Love This Place...Interesting and Exotic 1/17/2009

What a great experience. We went with another couple the first time and loved it. We started with the Island Jewels. It's hard to tell exactly what flavors you're experiencing, sweet, smokey...and just delicious! We also had the beef empanadas...also yummy. I had the steak sandwich with some kind of creamy sauce served on the side. I would highly recommend this. Everything we ordered was outstanding and the service was equally good. The chef even made an appearance and introduced himself. The owner was there and spent several minutes with us. The restrauant was beautiful, complete with the music with a Cuban flare. My husband said that there was even a flat screen tv in the men's room. We finished the evening on the outside patio enjoying the passers by with a fine cigar and an after dinner drink Wonderful food, reasonably priced and classy. We will definately return. BTW...our friends have already been back and raved about it as well. I wondered if I should tell you all or not, as I'd like to get a table without a long wait next time. Pros: Excellent food, service and ambience Cons: parking! more

Excellent Date Restaurant 9/3/2008

So my and my buddy decided to bring our girlfriends out to the Gaslamp on Saturday night to get something to eat. We were pining for something different than pizza or chinese food, so when we saw the sign for Carribean food, we thought we would give it a shot. We were happy that we had done so. The greeter was very polite and welcoming, and seated us immediately. The ambiance of the place was modern and upscale, but the prices were very reasonable considering that we were in the Gaslamp quarter. Our waiter was quick, polite, and very personalbe. I think that his name was Lawrence or something. Anyway, we ordered the Island Jewels, the Cuban Sandwich, and two orders of empanadas. Everything was very delicious. We also were able to enjoy the music of the place while we were drinking, and after we were fed, we were ready to go out dancing after. All in all, we had a great time and definitely plan on coming back again soon. Pros: Delicious food, Friendly Service Cons: Both Bars Not Open more

Service was horrible and the rib eye was overcooked , chewey, and dry 8/8/2008

It took over 45 minutes to get our order. I actually believe they forgot about it. My friend and I each ordered the rib eye medium-rare. It came out not only fully cooked, but over cooked. Never did they ask how we were doing and how everything was. The place was not even half full, so there was no excuse for their horrible service. I do NOT recommend this place to anyone. I never do these online reviews, but this is the only way I could make up for the worst $50 experience of my life. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Caribbean-inspired restaurant combines the flavors of the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Cuba in the Gaslamp.

Editorial
  • In Short
Cigar lounge appeal goes up in smoke with the debut of chic-Caribbean fusion restaurant, Mangu. With mahogany tables, white leather seats and Ostrich leather booth seating, the hip interior is equally exotic as the menu. It's two experiences in one space, so you can linger at the bar with a cigar or head back to the restaurant and enjoy one of Executive Chef David Santiago's specialty empanadas. The Mahi-Mahi is encrusted in curry-spiced masa, while the mango and cheese variety sweet, fruit salsa with savory jerk spices. Another crowd favorite, the Cuban sandwich (rumored the best outside of Miami), consists of slow roasted, garlic infused pork layered with ham, pickles, swiss, pressed to toasty perfection alongside mojo sauce.
