Editorial review from Citysearch 3/19/2013

Thank you DeLand Animal Hospital. I do not have children-my dogs are my children. This is why I have to write this review. Everybody at DeLand Animal Hospital knows how I am about my babies. They know how much I love them and they always put my mind at ease. When I found a lump on Baby's belly, I was terrified. Dr MacPhail sat down with me and offered ALL options - he let US decide what to do. Together, we decided to have the tumor removed and thank goodness we did. The tumor was cancerous but the surgery was a cure. They day of the surgery, I must have called 100 times to check on her. Everybody understood and I received updates. Tonight, I sit here with Baby and Thank ALL of you wonderful people at DeLand Animal Hospital for saving my BABY more

Dear ""invisiblemusecat"", I'm sorry you had a negative experience with the veterinarian you mentioned, but please take care when you are posting reviews for a business that may have a negative impact on their business. You've posted your review 6 times, and in several instances, reviewed businesses where this veterinarian does not work and where your experience did not take place. This is careless at the very least. I hope you will be more careful in the future and perhaps look into removing your reviews from the businesses where it does not apply. more

DeLand Animal Hospital Saved my Dog! 5/16/2012

DeLand Animal Hospital saved my dog. Another vet told me my little Bear had cancer and that there was nothing they could do. I took him home so my family could say Good Bye to him. When Bear started gasping for air that night, I rushed him to DeLand Animal Hospital at 2 am and they immediatley put him on oxygen and IV medication. He stabilzed and when I met with Dr Ulbrich... read more the next morning she informed me that there were chemotherapy options available. We started the chemo and Bear is now in complete remission. My family is so grateful and Bear is acting completely normal. Why didn't the other vet I first went to offer this chemo as an option? Bear is alive and well because of DeLand Animal Hospital. Thank You!!! \r \r more

Vet who should have known! Theresa Harty killed my CAT! 4/21/2012

negligence may not mean malicious however the put come is the same when a pet family dies because of ERROR by a Vet who should know proper protocol for sedations and dosing geriatric cats with medical conditions who WERE NOT DOING TO DIE, had been examed and had procedures done the day before and as I was told NO it is NOT time to put her to sleep she has every chance of a positive outcome with medications she was to start the day this Vet KILLED MY BABY GIRL!..as I say it may not have been intentional but the fact that my cat was by this Vets own admission OVERDOSED with TORB/ACE which she NEVER should have had to begin with especially without asking me how I felt or looking at the cats records.....she could not take torb to begin with and with HCH should never have been given anything like that better to use nothing and wait a day since she had sedation and fluid removed the day before...How would I know I only wanted her to start her new meds and give a quick check up......then on top of it she says she needs to have fluid drained...I thought she is a Vet certainly she knows how to and would not do any harm....she was so over dosed and drugged she hardly could breath and could not move at all and they put her in her carrier to send her home!!!! she was fine the day before I thought she had been given something very very mild...I ran back in with er and all she could say was she was passing..YES BECAUSE YOU GAVE HER TOO MUCH MEDICATION...still nothing was done..I had to go sit with her in a store room and hold a tube to her nose..no techs no Vet..nothing no moniters....no suctioning of her airway, nothing but noise and banging and loud talking and I had to go get the Vet who proceeded to scare her out of her sleep then she could not rest and started choking on her saliva which I told the vet she was doing as she could not swallow and she coughed and opned her mouth because she could not breath and started to panic thrashing her tongue around to try to clear her own airway and the tech just stood there like an idiot as well as the vet just leaning over saying yep she is passing REALLY??????????? I am no doctor and was afraid to pick her up and being in an emotional state while my cat laid there choking and biting her tongue in 2 while the vet still stood there....my cat was suffering and NO ONE did anything I finally said DO SOMETHING and all she said was it is time to put her to sleep.!!!!! NO NO NO YOU KILLED HER!!!!!!!!!what could I do you had no tech who knew what to do...YOU Theresa did not know what to do.you even said ""it is a good thing you (me) said to wait because it was the meds and she just needed to let them wear off"" YOU said that! ...my cat was NOT IN DANGER OF DYING but you made sure the day she was to have a good chance to get better that she died instead!!!!!!!!!!!!......you should be in jail!!!!!!!! and so should Dr Kelly Long Tomoka Pines Vet , at whos clinic you were filling in as he was on a day off again after he had just gotten back from yet another vacation on my money...and could not even bother to be concerned about his own long term senior patient who was immediately in need of professional care and got none!!!! you both should have your licenses taken and put in jail for what you have done!.....the pledge is First Do No Harm..........ignorance, being tired or over worked, being a fill in, not knowing the patient is NO EXCUSE for making GROSS AND NEGLIENT MISTAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

great local vets 3/11/2011

I usually don't write reviews but I have been so impressed with the care my animals have received from these two DVM I had to write in. We had a medical emergency with our english springer over the holidays and Dr. Tom was amazing and so kind. I am grateful to have such experience in our hometown.\r more

