Good basic restaurant 4/8/2006

Michael's is a good basic restaurant with I guess an American menu, or maybe just a little of everything. Their burger platters are very good and other dishes we tried were perfectly good. Nothing is really out of the ordinary, though. The ambience is nice though the location on a really busy block of York Road isn't exactly lovely. There is a lot of parking in the back. The service was good and prices are reasonable for a nice dinner out. It's a good place for people who aren't adventurous eaters. more

Great Seafood Is a Given, But Amazing Desserts Too!! 8/5/2005

Michael's seafood is some of the best in town. Normally when I go there I get their crab cake which is truly spectacular, full with jumbo lump crabmeat. On this trip I decided to be different and try a special. I tried the seared red snapper served with jumbo lump crabmeat, sundried tomatoes, spinach, and artichoke, all served over a bed of rice. Delicioso!!! Red snapper has a very meaty texture and a reallly fishy taste, but needed a little more salt, which was alleviated by the sundried tomatoes and artichokes. What I was really impressed with was the ample amount of crabmeat they added on top of the meal, and they were huge lumps--I was very satisfied and quickly gobbled those up. My friend got the seafood platter with one crabcake, some shrimp and scallops and some roughy. I really liked the roughy, definitely a softer texture and less intense flavor than the snapper, but it paired really well with the meal. The scallops needed something else--perhaps more salt or butter? And of course the crabcake and shrimp were yummy. But now I must talk about the delicious dessert we both got. For the amount of times I've been here, I'm surprised I've never looked at their dessert menu. Sadly enough they weren't serving creme brulee which is often a dessert I like to have, but I chose a chocolate-y dessert called the Blackout cake. SUPERB. Hands down one of the best chocolate cakes I've ever had. First of all it was the biggest slice of cake I've ever seen, and secondly there were all these different layers and types of chocolate. The main part of the cake was a chocolate mousse, and the cake itself was very moist and rich. Absolutely delicious, I was crazily pleased. My friend got a cake that was basically a huge cookie in a pie crust with some vanilla ice cream on the side--how can you go wrong? All in all, this long time establishment doesn't shock me in their marvelous seafood cooking, but the definite pleasant surprise is their dessert is quite up to par! more
