THIS IS THE BEST RESTAURANT IN CHAPEL HILL!!! The people there are so awsome, they always remember us when we go, its like from the show ""Cheers,"" where everbody knows your name. Its part of going home. Now that they are closing, we will have to resort to going and buying olive oil just to go in. Mariakakis is an awsome restaurant, and despite what anyone else says, it is great. Pros: ITS SOOOO GOOOOD THERE ARE NO WORDS!!! more

Stopped by last week for a little lunch. Had a Reuben that took for ever to get. after eating it wish I was still waiting . Person at the counter was half asleep and there was some guy running around yelling at everyone ( the owner I assume ) I feel for him, but its a very unpleasant atmosphere. the food in the case looks old and everything could use a good dusting ( wine bottles ). Disappointed. That's all I can say... but I'll say more! After returning to live in the Chapel Hill area, I anticipated my first meal at one of my old favs, Mariakakis. Sadly, selling imports and wine seems to be the draw for this former great eatery. I ordered a chicken on pita, hummus on the side. I must say, the portions were great... but the chicken was greasy, bland and not good. The hummus was served in a pint container with one cut up piece of pita. I looked forward to taking the rest home until I tasted it. I make much better at home... that goes for the hummus, chicken and eggplant parm my wife had. Sad to see such a staple go the way of the dinosaur... farewell old friend, give me a call and I'll share my recipe for crowd drawing hummus with you... for a price!
