The best sushi ever 11/15/2007

I have had sushi from at least a hundred places on the west coast. The sushi that I have had at Matsu is so good that I won't have sushi anywhere else. The quality and freshness of the fish is bar none. The chefs at the bar are professional, helpful and full of personality. Most nights the sushi bar is packed for the "first seating". Getting there before opening is almost a must to put in your name.....Yes, it's that good! Many nights the second seating is just as full. I'm sure the Matsu regulars will kill me for giving out this information. It's not uncommon to see the same faces at the sushi bar every week to get their "fix" of sushi. This isn't your average sushi bar. The owner is very attentive to the needs of his customers and that dedication is reflected in the service you receive from the staff. A friend of mine told me about it, stating "it's the best sushi you have ever had". I thought "yeah, right!". Now I swear by it. If you really love sushi and sashimi. I will bet the world you will find that this is some of the best available anywhere. P.S. Try the "California Taco" handroll (crab, spicy tuna, masago, avacado and some radish sprout wrapped in soy paper....."soooo good!) Leroy more

Matsu Japanese Restaurant 10/28/2007

"My wife and I stumbled upon this restaurant when a family friend asked if we want to meet with her in this great Japanese restaurant in Huntington Beach. When we arrived around 7, the parking at the plaza was horrible. Virtually there were no space available. I had to park the car around the corner. Once we stepped into the restaurant, our friend wanted to sit at the sushi bar, however the wait on a Thursday night at the sushi bar was 1 and 1/2 hours. Therefore, we just sat at the first available table instead. When we ordered, our friend instructed the waitress to ask the chief at the sushi bar to prepare our rolls instead. She indicated that there is a big difference in quality if you do not specified that. The first dish that cam was the beef teppan. The beef teppan that we had was so-so. We definitely had better. Even my friend who is a frequent quest at this restaurant was surprised by the quality of the teppan beef. She indicated that the beef should have been very tender, but since our order was not great, I can not comment. After teppan, we had spider roll, cucumber roll, Caterpillar roll, toro, one night stand (this is not on the menu item, and is actually a name of a roll), yellow tail bowl (or ball, not sure), and (salt) eel roll. The sushi were not bad. One night stand has a smoked avocado to provide the crunchiness. The yellow tail bowl (ball) has raw quail egg with masago on top. The salt eel was smoke to perfection with a slight hint of sweet taste to it. Overall I think the quality of food was okay. Service is not bad as well, but nothing really stood out versus other typical Japanese restaurants in S. Cal. The most memorable dish of the night, I will probably had to say was the eel roll. I am usually not a big eel person, but the eel roll at this place really had changed my mind." more

I wish I lived in Huntington Beach! 7/26/2006

We spend a few days every summer in Huntington Beach, for the U.S. Open of Surfing event. Matsu is by far our favorite HB restaurant, so relaxing and welcoming in atmosphere. The sushi presentation is beautiful, and the pina coladas are the best. The cozy booths are our favorite place just to sit and relax after a long day in the sun. Highly recommended. more

Very good sushi 9/14/2005

Sushi here is very good. It tastes very fresh, although the slices could be a little thicker. They are very authentic in their seating and music. I enjoy the atmosphere. This is a place you can go with a few friends, or go with for a business meeting, or even a date. The miso soup is very good, as well as their teriyaki chicken. Try this place, you have to look in the corner of the shopping mart and the sign is very large. more

fresh and clean for sushi 8/24/2005

Matsu is a cute and clean place to go for good quality sushi. I have only eaten at tables...no comments about the sushi bar. The servers are always really nice, and the whole place has a lot of atmosphere. It sort of seems like it should be fancy, but people are not very formal when they go there. They have most of the standard japanese/americanized fare, including cooked food which is also very good. The boats are really huge and feed way more people than they say. The servers are pretty good about helping you figure out what is appropriate if you are looking for a boat-sized meal. Somehow this place just has a nice vibe for me. more
