Academic and community arts groups maintain non-profit art galleries throughout Richmond. VCU's Anderson Gallery is bigger, but the Marsh Art Gallery at University of Richmond's Modlin Center is also a treasure. Director Richard Waller has overseen the Marsh's remarkable evolution over the past decade. For an unusual perspective, visit the Lora Robins Gallery of Designs from Nature while you are on campus. Artspace, an artist-run co-op, began in Shockoe Slip in 1988 to foster interest in new and intellectually challenging work. The Elegba Folklore Society celebrates African-American arts and crafts as well as dances and other creative activities, holding a Down Home Family Reunion and a Kwanzaa celebration every year. The Hand Workshop has been giving classes and promoting local art since 1963. Also a Richmond tradition, the 1708 Gallery no longer resides at 1708 Main Street but continues its 20-year tradition of support for the arts at its new location.
