Medical Center For Birds

Dr. Speer is the best and the rest of the staff here is really great. After having my bird over-diagnosed at a bird hospital here in the city and faced with deciding whether or not to go forward with expensive, stressful tests I sought a second opinion from Dr. Speer. I am so thankful that I did because it ended up that there was nothing wrong with my bird except that she needed to lose a few grams. This hospital takes a holistic approach that includes a heavy emphasis on behavioral / social approaches to bird care. And if something is really wrong with your bird, they have all the latest technology on hand to help deal with the problem. This is a ""birds only"" practice- no rats, lizards, guinea pigs, dogs, or cats- and they know their stuff. Totally worth the drive for me from San Francisco, because I love my pet! I first visited this hospital when I brought an injured pigeon to the hospital. I'd brought animals to the Lindsay Museum before, and it is always unsatisfying there. The Medical Center for Birds does charity work for injured birds. They ask you to make a donation if you can. They obviously cared about even a lowly pigeon and I was very happy to leave it in their care. I later brought in an injured hawk, and frankly, I was a little afraid to get too close to its talons and fierce beak. The vet handled the bird expertly and they took good care of it. \r \r Now that I have my cockatiel, it's good to have a vet that has expertise with birds. People bring their birds into the hospital in their normal cages, so the birds are calm. The staff is very nice. It is conveniently located on Main Street in Oakley, but parking can be a little tight. more
