Never again for me 6/9/2011

Used to love the fried chicken here. Four years ago you got three juicy pieces, two great sides and lemonade for under $11. Last night I paid $13.60 for ttwo dry pieces of chicken and one decent, one cold side and no drink for $13.60, plus the place is falling apart. They're coasting on the hipsters who don't know any better. Haven't these people heard of competition? more

good stuff 3/27/2007

I live in the neighborhood and we've been coming here for a couple of years now. The food and service is very homey and we love it. I have to say though, I another place opened up a few blocks away called ""Birdies"". Small spot that specializes in Southern Style Chicken. It's named after the grandmother of one of the owner's, cute. What I like about it is that it also caters to vegetarians, many of our friends are. We now have two great Southern style comfort food spots in the neighborhood, mamas & grandma Birdie's! Cool! Pros: good food Cons: busy more

best customer service ever 10/16/2006

went here to dine friday nite and was surprsied to see the way the staff treated their customers. I fel like they really wanted me to be there. Not to mention the food suggestions made were perfect. Pros: food, customer service more

good confort food 8/18/2006

Mamas is good for fried chicken or a veggie plate-big portions and no frills (yet cozy/warm) seating. Service is fast and attentive. Not crazy about the mashed potatoes though-it always seems too salty. Otherwise, everthing has always been yummy. A great place to get your soul food fix. Pros: Big portions, great service/staff Cons: salty mashed potatoes more

Don't recommend delivery 6/13/2006

Maybe it's better in the restaurant - I've never been - but the delivery is kinda crummy. Lukewarm, greasy food and vegetables sit in a pool of oily water that leaks through the bag. I won't order again. more

Good Food, But Cold Food 12/6/2005

I've been searching for a place to get good southern, comfort food. I came upon the reviews through Citysearch and was extremely excited about going to Mama's due to the 9.2 rating. I went into the buffet style ordering counter, got my plate and was surprised when I bit into a cold plate of chicken and sweet potato. I did however LOVE the Mac and Cheese, because lets be honest, you can't eat Mac & Cheese Cold. Maybe it was the cold weather outside that was drifting into the restaurant as the food is right by the door, but no one should have to eat a cold dinner. Pros: HOT mac & cheese Cons: COLD Food more

great food, huge portions 2/21/2004

The food here is excellent and portions are huge. Not many people can finish an entree with 2 sides. Pros: Excellent food, large portions, low prices more

Great for Tae Out! 8/5/2003

I order Mama's in at least once a week! The portions are large, the salmon is the best I've had in the area (very plain but- gasp!- not dry at all), and you can't beat the price. $9 gets you two huge sides and a great big hunk of whatever meat you want. I think of it this way- I usually pay $13 on average for a piece of salmon half that size. The long list of sides includes great favorites (like mac n' cheese or mashed potatoes) and some new ones with a twist (broccoli with whole pieces of roasted garlic or cous cous). I typically opt to get delivery just because I'd rather eat it in my apartment rather than the actual restaurant, but either way, you're paying the same- tip the waiter or tip the delivery guy! And either Pros: large portions, VERY flavorful Cons: small eating area more

If you don't mind being 3/25/2003

treated like garbage, then try Mama's. The baked chicken and mashed potatoes are really good, but the service stank. For my hard-earned cash I am going to find someplace else where I can at least be treated well. I won't get into name calling, but you will see what kind of staff they have when you get there. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend Mama's for a first date. Only for a good friend who you like to try new things (no uptight people). Also, most of the food isn't really southern, but just regular homecooked food. I mean couscous isn't southern at all!!! Pros: good food, very comfortable Cons: chaotic service more

BEST MEATLOAF! 2/3/2003

Mama's has the most delicious meatloaf and mashed potatoes. These are a definite must try. The sweet peas are also garlicky and yummy. The salmon tends to run out early. This place is so cheap and worth it. You get whopping big portions. Sit outside in nice weather in old school desks, it's too cramped inside. Pros: mashed potatoes Cons: cramped seating more

community microwave..ewww 1/22/2003

Yeah, the food is cheap, but the whole heat it up in the microwave thing, freaked me out. Too low budget for me. If you want good cheap grub, go to any cuchifrito in the city, or hit up the outer boroughs for some decent comfort food, where the space is clean and sanitary. Plus, the food was just OK..nothing spectacular. Pros: cheap Cons: cold food, dingy more

It could be really good but... 12/28/2002

The food is tasty, especially the mac n'cheese. However, each item is mass-prepared and sits out without being heated (which I personally find disgusting), so your food is likely to come cold or luke-warm at best. There is a microwave available, but who wants to go out to a restaurant where they have to microwave their own food?! Pros: it tastes homeade, cheap Cons: food is COLD more

Really good 12/11/2002

The food is really tasty especially the smash potatoes. They serve a lot in case you have a good apetite. more

I love my Mama's! 11/15/2002

I feel the need to respond to the negative reviews about Mama's. First of all, Mama's is not a soul food joint; just a place that serves rich, tasty, well-seasoned, home-style food. And the reason the food is cold is because you're supposed to heat it up yourself! Keep your eye out for the microwave. The decor is great and includes random portraits of Mama's of all shapes, sizes and colors and homey mismatached tables and chairs. So don't listen to those nasty reviews, give Mama's a try and see for yourself. Pros: cute decor, good-sized portions, yummy chicken Cons: a bit small more

okay... 11/15/2002

I was excited to go to Mama's for the first time, and I did love the portions and liked the food, but I honestly would rather spend an extra couple bucks and have the food made to order (lukewarm fried chicken ends up tasting so/so) and be waited on. It's cheap, but not *that* cheap. It was during the summer, so my friend and I ate outside at the little school desk tables -- fun and kitschy, but a bit awkward. Pros: good home cookin, quirky Cons: self-serve, not made to order more

Not as good as many think 10/26/2002

After reading the ratings from others, I decided to try this place and was really disappointed. Although the price was very reasonable, the pre-made food was hard as rock and it's mostly served cold. This might be a good place if you just want to grab some fast take-out that taste no better than MacDonalds. more

Eh...If You Don't Know Better 10/4/2002

As a NYer with Southern roots, I was really unimpressed by what they had. The food's cold and kinda tasteless and the place is crawling with hipsters looking like they're refugees from the 80s. If want real soul food, go Uptown to Harlem or to Brooklyn or Queens. Like most other things in Manhattan today, it's the fake and watered down version of how stuff should be. more

Great food in a great area 8/26/2002

do you love friend chicken? Do you love Mashed potatos, man and cheese...I can keep going on and on. Bring an empty stomach and a bottle of wine and you are set. more
