Worst

There's really nothing terribly wrong with Michael's, but nothing stood out. Aging decor, plastic seats on the patio. I do not pretend to be a gourmet, but I do know when I'm dini...

Amazing service, food and ambience ... at a price 8/14/2006

I'd heard about this spot - just a half a block down from the Promenade across Wilshire - but never made a point to visit. Absolute gem, with a tree-filled patio and impeccable service. Menu was tasty meats and seafoods. But, expect to pay $30-ish per entree. more

Worst Dining Experience Ever 5/20/2006

cpq Provided by Partner
We had a dinner party for 15 people for my wife's birthday. It was the worst restaurant experience I've had in my entire life. Service - terrible! They made us feel like they were doing us a favor by throwing us some dinner rolls every 1/2 hour. Food - even worse. I ordered the 'Honey Pork' not 'Hockey Puck'. Three different orders were sent back. Steaks undercooked and cold. Pork hard as a rock. The waiter was arrogant and condescending and couldn't have cared less about how poorly things were going. With all of the fantastic restaurants in this city, nobody needs to put up with this crap, especially at those prices ! Pros: Nice Back Patio Cons: Expensive, Terrible Service, Mediocre Food more

Expensive but worth it. 9/26/2005

Michael's has been on my ""to eat"" list for a while. It was definitely worth it!! Yes, the place is like walking into a time capsule from the 80's, but it has it's own bungalow-esque type of charm. Not to mention, the enthusiastic owner, Michael walking around meeting and greeting. The oysters were delicious, the heirloom tomatoes were FABULOUS, the salmon was yummy, and the rack of lamb was good. I'd recommend calling ahead and requesting the patio seating. i would definitely come back. the hostess had an attitude, but everyone else was amazing. Pros: food, romantic Cons: expensive, stuck up hostess more

Nice, but don't go there hungry! 7/8/2005

Went for my hubby's birthday and sat outside- overall romantic atmosphere and attentative service. The food was excellent in taste, but portions were extremely small. We started with an appetizer, a few martinis and then entrees; however, we were both still hungry when we left (even after finishing 2 desserts). My husband had the rack of lamb (which was pricey) and this must of been the world's smallest lamb! Only 4 or 5 bones with very little meat on them. Next time we'll stop at Fatburger beforehand. My only additional comment, I agree about another reviewer mentioning the plastic lawn chairs. Also, a lot of the umbrellas had giant scorch marks on them where the heating lamps had been too close. In fact, one was so bad it looked like it had been on fire at one point. For being fine dining (and expensive) the furniture is a little tacky. Pros: delicious food Cons: small portions, tacky furniture more

Celebration Ruined 6/13/2005

We went there to celebrate my 30th Birthday and were quite dissappointed with the overall experience. Dinner took over three hours and the service was non-existent. The food was bland and cold. Pros: Atmoshphere Cons: Service, Food, Valet more

Too bad 6/12/2005

After hearing rave reviews we were expecting a fabu experience. Not so. Don't get why people love the patio so much. Uncomfortable lawn chairs - portable heaters blowing on the tables. If it's cold enough for a heater perched near your table - maybe they should offer the large & empty dining room. The food was good, but not worth suffering the service. Pros: decent food more

Amazing Resturant, Amazing Chef 3/14/2005

It is only a few times in life when you eat food so good that you ask to see the menu and write down the name of the chef. This restaurant was exactly that. Chef Nadav Bashan is a culinary genius, carefully crafting this gourmet ecstasy perfectly matched with wine. Chef Bashan is on my star chef-to-watch list, and you better get in there before he runs off to France to earn his Michelin stars! Pros: culinary experience more

Great fine dining in 45 minutes??? Yes! 2/22/2005

jeanyz Provided by Partner
My story - I had to leave dinner at 7pm to make it in time for the theater...being usually tardy, I arrived at Michael's at 6:15pm. Not being a stranger to 2-3 hour fine dining experiences, I was naturally a bit concerned. However, I informed the Michael's staff and they got us out of there in 45 minutes flat, still with the same wonderful service and food. I'm a little embarrassed to say I also asked if they would get gas for me as I was practically on fumes and in a TREMENDOUS rush. How horrible of me to ask, but I was desperate. I can't believe they actually considered it - but they only had one valet at the time, and it was Saturday night. Great food as usual...beautiful garden setting...but more deserved is praise for their dedication to providing great service to even their slightly crazed customers! Pros: Great Service, Great Food, Valet more

Nice place if you don't look at the menu 2/21/2005

I was a bit turned off by the presence of some of the cruelest foods imaginable: foie gras and veal. The appetite quickly disappears when you think about where this stuff came from. more

Amazing 2/6/2003

Everything about this restaurant is nothing short of excellent. The service was friendly and helpful. I recommend the seared foie gras for appetizers. Be forewarned: it's a pricey night out, but you should never use that as an excuse to keep yourself from the best food. Pros: Extensive wine list, Great atmosphere Cons: Not cheap,, but the best never is more
