Beware of Family Dental !!!\r
\r
At best, Family Dental misdiagnosed me. At worst, they lied to me. This is outrageous for anyone in the medical profession. I wish someone would investigate them. Family Dental is basically a giant dental mill that works on volume. They seem to try and sell patients on crowns (instead of a standard filling) or they try to sell you on more costly periodontal maintenance every three months (instead of a basic cleaning twice a year). In my case, they said I needed both. Family Dental said I needed a crown and periodontal maintenance.\r
\r
I questioned this so I decided to see another dentist and get another opinion, but I didn't tell the new dentist everything that Family Dental had recommended. The second opinion dentist and dental hygienist then gave me a phenomenal cleaning. Probably the best cleaning I've ever received. The dental hygienist actually spent 1 1/2 hours cleaning my teeth. They told me this was standard procedure for any new first time patient. In contrast, the dental hygienist at Family Dental spent approximately 20 minutes measuring the plaque on my teeth, but she didn't really clean it. She scraped my teeth a bit, but she was mostly taking measurements of my plaque and simply writing the figures down. I couldn't believe it.\r
\r
Let me also say that I really take care of my teeth. I diligently brush and floss thoroughly. So when Family Dental said I needed periodontal maintenance and a crown, my gut feeling was that something was very wrong at Family Dental.\r
\r
As mentioned, my second opinion dentist ended up being very thorough, and he told me that I definitely didn't need periodontal maintenance. The older filling that Family Dental wanted to replace with a crown was also fully intact. In other words, I did not need a crown. I then told the second opinion dentist what Family Dental had told me, and the second opinion dentist said he was not surprised. He took another look and confirmed that the filling was fine. He then went on to say that he'd treated other patients from Family Dental that came in with problems caused by Family Dental. This seems corroborated by other negative reviews on this page.\r
\r
In short, Family Dental seems very big on expensive crowns when a standard filling is all you need. According to what I've heard (and see on this page), Family Dental doesn't always do very good work. In my case, the second opinion dentist confirmed what my original dentist told me (before I ever went to Family Dental). My retired dentist said my fillings were intact. He told me my gums and teeth were healthy. ""Keep up the good work,"" he'd always say about my flossing.\r
\r
So stay away from Family Dental, but if you have to use Family Dental, question what they tell you. If they want to put in a crown, get a second opinion. And if they want to put you on a quarterly periodontal maintenance schedule (every three months, which is more expensive than regular dental cleanings) question this too. Did you ever need periodontal maintenance before? Why would you suddenly need this at Family Dental?\r
\r
Who wants unnecessary dental work?\r
\r
Once again, Family Dental said I needed an $800.00 crown when my filling was still intact. They also told me I needed periodontal maintenance when my gums and teeth were healthy. I'm angry, because I almost believed Family Dental. I almost didn't get a second opinion, but I'm glad I did.\r
\r
So, beware of Family Dental.\r
