Authentic Mexican Food 12/7/2010

Best authentic mexican food in Anchorage. It is not tex mex. The food is delicious and different and very reasonable. We love this place and go all the time. As for the complaints about the chips, ask them! If they knew I am sure they try to make you happy. They are wonderful people running a family restaurant. more

Don't go!!! 10/10/2009

After trying other local Mexican in Anchorage, my wife and I thought we'd try MIA after hearing interesting reviews. Our impression: interesting in the very worst sense of the word. Stale chips. Terrible drink. $18.50 for a small entree!!! For that kind of money, a customer should expect gourmet food, not a pile of shredded iceberg lettuce on top of poorly cooked and a tasteless spoonful of chicken, complimented by a soggy tortilla. Complete waste of money. Cons: Bad food, way overpriced. more

Disappointing & Not Worth Going to 10/1/2009

I read that this restaurant was rated (on their website) one of the top 50 Mexican restaurants in the US. What an outlandish statement! What a joke! The moment my family and I walked into the nearly empty restaurant we were met with loud, yelling, unprofessional, employees. Bussers yelling, cooks yelling; a truly terrible atmosphere. One older, male, busser actually came into the bathroom while my daughter and I were in there! My husband and I ordered Sangrias that didn't even taste like wine or have fruit in them. The food was greasy, sweet, and overly salted. I would never go back and regret spending a dime in such a trash pit. Cons: Loud workers, gross food, male busser came into ladies room more

The worst Mexican restaurant in Alaska 2/27/2009

This restaurant has gone downhill lately. It is extremely poor! Pros: poor service...close it down Cons: awful resaturant...close it down more

Very unusual! 2/14/2008

I had never had Joaxacan (spelling?) food before dining here and was pleasantly surprised! We stopped because it was in the area we were out and about in and when I didn't recognize anything on the menu I was concerned. It only took the one visit to be hooked on their special tacos and we made many visits after that just for those! I miss them! more

Could have been so much better! 6/18/2006

As the previous review says, this is definately not Tex-Mex food. The food itself is actually quite tasty. The server asked my wife if she would like to sample the mole sauce that comes on the enchilada, and then the server brought an entire enchilada out, just for us to sample (for free). The portions on the meal were huge. However, the restaurant itself feels quite old, the chips were cold, the service was unattentive at best. You can tell the rest of Anchorage feels how we did, in that we were there on a Friday night, and the restaurant was mostly empty of customers. A little more attention on the front of the restaurant would go a long ways. Pros: Great food Cons: Old building, unattentive service, cold chips more

Definitely not Tex Mex! 8/27/2005

As their menu proudly states - ""we do not serve Mexican American food."" They serve Mexican food, which comes as a shock to people who think crunchy tacos and ground beef enchiladas smothered in chili gravy is the real deal. I love good TexMex, but this is a whole different cuisine. Very fresh, great variety, true regional specialties. Good service, and the ladies who own it watch over everything with eagle eyes. Try the Sunday evening buffet, and expose yourself to many great delights - mole poblano, wonderful vegetable dishes, delicious soups - things you may have never imagined in Mexican food. Extensive menu, and a comprehensive vegetarian menu as well. If you are a lover of true world cuisine, don't miss Mexico in Alaska. Pros: authentic, unique, surprising Cons: parking, accessibility more
