I have no problem with the $20 cover to attend the St. Patrick’s Day celebration at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck. A quality venue with outstanding music, entertainment, food, and beer ...

Yowza!!!!!!!!!!!!! 7/21/2002

I would like to say that as an employee of the Mucky Duck, I am PROUD to work here. I have worked here for almost three years and our establishment still amazes me! We have a cozy atmosphere and enjoy the people who frequent our pub and encourage their return. I have spent a while reading all the reviews our pub. There have been a few negative comments and I am sorry to see that they did not enjoy their time at the Duck. They should give it another go, we are worth it! Pros: The waitstaff is FAB, the food is GREAT, The Music is the BEST Cons: it can be crowded, but it's because we, are popular! more

Yummy Duck 7/18/2002

I find it impossible to decide which is better, the incredible steak and kidney pie or the the beef guinness. Both are so delicious and well presented. The beef guinness has a sweet flavor, I can't put my finger on it, but I think that there must be a hint of sugar in that guinness stew. The steak and kidney pie might just possibly be considered an acquired taste, my husband and I love it, yet our kids want to move to another table when we are eating it...go figure! My favorite dessert is the bread pudding with Irish whiskey sauce, it is just loaded with cinnamon and raisins--what comfort food!! We love the Duck. Saturday lunch time is our favorite time to go, more quiet than other times. Pros: very family oriented, delicious food, comfortable more

Fabulous Place 7/18/2002

I've been a Mucky Duck customer for years. The food is fabulous. Service is also always been just fine. If you have any problems ask for Hillary. She's my personal favorite. The music is awesome and presented in an intimate environment. They have smoke free performances which really appeals to me. Try their lunches and happy hour specials. Great choice for any occassion. Pros: Great Food, Great Entertainment, Great Service more

Richard Thompson--need I say more? 7/2/2002

Richard Thompson at the Mucky Duck...it was fantastic! The sound was incredible. The man himself was as close as being in my own living room! What a show! I don't have the words to describe the night. Too good to be true. I've seen a lot of cool music there, but Richard Thompson was the highpoint for me. It really just won't get any better than this. Pros: really great food, unbelievable wines, the best music more

Duck the Service Sucks 6/30/2002

The atmosphere is great, the ale is fine, the entertainment is awsome, but the service sucks. The wait staff is rude and slow. Cocky is a good word. Even the Owner/Mgr. has an attitude. Not what you would think for a friendly Celtic bar. If the bar was in Ireland, the wait staff would be thrown out of the country for unfriendliness. Pros: good entertainment, good food, good atmosphere Cons: expensive, no good parking, sevice sucks more

The Duck 6/29/2002

Sign up for the email calendar. Pros: Guinness Stout!!!!!, Yummy food treats Cons: runs out of parking, staff attentiveness more

Fresh music, ales and ciders! 6/25/2002

The Duck brings great music to town and keeps admission cost reasonable. Leo Kottke, for instance, played at the Duck this spring and was tremendous. Why? Aside from the fact that he's just an awesome guitarist, it's because every seat in the house is within 30 feet of the stage. I saw Kottke play in a vast auditorium in West Palm Beach the month before his appearance at the Duck, and at that Florida venue, he was just a speck in the distance. Pros: Smoke-free shows, Fresh ales, Interesting food Cons: Crowded, Must buy tix in perso, no room to dance more

Muck about the Duck 6/25/2002

The artists they have are great, almost without fail. The atmosphere is great b/c audience is there for the music. I feel perfectly comfortable going alone. Cons: service more

TOM & CAROL YAUDAS Pros: entertainment, lighting, sound Cons: parking, space more

Absolutely the best!! 6/24/2002

The Mucky Duck is the best place ever! The music is great, but beyond that, everyone is friendly and makes you feel so welcome! I discovered it when I first moved to Houston and found it a comfortable, safe, warm place to go. Now I go all the time. The greatest thing is that for every show they seat you with folks that they think you will enjoy. So if you are coming single, you need never ever feel awkward or out of place. It is just exceptional!! Pros: Great music, Warm, friendly, safe, Inexpensive Cons: food could be better, no mixed drinks more

Excellent 6/24/2002

Great music, service and food. I have always had a great time at the Duck. more

Eclectic evenings 6/24/2002

I have never had a bad evening at the Duck. The musical acts are top-notch and getting better. Where else can you hear the Scottish Rogues and bluesman Chris Smither? The increasing number of smoke-free shows is a big plus. K. Williamson Pros: Bargain, Great music, Intimate venue Cons: Vanishing waitstaff, Uncomfortable chairs more

unkycarl'scurmuginousquotes 6/24/2002

Been goin' to the Duck for many years and before that the Red Lion. The atmosphere is friendly the music is good for whatever ails you and the Guiness, well say no more! more

Better food than Britain 6/24/2002

Lots of British pub favorites on the menu but the food tastes better than what you get on the other side of the pond. And a beer list that any British pub would be proud of! Pros: excellent menu, excellent live music, casual waitstaff Cons: limited parking, casual waitstaff more

tcsmythe 6/24/2002

The Duck has been and always will be the holy grail for singer/songwriters in Texas. Whether you are the Friday featured act, or performing at your first open mic, the sound quality will make you want to hear yourself sing. Couldn't do better if I were in the shower!! Pros: acts, sound, atmosphere Cons: parking, expensive more

Classic 6/24/2002

Nights spent at the Duck are some of my favorite. It is classic entertainment, food, drink and folk. I recommend the Duck to any and all. The Duck is my pick for best bar in Houston. Pros: entertainment, attentive, enthusiastic Cons: parking, bartender, smoke more

Quiet, Please! 6/24/2002

I love the Duck. I like the beer, the food, and, most of all, I like the music that one can hear there. My only complaint is that there are invariably people in the audience who insist on talking loudly during performances. Folks who obviously have no interest in the music. Rusty (or the staff) should be more proactive in asking those who do not wish to hear the music to take their conversations outside. Pros: Great music, Good food and drink, Great service Cons: noisy audience, crowded seating more

Great Local Talent! 6/24/2002

frequent often to see local talent - as well as singers, songwriters, and bands that are travelling through; really like the early non-smoking shows when available. Pros: great beer on tap, excellent bookings, friendly staff more

Good Duck 6/24/2002

You will hear music unavailable on the air except on KPFT. The Duck is a friendly, clean, and wholesome place to hear great live music, and 8:00 p.m. shows are non-smoking. more
