Editorial review from Citysearch 2/7/2013

I think Mekong is the best Thai restaurant in Salt Lake. The portions are large and the price is right, but the food is what makes it so amazing. My sister loves the crab fried rice and everytime she comes in from out of town she has to make a stop here. I was wanting Thai food the other day so stopped in and got take out. The food has the perfect amount of flavoring, I feel as though I could drink the sauces that were in my dishes. I got the yellow curry with shrimp instead of chicken, it was delicious. I was very impressed. I can not wait to go back again and try some of the other dishes. Of course I got the crab fried rice, I was very surprised, I got crab with every bite. The service was very friendly as well and the restaurant is very cute inside. The take out was great but I think I will eat there next time. Delicious! more

My favoret Thai in town 7/31/2009

I tried Mekong Cafe shortly after returning from a trip to Bangkok and of all the Thai restaurants in town I don't think any come as close to what the food is actually like in Thailand except for Mekong Cafe. The only significant difference from Thai food in Thailand and what you get at Mekong cafe is you get about 5 times the portion size. I love to order my dishes authentic! Pros: Order it authentic! Cons: Can get very busy more

Its just OK, overpriced, and overrated! 7/29/2008

I'd seen ME KONG & I was curious. I absolutely LOVE Thai food, I read the reviews haralding praise of ""the best Thai in town"", so I had to try it. But when I had lunch at Me Kong, I couldn't understand what everyone is raving about. I ordered the yellow curry lunch special ($7.95) and I thought it was just ok. The review below who said the curry is heavy on the flavor of coconut milk is right on! That flavor completely overpowers the other spices in the curry, which should meld together in notes. Another issue I had with this dish is that the chicken thighs (which were not cleaned of tendons or fat to my liking) were simply cut up & cooked with no spices (they should have used the similar spices used in the curry to blend the flavors), and thrown into the curry sauce to serve my order. A curry should taste like its been stewed. Pros: nice ambience, nice server Cons: food is just ok, and expensive more

Best Thai food around 4/3/2008

I've been to several Thai and Chinese restaurants and this one is mine and my wife's favorite place. The green curry chicken and green curry pork are absolutely fantastic. Also, their lunch menu is a great price. Sometimes the speed of service is a little slow, but it is more than made up by the great food. more

Absolutely the best Thai food in the state that I have tried, bar none. 2/21/2008

I have traveled extensively in Asia and absolutely love to eat Asian food. I have been coming to Mekong Thai nearly once a week for the last year and a half. I am absolutely addicted to it. I usually have the #3 (Green Curry with Pork) or the #4 (Green Curry with Chicken) on the lunch menu. If you enjoy spicy food, the Medium is rather spicy, the hot is even more so, and I have not yet dared try Authentic. I also very much enjoy the #5 on the lunch menu (Panang Beef). They also have a very excellent Thom Yon Goon(sp) soup. The dish I am dying to try is the red curry on Salmon. They also have a few Chinese dishes on the menu that they do very well. I have had better rice elsewhere, and the pad thai that comes with the lunch combo could also improve, but the curry is so sinfully good it is very easy to overlook the other items flaws. The spring roll that comes with the lunch combo is also quite good and the sweet/sour sauce is delicious that you put it in to. I have eaten at Bangkok Thai, East/West Connection, Thai Ginger Wild Spice, Highnote Cafe, etc, etc, and none can come even close to matching this restaurant. The waitress (coowner?) is very friendly and has an infectious laugh. If I don't get to go to Mekong Thai throughout the course of a week I literally feel like I have lost a small part of me. Walking out of the restaurant with a stomach full of the delicious curry is an experience I return to again and again. Pros: EXCELLENT food. Do not let the outside of the building fool you. EAT here. Cons: Small location, but not normally a problem unless it is during the peak of lunchtime. more

