Editorial review from Citysearch 2/15/2013

I like it! Simple place, not much in the way of decoration and only a few seats, but the food is top-notch. My favorite is the Rachel. If you like deli sandwiches you won't be disappointed by this place... keep in mind they only take cash. more

Mostly not jerks? 9/20/2011

A bunch of the reviews here focus on how rude the service is, which is totally counter to my experience. I'm not the most decisive person in the world, so I dawdle a little at the counter whenever I go. The guy at the register has only ever smiled and helped me decide. He may just feel paternal/avuncular, but I've never seen him yell or grumble at anyone. It must vary, but this is not a small gathering of buttholes. I go in pretty often for the mango chicken salad- it is delicious. A couple years ago I got a tiny bit of tendon or something, but it hasn't happened since. Otherwise, I've only really tried the knishes, and they are delicious but a bit greasy. more

TREATED LIKE TRASH 9/6/2010

This was the WORST experience. We'll never go again and will warn everyone else not to go there either. My husband ordered the food ""to go"" and then our young kids changed their mind and wanted to eat there. Michael came out and yelled at us for eating there and stated there was a different price for eating there or ordering ""to go."" When my husband apologized and offered to pay the difference, Michael just ranted on and said, ""No, that's why I asked you TWICE."" After that, we felt so unwelcome that my elderly mother said we should just leave. We certainly didn't deserve to be treated that way, especially since we apologized and offered to pay the mystical ""different price."" He must enjoy forcing a family with young kids and a disabled mom out of his restaurant because he was was not the least bit remorseful. I'll never take my family or friends there EVER again. more

Bad food and bad service 9/27/2009

Went in for lunch with my wife and teenage son. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and they both ordered corned beef. The pastrami was ok but nothing special. My wife's corned beef was 90% fat with little edible and no flavor. She brought it to the attention of the counter person who called over Michael, the owner. He told her corned beef is fatty and it was just to bad and he would not do anything about it. My son's was mostly meat with very little fat. My wife pointed this out to Michael and he just walked away and said shut up lady, a comment overheard by other patrons. Cons: Poor quality, Bad attitude more

Cheap... SOB 7/3/2008

I am done.. with this joint..! I bought a sandwich and use my Credit Card, he marks the order so that the guys in the back give you less portions than if you use cash..! And he slammed my credit card on the table. If wanted to be abused, I would pay for it..at Durgins Park. No food is that good to be cheated..! Pros: close to my job Cons: SOB more

Best Deli on East Coast 5/11/2008

This is by far the best Deli I've ever seen. Over the years I've tried everything on their menu - their tongue sandwich is unbelievable, worth going back every week! Michaels has the most tender meats I've ever tasted, and their prices are more than reasonable. I used to go to Katz's in New York (Kat's is twice as expensive and comes nowhere near Michaels), and I also tried several other places in Boston, including Zaftigs. They make their own russian dressing with real pickles, and they buy their meats fresh every day. Pros: Meats and Service Cons: rather small more

Great Fresh Food!! 5/24/2007

Michael takes such pride in all of the food he prepares, and it shows. All of the ingredients are so fresh, and the quality is consistent from one dish to the next. Michael is ""The Corned Beef King"" and he deserves the title. I took my friend to eat there with me, and she told me that she hates corned beef. I made her try it and she loved it!! A can't miss! And Michael is such a great guy, he keeps you coming back time and time again. :) more

Quality & value. 3/17/2007

If you want a delicious deli sandwich with all the trimmings, pickles, potato salad, this is the place to go. Quick, friendly service but you're left alone to take your time & enjoy while you eat. The quality is excellent and it is very affordable. Go with an appetite or someone to share with. Very clean as well. Pros: Quality food Cons: None that I can think of. more

Awful 7/16/2006

Never had fattier or more tasteless corned beef sandwich. The owner asked if everything was ok. I told him like it was. He suggested next time order the lean corned beef. I left over half of my sandwich, and went down the street and got a real sandwich. He should have offered something. He didn't. Cons: lots more

SECRET FIND 5/28/2004

THIS PLACE HAS SOME HOMEADE STUFF THAT WILL BLOW YUR MIND COMPARED TO OTHER SO CALLED DELIS.SOUPS,MEATS,DELI CASE STUFF IS NEW YORK STYLE GOOD ITS NOT REALLY A FULL SERVICE RESTARUANT BUT WORTH A VISIT OR TWO OR THREE. THEY HAVE GIVEN OUT SAMPLES AND HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL. OLD FASHIONED FLAVOR AND STYLE IS HARD TOO FIND. THIS PLACE IS A CLASSIC AND CONVENIENT. Pros: GOOD QUALITY, BETTER THAN OTHERS, KNOW THIER STUFF Cons: , NO BEER more

Real Deal Deli 11/10/2003

Why anyone would waste money and time on Zaftigs with Michael's all of 3 blocks away boggles my mind. If you're looking for a Jewish Deli, go to Michael's. If you're looking for a scene, go to Zaftigs. Pros: Top notch meats, fair prices, laid back environment Cons: too few seats more
