  • Founded in 1974, Maui Academy of performing Arts (MAPA) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to bringing educational and preforming arts programs to the people of Hawaii. Our community productions offer what no digital form of entertainment can ever match: the magic of live theatre. Our Academy dance classes and performances build strength, grace and self confidence in hundreds of Maui's keiki. Offering something for students at all skill levels and across a wide range of styles, you're sure to find classes that will engage and excite your child. each school year, our school partnership residency programsr each over 45,000 Hawaii schoolchildren statewide. The Voices programs uses the performing arts in the classroom to enhance literacy and reading comprehension skills while MAPA's educational Theatre Tours bring professional theatre directly into schools enabling kids to esperience live theare, many for the first time. Our community productions offer what no digital form of entertainment can ever match:the magic of live theatre. Over the years, MAPA has staged more than 500 performances at venues throughout Maui. MAPA's Academy Programs offer after school and Saturday morning dance,drama and music classes for students ages 3 to adult in all levels of ballet,jazz,tap,hip hop,contemporary and drama. MAPA's classes have an average teacher/student ratio of 1:10 and class prices range from $275 to $325 for the semester. Ranging in length from 45 minutes to 2 hours,dance,drama and music classes are held at MAPA's studio building in Wailuku with additional offerings at our satellite location on Maui's West Side. MAPA's Voice program teachers literacy skills through drama to over 4,000 elementary school students on Maui each school year. Through eight week residencies,students improve their reading comprehension skills while learning the foundations of drama. Professional teaching artists collaborate with the classroom teachers so that each drama lesson is directly linked to classroom curriculum. MAPA's Educational Theatre Tours have been bringing high-quality professional productions to pre-schools,elementary schools and middle schools statewide for over 30 years. Each school year,nearly 40,000 students engage their imaginations and explore their world through the wonder of theatre. Many of these students will experience live theatre for the first time when MAPA's professional actors bring the show to their schools. After 35 years and nearly 500 productions,MAPA is proud of its place in the Maui community and the many places it has been. From the original Pu'unene Clubhouse to hotel ballrooms around the island,from the Castle Theater stage to under the stars at the Maui Tropical Plantation,from the Kahului Community Center to our current home at Steppingstone Playhouse,MAPA's plays,musicals and dance productions have brought together people from the full spectrum of Maui as actors,artists,production staff and audiences.
