complete with boat ramps in the day-use area.
The Madeira County side of the river is full of campsites while the Fresno County side is for day use only. Off-site lodging is available in the city of Fresno through Reserve America (800-444-7275), 20 miles southwest of the park.
Sunbathers will find a beach area on the day-use side of the lake. Millerton Lake was carved out of the San Joaquin River when the Army Corps of Engineers built Friant Dam. 8,000 acres of state parkland bring out campers, anglers, and hikers in equal numbers. 138 campsites make overnight stays possible on the grounds, with 30 of them offering boat hookups for water-skiers. Hiking and equestrian trails are all around the lake, with the park's calm roads welcoming joggers and cyclists. From December to February, endangered bald eagles "winter" in the park.
When to Go
Spring and summer activities on the lake, such as fishing and waterskiing, are plentiful, as are dry land activities like camping and hiking. Fishing, swimming, and boating are available every weekend, weather permitting.
What to Bring
If you're the camping type, tenting supplies are in order. Make sure your shoes fit your turf. Even with the lake's 1,500 elevation, temperatures can rise to 100 degrees. Visitors should bring plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Barbara E. Hernandez