Great Vet 2/25/2011

I just moved into the area recently and was a little nervous about having to find a new vet. After going to Deland Animal Hospital I knew my fears were entirely misplaced. The staff was friendly and professional and Dr. MacPhail was fantastic. My dog took to him right away and I could not be happier.\r more

Most compassionate veterinarians 9/27/2010

I had Lou for over 15 years. He was the best dog I ever had and when it was time to say good-bye DeLand Animal Hospital was there for us. I called the hospital and Lynn the receptionist remebered who we were. She sounded sympathetic and assured me that one of the doctors would call me back to discuss Lou's quality of life. When Dr Ulbrich called me, I spoke with her for almost an hour. She said that the decision to let Lou go would be up to us and she'd be there to support us either way. When she offered to come to our home to euthanize Lou, we felt a sense of peace. We knew it was his time, he couldn't get up any more and had stopped eating. Dr Ulbrich and her technician came to our home the following day.they treated us kindly and the entire process was very peaceful. We thank you for their genuine compassion and patience - we know Lou is grateful too. more

Job Application 7/31/2010

I went in to fill out an application. I've had enough experience in this field to think that I had a pretty good chance of getting the job. Months passed and I heard nothing. Come to find out that they thought I was unprofessional because I came in wearing jeans, tank top, and sandals. Now remember, I ONLY filled out an APPLICATION!!! I didn't know you had to dress up for that. I felt like I was profiled/discriminated against. I would never recommend looking for a job/taking your pet there.\r more

Best Veterinary Hospital 11/10/2009

It's the best veterinary hospital I've ever taken my animals to. They take care of all of our elderly dogs and without them our old lab mix would not be with us. He received extensive chemotherapy and is well and alive now! Dr MacPhail performed an amazing orthopedic surgery on our other dog and because of that he can walk! We are very grateful.. The doctors and staff treat you and your pets like family. We love them! Pros: Knowledgable, Compassionate, Reasonable Rates more

Stay away from Deland Animal Hospital 9/27/2009

Do not take your pets to Deland Animal Hospital they are incompetent and greedy. I took my dog, Cocoa, there for fluid buildup in her throat and she panted nonstop. Dr. Macphail said there was no fluid and he dismissed the panting; he diagnosed her with a simple insect bite and prescribed some medications. \r \r I took Cocoa back three days later after she swelled up more and then he decided it was fluid. He said it was probably a ruptured salivary gland and took a sample of the fluid and sent it off for testing. I asked him if he should take an x-ray and he said it was necessary. \r \r Two days later I took Cocoa back because the fluid was in her neck, chest, legs, and face and was coming out her eyes. Later that day the lab results came back and said it was a ruptured cyst. Dr. Macphail said he would need to surgically remove it and that it would be about $200 - $300 if it was easy to locate or $500 - $600 if it was more evasive. The next day, I brought Cocoa in for surgery and the estimate was $700 - $800. After I said I was leaving and would take her to another vet, the receptionist said the estimate included $200 in optional tests (she said nothing about the estimate including optional services until I said I was leaving and no where on the estimate did it say any tests were optional). The estimate was presented as though it would be $700 - $800 for the whole procedure. Also, no where on the estimate did it say anything about the $200 - $300 if the cyst was easy to locate. Later that morning, I received a call from Dr. Macphail who said the diagnosis was wrong yet again. It seems that after prepping Cocoa for surgery the vet could not locate the cyst so he decided to do an x-ray (remember, I asked him if he should do an x-ray three days before that). The x-ray revealed that Cocoa had a massive tumor in her chest that was pushing on all her internal organs including her trachea and esophagus. So, one week after the initial diagnosis I had to put her to sleep. \r \r So, there you are. The symptoms I gave Dr. Macphail were repeatedly dismissed resulting in Cocoa being misdiagnosed three times and unnecessary and costly tests and medications being prescribed. He also charged for an office visit each time I brought her back and they also tried to charge me an extra $200 for the surgery to remove the cyst that wasn’t even there. I do, however, realize that even if he had done the x-ray in the beginning it still would not have saved Cocoa’s life. However, that doesn’t make up for the feeling of relief I had when I left that first day from the vet being told it was just a simple insect bite only to find out a week later that she had a massive tumor and my only real viable option was to put her to sleep. Pros: No Pros. Cons: Cons - Incompetent more
