Mexican in Webster 2/20/2007

Maria’s Mexican Restaurant 75 West Main Street Webster, NY 14580 585.872.1237 Tucked away under a church is a tiny little restaurant called Maria’s. The space is more inviting that it sounds. While I heard rave reviews from my co-workers, I have read a lot of condemning reviews online. It was time to find out if this was a Mexican restaurant worth returning to! We were promptly greeted with a friendly smile. Obviously my coworkers were regulars since the server let them know their regular booth was available. Since it was lunch, all but one decided to pass on alcoholic beverages. I tasted a bit of the margarita ($6.25) and think I would need to have a full glass to get the full effect. It had a very strong lime taste to it which I am not sure I would like. And as a general rule, I dig lime. Chips and salsa were brought to the table before our order was taken. The chips were thicker than usual but I found them quite tasty. The salsa could have been hotter, but it still had a good flavor to it. I ordered the Combo Enchilada Dinner ($8.95). Along with the usual rice and beans, came three stuffed enchilada’s. The shredded beef enchilada was a bit dry, but I thoroughly enjoyed the cheese and chicken enchiladas. One of my dining companions ordered the appetizer Hole Mole ($7.95) as the meal. 20 or so tortilla chips with melted cheese, served with guacamole. This guacamole was one of the best I have tasted in a restaurant. Creamy yet chunky guacamole with just the right amount of tomatoes and chips drowning in cheese made this an excellent lunch. Another dining companion ordered off the al la carte menu. A bean and cheese burrito ($3.15) and guacamole tostada ($3.25) left this person quite full. A cheese stuffed jalapeno ($1.00) was also quite good with a kick, although I noticed the cheese was only half melted. The last dining companion ordered a Sincronisada ($3.00) and a jalapeno ($1.00). While the jalapeno was enjoyed, the Sincronisada was pretty awful. It looked like an undercooked omelet dotted with cooked ham. The taste was quite bland, even though the description sounded excellent. Overall, I wouldn’t mind a return trip. I wouldn’t go as far to agree with the online reports of being horrible; however I wasn’t completely won over. Visit Eat Out Rochester: eatoutrochester.blogspot.com more
