We hired Mark Hunter Construction to renovate our 3.5 bathrooms. Although Mark’s subcontractors were generally good, and timely, Mark himself was not. For example: \r
1) Mark resisted entering into a written contract with us until we said we wouldn’t pay him until an agreement was signed; \r
2) Mark refused to comply with several contract terms (even though the contract was provided by MHC, not us) – for example, the contract required MCH’s invoices to include a list of the work actually performed and for which we were being billed, but Mark repeatedly sent us bills for flat $10k ‘progress payments’ that didn’t describe the completed work, and Mark got very angry when we asked him to provide the details;\r
3) When Mark refused to provide the details for his second invoice, and we insisted on it, he sent us an email saying that he quit and that he had notified his subcontractors not to perform any further work, effective immediately. Not only was quitting in violation of his contract, but it was unprofessional. He also left a voicemail containing multiple expletives and refusing to allow any further work;\r
4) We subsequently discovered that MHC’s contract doesn’t include many of the terms that are required by the California Business and Professions Code for contracts for home improvement projects;\r
5) The California Business and Professions Code specifically states that a down payment may not exceed $1k or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. Mark argued that this term doesn’t apply to MHC (although he never explained why not), and kept insisting on a $10k down payment (which we refused to pay in advance);\r
6) Although MHC’s contract said that payments for services were due 15 days after we received a detailed invoice, Mark always demanded immediate payment (i.e., the next day). As we believed Mark would quit (again) if we didn't meet his demands, we always paid immediately;\r
7) Our designer discussed the renovation requirements with Mark room by room. However, Mark failed to communicate to his demolition team that we were keeping 1 toilet and 2 mirrors, so they destroyed them. MHC failed to take any responsibility for this, and refused to bear the cost of the new toilet and mirrors despite the fact that the contract said MHC would protect us against all damages resulting from its employees’ acts. \r
Overall, MCH and Mark were unprofessional. I would not recommend them to anyone.\r
