Magruders

This store has some of the best prices in the area, usually has good produce and their weekly sales on meat are often the best in the area. It is conveniently located next to a Circuit City, so you can dump the kids and husband, (or wife) and they can ogle big screen TVs for the 30 minutes or so it usually takes to shop. It is a small store, and doesn’t carry every item, but it has almost everything a normal shopper is looking for, and the two self-check out lines speed up your exit. The checkers are usually quick and friendly, and the customer service desk has never refused to give me a refund yet in the three times I have had an issue with a purchase. If you’re frugal and you don’t like wasting time, it’s hard to beat Magruders. more

The Magruder's in Gaithersburg is the place to grocery shop if you want to save money! Their prices are very low, and they double coupons! The negatives: The store is small, and sometimes hard to negotiate a cart through. They also have a smaller produce section than most supermarkets in the area. The checkout staff is not always friendly, but they do get the job done efficiently. The positives: That aside, the selection is good - and the prices can't be beaten. The loss-leaders follow a pretty predictable pattern, allowing you to stock up on every day items every few weeks. The deli meat is very high quality, as is the fresh fish at the fresh fish counter. Their prepared foods are good too. The store label chicken is also very tasty, and has won acclaim. This store even has a wine and beer section! The kosher section is also of good size, as is the fresh section of peppers and chilies. A great value if you don't mind the negatives! more

If I had to pick only one grocery store to shop at, I would most likely pick Magruders because of their prices. While their produce may not be the freshest, they do offer some of the best sales. Along with their weekly specials, the store also offers sales on select items each day, for instance $1/lb on strawberries, or 4 for $1 grapefruit. It usually only lasts for a day or two, but they are usually real bargains. The lines are not usually very long, and they also have self-checkout if you are really impatient. more