: ) 2/13/2008

I'm not an expert on Thai food. I've been to two or three other restaurants aside from Mekong and enjoyed them, but this one takes the cake, or rather, takes the mango with sweet sticky rice. I went with my husband on a weekday afternoon, but it was still rather busy. The seating was prompt, and so was the serving. The restaurant is charming, with what I would think to be authentic decorations and colorful walls. We shared spring rolls, that came with a very good sweet and sour stuff, not the La Choy stuff that most places serve. We also had two Thai Iced Coffees, they're very sweet, and come in wine glasses, a nice presentation, I thought. We also had some sticky rice and the Vegetarian Platter, which was EXCELLENT! Not too spicy, but with plenty of flavor! If I recall correctly, and I may not, this was about four months ago and I'm dying to go back, most items on the menu can be served in four degrees of spicy: Mild, Medium, Hot and Authentic, which gave me a laugh. It was a great experience and we left very satisfied. The food is quite reasonably priced, but we gave a twelve dollar tip to each the waitress and the cook. It had been so long since we'd left a restaurant with no regrets. If you're in the area, or even if you're not it's one of the best places to go. Pros: nice lighting, prompt seating, GREAT food, courteous servers, Cons: It's busy... but that didn't effect service or food more

Just so-so for me 8/15/2006

I know I'm going against the grain here, since I have only been to this restaurant once, but I wasn't thrilled with it. In fact, having been to DOZENS of Thai restaurants (mostly local, some of which are amazing) and having just spent two weeks in Bangkok, Thailand, I would have to rate this restaurant as towards the bottom in that category. My family is a restaurant going, food eating family. We have been everywhere, including ALL the top restaurants (of all categories) and most of the mid level restaurants in the area. We are well traveled (inside and outside the US) and experienced. Not ONE member of my family has requested a return visit to this restaurant, yet we visit so many others (including other local Thai restaurants) over and over. Pros: Easy to get to, in Central/South Salt Lake Cons: The food was disappointing to me. more

Don't Go! ;) 12/22/2005

Please don't go to this restaurant! It's the best Thai food I've found since moving here from CA two years ago. Too many people are finding out about this hidden gem and we want to keep it All to Ourselves. If you absolutely must try it.... keep the secret! Don't spread the word! more

Yummy 1/2/2005

Wonderful, Yummy Thai Food. As a Californian coming from the Bay Area I had my sights set pretty low, but this is fantastic food! Pros: Taste, Value, Quality more

I love this place! 8/16/2004

This place is great! I haven't found another restaurant that serves as good authentic thai food than that of the Mekong! It's a great place to go if you're looking to try something new, and the prices are pretty moderate as well. Being a family owned business you can get to know them pretty well too. The service was exceptionally good for only two people running the place at lunchtime, and four at dinner ( the kids are out of school by then). If you're looking for good food without having to dress up much. than this is the place to go!! more

rnsnake 7/8/2004

We use to frequent this place a lot. But the past two times, the service was non existent. We waited 25 minutes just to get a menu. And that was at lunch. Would rather go to Thai Delight for better service and better food. more

Overall Exceptional 5/19/2004

I have been going to Mekong Cafe for about 10 years now and it still continues to exceed my expectations. It is a small family run restaurant that serves authentic dishes. If you want exceptional curry, try their yellow curry chicken with sticky rice. Mekong is one of the few places that the food is always better than you remembered. You have to try it to believe it. Pros: Amazing Food, Inexpensive, Fast Service more

Great Thai 10/14/2003

This is an excellent Thai restaurant. True it does not have a wine list -- those are usually reserved for ""fancier restaurants."" But if you want great Thai food, you will be sorry if you miss this one. I'm thinking the rating I read must be from a competitor because it is certainly not an honest rating of this restaurant. If you want some bells & whistles and some streamers hanging from the ceiling, this isn't your place. This is more of a small family run restaurant which is why the food is so authentic and great. It is no more greasy than any other Chinese, Thai, Japanese restaurant I have been to and I myself don't like grease much, but I love this restaurant. Pros: great food, casual atmosphere, food kids will like Cons: interior decorating more

great 9/24/2002

It was excellent. Much better than Bangkok Thai. Mekong's food tastes like REAL thai food. more

Best Thai in town 8/10/2002

I know the appellation ""Best Thai in Town"" Normally goes to Bangkok Thai, but I think it's wrong - Mekong Cafe is better. Pricewise I think this is about half what you pay elsewhere, the food is better. Try the Kra Prow and the Panang Beef Curry, the Tom Gha Kai is fantastic! The only problem is that kids don't like spicy food and so you may not be able to be adventurous on their very extensive menu if you have small ones with you. Pros: Great Food, Affordable, Easy to Find more
