Best

This place is a piece of MN history. Great little neighborhood bar. The menu couldn't be simpler, and everything on it is worth trying. Pros: All of it Cons: Not the world...

Worst

Jucy Lucy, anyone? 2/10/2011

A friend and I flew to Minneapolis a couple weekends back and we had heard that Matt's Bar served a Jucy Lucy burger. So we took a taxi to this place and it was really crowded. It was a Friday afternoon and the place was packed like most places would be on a Saturday night. We stood in a crowded line, waiting for a table to open up. I told my friend that this burger had better be worth the wait...and let me tell you, it is. The Jucy Lucy was unlike any other burger I've ever had. The cheese is inside the patty, and I didn't understand that at first (I know, Google is my friend, lol). When the nice waitress delivered our food she said to be careful as the cheese was very hot. I looked under the bun and did not see any cheese so I was bewildered. I then took a bite and had hot cheese gush onto my fingers. Luckily, there wasn't much cheese in the first bite...otherwise I would have burned my tongue. I wasn't sure how big the burger was going to be so I had only ordered one. I wish I had ordered two of them, as it's not a big burger, and it's not small either. The fries were quite good too. My friend also thought the burger was excellent, though was kind of put off by the bar-like atmosphere. If I'm ever in Minneapolis again, I would definitely come here again and wolf down a couple more Jucy Lucys. more

Love the Imperfections 12/31/2008

I rue the day that I found out how close Matt's is to my house. Yes, the decor is hideous, my roommate's have made a pretty good guess at the calories in a Jucy Lucy, and I have come home with blisters on my hands from overzealous cheese-eating. I don't care! The staff are great, the beer is cheap, and a sandwich like this doesn't need to be dressed up with a bunch of condiments. more

Matts Bar 3/28/2006

Matts Bar is your "bar next door". It is located in South Minneapolis. Yeah, the decor needed to be updated in the 70's..but hey, they offer the famous "Juicy Lucy" hamburger. This is the hamburger that has melted cheese inside. If you don't wait for 3-5 minutes upon getting the burger, you WILL burn the roof of your mouth. The wait is worth it; it's a greasy treat. Don't make the mistake of asking for pickles or tomatoes..they don't have 'em. It's a no frills bar, but the burger and fries are good. more

Juicy Lucy's! 8/17/2005

This hole-in-the-wall beer joint is the home of the Jucy Lucy - the BEST cheeseburger int he world! Take 2 quarter pounders, put hot, melted cheese in the middle, and you've got the best burger ever. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired, and the bathrooms are frankly kind of scary, but the foods definately worth it! If you can get past the dim atmosphere, you're really in for a treat. more

best jucy lucys! 6/26/2005

matts bar is wonderful, especially since it's smoke free now! they have the most delicious jucy lucy's around... their service is fast, and they offer mini-pints of beer for those with low alcohol tolerance too! not a great place for veggies (especially since your veggie sandwich is grilled right next to the meat), but there are options (limited). nice wait staff, typical bar scene, but great neighborhood bar. looks grungy on the outside, but worth the jucy lucy. more
